Becky | 64 comments Hello! My name is Becky and I'm from Minnesota. I have been on the site for a little while but just used it for logging the books that I have read and want to read. I decided to join a group that would help me with my goal and that would give me good books to read. I am open to reading any type of book but my favorite is historical fiction. I cannot wait to get started on a few challenges in the new year!

message 356: by Samyuktha (new)

Samyuktha Sundar Hi, I'm Sam, from North Carolina! I couldn't complete my reading challenge for 2017 and I'm hoping I'll get some motivation here! This group seems to have a lot of very interesting content but to be very honest, I'm a little intimidated right now! :) Hopefully I'll be able to understand how everything works soon! But I'm excited nevertheless!

I love reading fiction and fantasies. I am right now very interested in historic fiction and I'm also trying some dystopian novels. I'm still cultivating my appetite for non-fiction and that's one of my reading goals for 2018 - read at least 10 non-fiction books (fully).

I'm still figuring out a number for my net year's reading challenge though. I'm going to look at some of the challenges here and hopefully that'll motivate me more!

Hi Becky, welcome to the group! I think you have come to the right place; this group has really helped me to read more and by joining some of the group and buddy reads, I read some books I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. I hope you’ll have the same experience. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask!

Hi Sam, welcome to the group! If you’re looking for help, encouragement and motivation to reach your goal, you have come to the right place. At least that has been my experience this past year. It takes some time to look around, get familiar with all the threads, but I promise you, it is not complicated, eventually you’ll get the hang of it :) Wishing you lots of fun! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Michelle Hi everyone!! My name is Michelle and I’m from Wisconsin. I love to read mystery/thriller books. I also enjoy fiction and romance. I’ve been a member of goodreads for a while, but have never really utilized it. 2017 was the first year I set a reading goal. I did 15 books as my goal and so far I’ve read 21 books this year. For 2018 my goal would be to read 25 books. I’m excited to be part of a group and see what group challenges are like!!

Hi Michelle, welcome to the group! I think you’ll like being part of a group, I know I’ve enjoyed it very much myself this past year! There are some amazing challenges, just have a look and see which ones sound like fun to you. I’m also a big fan of the monthly group and buddy reads; I’ve read way more than I had planned because of them and I’ve read books I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. Hope you’ll have fun participating!

Helene (gande) | 10 comments Hello :)

My name is Helene, I am 28 and from Denmark. I currently study to become a teacher in danish, english and history and due to a lot of focus on those areas I haven't read as much as I would have liked to. But these are however great areas to find books and I would therefore love to come out of my shell where I usually read fantasy (I would still read fantasy, but also add something more to that)

I really wanted a bookclub in my wish to find new bookrecommendations and also to keep me on point while I go for 6 books this year (one every second month might be the maximum I can achieve until I am done with my studies in 18 months).

I can't wait to get started :D

Hi Helene, welcome to the group! If you need some encouragement to reach your goal and also if you're looking for some ideas on what to read, you have come to the right place! By seeing what others have read and how they liked it, my TBR list has grown exponentially! Also, joining some of the group and buddy reads led me to read more and to read books I probably wouldn't have otherwise. I hope you'll enjoy the group as much as I have this past year. message 370: by Lara (new)

Lara (lemh) | 186 comments Hello all!

My name is Lara and I'm currently living in Honolulu, Hawaii. I've moved around a lot though, so where I'm "from" would probably be Virginia.

I'm a children's librarian, so the bulk of my reading right now is "work reading" - picture books and mid-grade, both of which I enjoy. For personal reading, it's a little bit of everything. I try to include some non-fiction and literary pieces, but go-to genres are fantasy, mystery, and romance, especially if any of those have a historical twist. I love manga and graphic novels, and listen to a good number of audiobooks too. Like I said, a bit of everything!

I joined Goodreads a couple years ago, but have been using it more and more recently because of work - writing reviews, making notes, etc. Looking to get further into the site, I started browsing groups. This one looked interesting and active, as well as lining up with one of my own personal goals (Read More!). The shorter-term challenges and the buddy reads look like a great way to keep me working on my goals.

I started my year in 2017 aiming to read 52. I ended up reading waaaay more than that, with all the reading I do for work. Not a bad thing, right? I'm aiming for at least 100 again this year, but I think my reading goal in 2018 is less about the numbers and more about reading more variety, getting me outside my usual ruts.

When I'm not reading, I enjoy hiking, swimming, running, knitting, watching movies, travel, and playing with my cat.

I love, love, LOVE Fantasy, Romance, Action, Adventure, and Historical! Most, but I will give a go to most genres,... though maybe not contemporary.
I found this group, from someone liking the post.
My goal for 2018 is gonna be 110... though I might start with 50 so it doesn't seem as scary!

7 and 8 years old it is a struggle to get into serious reading. My aim is to read 20-25 books this year. Would be happy if I could read around 30 pages a day.

I enjoy reading horror, crime novels.

Sounds diverse indeed. I love manga but watching series on tv. For books I’m really into fantasy and mystery too, next to thrillers and horror. But like you, I’ll read about any genre if it sounds interesting enough.

I joined Goodreads a couple years ago, but have been using it more and more recently because of work - writing reviews, making notes, etc. Looking to get further into the site, I started browsing groups. I hear that a lot, people being a member of GR for some time before joining a group. I had been a GR member for nearly 5 years before joining this group. And I am SO glad that I did. I started out with a modest goal of 12 books and am reading my 46th book of this year now. All thx to the challenges and especially the group and buddy reads this group has to offer.

