I've never been able to get into Delaney. His support for NAMBLA always squicked me.

It's called the Cage. Short story is on Tor:

Cute story. =D Nice rec by Kaa.

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments Ugh. I've never heard of NAMBLA. Yuck.

message 3855: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Thanks Soo :) I do remember seeing the name The Cage up further but my brain just associated it with the original series Star Trek pilot “The Cage” and that was it lol

message 3856: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments I feel this urge to go look up shifter romances now. Though they don't always have baby antics in it as much but it does exist!

Gonna be on my 2019 audio listen list.

but Dhalgren is masterful. I'm still, a year later, trying to figure out what I want to do about my Marion Zimmer Bradley books

Don Dunham I believe "squicked" is Babylonian for "somebody get a rope".

Oh dear, I hadn't known that about Delany. I looked into it because that could be ghastly...

https://shetterly.blogspot.com/2014/0...

Not sure this is the place to discuss that but it sounds like he wasn't at in favor of what some members are discussing, and is talking a lot about his own childhood experiences. Still an uncomfortable association (and read) for sure.

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments Armada - I think this will be my last book for 2018. Probably. =)

Don't go into it thinking that it's going to be Ready Player One because it's not. The two have similar elements but they have a different story voice & core message. I liked it. The story is about not taking things for granted and to be willing to see beyond the surface. It's about sacrifice and doing what's right for those you love. I liked the way it showed relationships between family, friends & lovers. How one event can make a lasting impact on multiple fronts. It can make your stronger, afraid, resentful & longing all at the same time.

Of course all of that is expressed with a ton of action & pop culture references. Some of that was lost on me because I've never been a "quoting" type. I found the book to be very introspective and that was something I did not expect to find in the book. Good stuff.

Eric | 463 comments I finished The Tawny Man Trilogy (3 Book Series) by Robin Hobb The Tawny Man Trilogy and will go on with this saga with Rain Wilds Chronicles by Robin Hobb Rain Wilds Chronicles. So three trilogies down, a quadrilogy and trilogy left in the Elderlings.

Rachel | 1403 comments Re:Incredibles 2: Tacoon fight is the Best!

If I can get 155 pages read today I can finished both The Secret Lives of Owls and Eifelheim and therein finish my TBR challenge for 2018!!

message 3867: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Just finished "Version Control" by Dexter Palmer. Some authors just make great writing look effortless. The story take it's own good time to get where it was going, I think your average adrenaline junkie would find the plot too slow. I loved this adventure it time travel and will be following the Author.

Rod (terez07) I'm currently reading book six of The Expanse series, Babylon's Ashes, and really enjoying it.

message 3869: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Also finished "Thin Air" by Richard Morgan and it was a "bloody-good read" and I do mean bloody... and ruthless. Think "Man on Fire" but augmented and on Mars. Rated "R" for violence, Gore and sexual situations.

Travis Foster (travismfoster) | 1154 comments Just finished Gardens of the Moon, the first book in the Malazan series. It's sprawling and hugely magical, and I loved it. Really looking forward to the upcoming buddy read of the full series.

I started Kings of the Wyld and, after five chapters, put it aside. I've heard such great things and have no doubt they're true, but I'm far, far, far outside of its target audience.

On the other hand,The Mad Ship, the second book of The Liveship Traders trilogy, is right there in my wheelhouse. So good!

Finally, a book that has more fantasy elements than I expected and is one of the freshest takes on a slave narrative I've ever read: The Old Slave. It's a slim, wonderful, brilliant novel, and I think many of you would love it as much as I did.

You're now the second person I know who was disappointed with Kings of the Wyld. That's not promising. What a shame! Excited to dive more into Gardens though!

message 3872: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments I liked Kings of the Wyld. It's a story that's "told" to you vs you experiencing it via the characters. It's another trope packed story that fits in a small niche. It was fun, no brainer fantasy. Good for when you're in the mood for something light.

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I was a couple of books short for both the Popsugar and Around the Year challenges this year (yep 2 for each which is pretty good considering this was my first year back) and I’ve decided that 2019 is going to be more about the Goodreads challenge and reading more SFF. Hubby heads home today and I’ve got two days before my daughter comes home so I am going to spend as much time as I can reading. Or watching Netflix. One of the two.

In other news I get a new puppy on Thursday.

message 3874: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Travis Foster a recommendation: "The First Law trilogy" then "Red Country" by Joe Abercrombie.

Jamesboggie (goodreadscomjamesboggie) | 77 comments I finished by 72nd and final book for the year yesterday: Exo. I have mixed feelings. It was a very young adult novel set in an interesting world. The zhree are among the most interesting aliens I have ever read. I will probably read the sequel in 2019.

message 3881: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments These are the last two books I’ve finished in 2018:

* Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm. I liked it, and it was an interesting story with interesting ideas, but I never got really invested in either the story or the characters. For such a short 250-page book, it sometimes seemed to drag a little, even though it really wasn’t slow-paced in terms of action. My review.

* Fool's Assassin by Robin Hobb. This is the first book in the very last Realms of the Elderlings trilogy. I loved the book and I hated every time I had to put it down. I would not recommend finishing this book without having the second book ready to go. My review.

I’m currently about halfway through the second book in the above trilogy and still really enjoying it.

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I think so :) He's 8 weeks tomorrow. My daughter is getting his brother. We decided we'd like to get siblings. They're pure bred border collies.

message 3884: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments I squeezed in a book I started in the fall and forgot about because it's not on my Audible app. haha

Working for the Devil was a re-read for me. Tried out Graphic Audio and it was cool. It took a while to adjust to the full sound production but I managed. Great story in a future UF/cyberpunk setting and a noir style case. I enjoyed the caper and grinned when the story managed to pull off a cool move or two. Dante is a bi-sexual MC and a necromancer. Yay! Another fun story to wrap up 2018.

Happy New Year! =D

Bwahahah

message 3891: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10430 comments Yeah I could start it, but I'm going to let Allison start all the talky threads, since she's the bard in this team!

message 3892: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Yep the herding instinct is definitely very strong in border collies Don. Our last baby girl was a border collie (we had her for nearly 15 years) and she used to round up the kids when we went to the beach. We lost her nearly 8 years ago. I miss her every day. She was my shadow. We went everywhere together. She hated going in the car but she loved getting to other places so she put up with it. Especially the beach.

I spend a lot of time away from home and usually by myself so I decided it was definitely time to get myself another dog.

message 3893: by Don (new)

Don Dunham I'm happy for you Jacqueline, that "being by yourself" is over.
