Thank you Soo, Killfile looks interesting.

Rose, I totally understand! I wonder if authors think women are impervious to all other harm and have no other fears. I get that discussing trauma is cathartic for some, and we shouldn't erase it, but I sure would like to confine those discussions to authors capable of dealing with it well. Can't we have frostbite or car crashes or something every now and then?

That was one of my issues with Heart-Shaped Box, actually. Every woman in that had had (view spoiler)
I finally read Harry Potter 1-5 during Thanksgiving. IT WAS AMAZING!!!! I was crazy not to read it before now. >0<

ditto beth. I'm seriously hoping someone takes the hint on that for me, because it looks sooooo pretty.
I have the illustrated Earthsea, but I've only looked at it a little so far. The font is teeny tiny. I wouldn't love to read the novels like that! But the art is pretty great, the little I've looked at. Ged looks pretty weird in the endpaper art, but if this is Ursula's vision, then it's Ged. Unless it's only the dragons she made sure were right this time. The dragons sure are cool looking!

So this is going to sound very selfish...
But I have NO IDEA why people don't buy me books! There's so many on my wishlist! I talk about them constantly! I keep making new bookshelves for books!... that I then fill with tea cups (I don't drink tea) and owl figurines (I don't actually believe that owls are a decor style, but apparently I was incorrect) instead of books.
B O O K S!
I hope you get the ones you asked for folks!

The book is huge and pretty. I'll definitely re-read the series next year. Yay for illustrated books!

I keep my (public) wishlist filled with about 30% "reading for pleasure" books, 30% RPG Material, 20% video game material, and 20% board game material. I use a small variety of price points so that no one feels obligated to buy a "big thing."
Still... no one ever buys me the books on there. :(

What's with that!
A great read for people who like their book characters to have special talents! Though you should probably read Vicious first:)My review of Vengeful by V.E. Schwab

I'm glad you liked it. Vicious is high on my priorities on my TBR list.
Pam wrote: "Read The Other by Thomas Tryon and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...."Love that book!
Allison wrote: Stories of Your Life and Others had a lot of great ideas. Ted Chiang thinks big thoughts and explores them with a fine-tooth comb."A great description of his writing. He's one of my top five favorite authors -- I just wish he'd do more of it.

Read Fred the Vampire Accountant and a fair slab of The Cloud Roads on the plane last night. Didn’t sleep a wink from Rome to Hong Kong. Which sucks because I’m currently at HK Disneyland absolutely exhausted.
My audible credit for next month came in and with it the suggestion of The Way of Kings. Amazon itself didn't give me the audible option for this novel (strange ... I thought they belong together), so I was about to go for the Name of the wind. But this is better - 45 hours ... December audio is saved (and my husband will like this, cause I'm doing the washing voluntarily since I can listen to audiobooks)
Soo wrote: "OOo I'd be okay with Secret Santa! Maybe ebooks within a certain price range?"I'd be cool with a SS.
The way we did it in another group I'm in is the person would give a list of 5 books they want for the SS to choose from. Cuts down on the guessing and whatnot...
Currently reading Kill the Queen and Killing Commendatore. Apparently I've got an unintentional kill theme going on.Kill the Queen is pretty predictable fantasy so far. The first part is titled "The Royal Massacre", so guess what happens? It makes all the something-is-up hints dropped in the first part feel pretty stupid. Waiting to see where it goes now that I'm on to part two. One of the characters just made fun of the princess in training to get revenge trope though so I'm hoping the author is aware and is going to go somewhere interesting with it.
Killing Commendatore is pretty typical Murakami so far. So, basically good and intriguing with some pretty awkward moments with women. I've seen it talked about as an homage to The Great Gatsby, so I'm curious about that.
Dawn wrote: "Yeah I looked at Nightrunner the other day and it totally looks like something I’d enjoy too so it’s on my to-read pile XD"Depending on the schedule, I'd be up for a BR of the first one of these. It's been languishing on my dead-tree shelf for quite a while.
Soo wrote: "I tried Dawn and I called it quits at 45%. If there's an anime of the story, I'd be all over it but the book came off as a fairly dry recitation vs a story unfolding. If I get back to working on my Japanese, I'd rather give the original a try vs reading the translation. "Hi Soo, there is absolutely an anime of LoGH. If you have $800 US to spare, you can get the whole thing. These were made-for-video productions (aka OAVs) and movies from the '80s and '90s. Some of it was remastered in the meantime iirc: https://shop.sentaifilmworks.com/prod...
A remake has also been airing this year and is available on Crunchyroll.
Ha! I actually know the anime. That explains why the title was familiar. =) Thanks for the heads up, Beth.
I started Fuzzy Nation because I needed something light after a monstrous November reading project. I've been told a million times how cute the fuzzies are, but I wasn't expecting them so be so fricking adorable! <3 This is probably going to have to be my favorite Scalzi.

Pretty sure this is what George Lucas was going for with the Ewoks.

Related: I just finished Scalzi’s The Consuming Fire, the second Interdependency book. Fast and fun with a satisfying ending that leaves plenty of room to continue.
I need to decide between Swan Song by Robert McCammon or The Traitor by Seth Dickenson. Reading both at the same time which never really works for me. Enjoying them both.
Today I finished Ahsoka by E.K. Johnston
My Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
A quick easy read which was a lot of fun. There are deeper Star Wars books out there but this was a great little read to learn more about Ahsoka.
Earlier this week I read the follow-up to Vicious. Vengeful by V.E. Schwab
My Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I love these books. Fingers crossed we see more of V.E. Schwab's superheroes! 5 stars.

I really enjoyed Ahsoka. I'm finding that Claudia Gray is a great author. She manages to pack a lot into a YA Star Wars novel. It's not all fluff! I also really liked Lost Stars and I'm looking forward to reading Leia: Princess of Alderaan
At the moment I'm enjoying my two reads immensely. For the eyes I read Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr, which is different and quite enchanting. And for the ears I have The Way of Kings, which positively surprises me with the complexity of the story and the masterfully written characters. (is there a thread for this, btw? I didn't find one)
Anna wrote: "Stormlight (Way of Kings): https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/..."Thank you so much, Anna! I will necropost immediately
I've recently started the Aurora Teagarden mysteries by Charlaine Harris. Lightweight mysteries that are enjoyable to listen to. I'm 1/2 way through book 2 A Bone to PickI've also been reading the All Soul's Trilogy and currently am on Shadow of Night. Why did I wait so long to read this series?!
My bedtime read is Shadow Spell, book 2 in the O'Dwyer trilogy.
And, finally, my "because work is sooooo slow" read is a beautifully illustrated version of The Tales of Beedle the Bard. The way it's going today, I'll have it finished by the end of the day.
King of the Road #2 comes out in a few days! Yay! Listening to The Brotherhood of the Wheel again and plan to stay away from cranky-reading grumps by reading books that I enjoy.
If I read too many blah to bad stories in a row, I get grumpy and dive into shred the story mode. Which seems to be a terrible idea because that just makes the experience worse but it happens. I wrote 'John Smith is pretty great' but that's misleading because he's a shadowy character. I still like him though! Killfile was good but Flashmob was awesome.
Just finished Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five and will probably keep thinking about this for a while. I absolutely understand why it is seen as a modern classic.