I started my year in 2017 aiming to read 52. I ended up reading waaaay more than that, with all the reading I do for work. Not a bad thing, right? Not bad at all!!!

Love to travel as well. And as for watching movies: I have an unlimited pass which allows me to go to the movies as often as I want (went to see Murder on the Orient Express and Breathe today). 😻 Love cats 😄

Hope you’ll enjoy this group as much as I have this past year. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask!

Welcome to the group Dimitris!
Even for people without kids it can be a struggle sometimes. I’m extremely busy at work so have very limited time to read during the week. Besides, when I get home I’m so tired I’ll just fall asleep before even finishing the page.

Mia (morvorenmia) | 3 comments Hi everyone,
Im Mia, from Towcester in England. I like so many genres but at the moment seem stuck on Thriller/Fiction ( book by B A paris, C L Taylor etc) I get quite alot of my books as ARCs through netgalley so I will read pretty much anything and am guilty of judging a book by its cover on a regular basis!
I found this group as i was hunting for a local book group - ( and failed on that count)
This years target was 35 Books which I beat by some margin, So im upping to 50, but with a full and part time job, plus a diploma to study for I might have to choose some shorter books this year to read!

Welcome to the group Mia!
I stumbled upon this group in the same way. Was looking for a local book group, found one, but it wasn't active anymore. So that's when I decided to try this one out and haven't regretted it!! Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I have this past year!!

Alexa Hi, my name is Lex and i’m from Evansville, Indiana. I’m new to using GR and happened to stumble upon you wonderful people!

I fell back in love with reading in 2017, and I love, love my e-reader more than any other device I have. I was stubborn to the change, but it turned out to change my reading habits for the better. My genres of choice vary at times, but I tend to stick to suspense/thrillers.

My reading goal for 2018 is 50 books.

Kait | sixcrowsbooks (sixcrowsbooks) Hi, everyone! My name is Kaitlyn, but I'm fine with being called that or Kait. I live in Michigan, going between the east side of the state and Kalamazoo due to being a college student. If anyone was wondering, I am double majoring in Psychology and Gender and Women's Studies and minoring in Sociology.

I mostly enjoy YA fantasy and contemporary, with plenty of diverse characters. My favorite series this year was "The Young Elites" trilogy by Marie Lu. However, I also like quite a bit of non-fiction and adult fiction, particularly horror and thriller.

My reading goal this year was 15 books, since I started in the middle of the year, and I actually surpassed that with 18 books and counting! In 2018, I'm hoping to finish 20 books, and maybe more, if I can. One of my new year's revolutions is to set aside at least 30 minutes every day to read recreationally, so hopefully I can meet my goal.

Nice to meet everyone, and good luck if you are doing any challenges!!

message 389: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello! My name is Samantha--never Sam please!

I currently live in Gainesville, Florida (USA) because I'm getting my PhD in English from the University of Florida. Go Gators! (except I don't really care about football, so.... w/e lol)

I read a little bit of everything. My academic focus is fantasy literature, but my job requires me to read basically everything. I'm trying to get more into reading history books. Not historical fiction, non-fiction books about history. I don't like dry boring stuff and I like unusual history. If anyone has any recs that'd be awesome! I've already put the Salt: A World History so other books in that sort of motif would be awesome!

My reading goal is two books/week--104 books! I made this year (or am about to, almost done with the 104th book!). What I really want to do is become more methodical about my reading because I tend to forget what I've read, what I thought about a book. This is partially to help me catalog and organize and also leave myself a record of what I've read so it is easier for me to come back and study or use in my classroom. So I'm trying to write book reviews.

I also want to build a stronger community of other book loving people--not just academics. So I want to fill up my goodreads feed with other bibliophiles!!

Vanathi Santhuru (lifeaftersavannah) | 4 comments Hi I’m Vanathi from Toronto, Canada. I’m hoping to get some great book suggestions from this group to help me meet my reading challenge of 18 books for 2018. My favourite genre of books is historical fiction- especially those set in France. I also enjoy chick-lit for a lighter read and am a fan of the Harry Potter series. I’m part of a bookclub and we’ve gotten into a habit of reading books that are made into movies (either we knew or didn’t) and thought that by joining a group, I could get some suggestions for different books. I look forward to 2018 and all the books I hope to read!

Seen from the point of a danish - soon to be - english teacher, this should actually be a way better way to learn english rather than just in school. This forum provides a great way of second language acquisition and would add to your vocabulary in a spontaneous and authentic way, giving you higher chances of keeping the language even if it would end up somewhat unused.

With that said, it is already at a great point :) We can all understand it and that is the most important part of communication :D

I read a lot of Stephen King when I was in high school, then got bored and started reading other stuff. Started this year again with Cell and Under the Dome. I think 2018 is fully booked for me lol, but in 2019 I plan to pick up reading his books again. Want to start over with The Dark Tower series, and finish it this time of course (amongst others).

Hope you'll get a lot of great ideas for books to read. I get a lot of ideas from the group and the buddy reads and also from reading other people's (short) reviews/ratings that they post when updating their challenge. Not everybody does that, but enough people do for my TBR to have grown exponentially!!!

Shilpa | 1 comments Hello everyone, I'm Shilpa and am from Chennai, India.
I love reading books it's like an obsession I can't seem to stop
I especially love reading about Historical romance, romance, thrillers, mystery, second-chance genres.
It all comes down to love I know.

Lisa Kleypas and Julie Garwood are few of my favourite authors. If someone do have a similar taste please ping me. I would love to have a person to gush around with! :P

I would like to read 150 books in 2018.
Fingers crossed!
