Kelsey (urbanleaves) | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Kelsey. I just started using my GR account for the first time since grad school, and thought the reading challenge would be a great chance to get back into it! I normally read fiction, but my book club has been pushing me to read more nonfiction which is sometimes rewarding (and sometimes not). My favorite book this year was The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne. Nice to meet you all!

I'm with you there Kelsey - I'm definitely a fiction kinda girl! In my personal experience the non-fiction books that you read either have to be superbly written or on a topics that you are really into. Wish you the best of luck with your challenge :-)

Jen Griffin | 2 comments Hello! I'm Jen and I'm from Western Mass. I have loved reading for as long as I can remember - my favorite place when I was young was our local library. I signed up for challenges way back then.

I love many different Genre's - these days I'm reading a lot of YA Fantasy (Falling Kingdoms), but I also like Murder Mystery (The Nightbird), historical fiction, (The Address) and Contemporary (Little Fires Everywhere).

I was in this group last year - I love to see what everyone is reading - what are the most talked about books of the year and of course watching my Read list grow. Last year my goal was 20 books and I surpassed that. This year I went with 30 and I'm almost at 50. While I would like my 28 goal to be 100 books - it is probably not feasible, with a Full time job, a part time job, being a single mom to a 10 year old, I'm not sure I could do it. So I'm going to go with 50-55 books for 2018!
So glad to be here again!!

Hi, Heather, I am glad that you have joined the group. Different from school, participation in all group activities here is voluntarily :) You don't have to you join a groupread if you don't want to or don't have enough time to read the book. That said, it is a lot of fun to discuss great books with other members, and I would encourage you to have a look at the group or buddy reads and just join in whenever you feel like it :)

Happy reading!

Liz (northhearthub) Hello friends!

I'm Liz, and I live in North Dakota, USA. I read anything that has a great story-- so that's usually a lot of YA, fantasy, scifi, comic books, and whatever I get my hands on :)

I'm a library junkie, and Overdrive saves my life!

I just hit my goal for 2017 of 200 books! Next year I hope to blog about each of my books, so I'm setting my goal down to 104.

All the plusses of joining a book club: fellow readers who love to read, great challenges, fun group and buddy reads etc but no pressure at all: if you start earlier/later, finish earlier/later, decide to not read it at all or whatever, it's all ok. My name is Marissa, and I'm from Austin, TX in the USA. I love contemporary African American fiction and dystopian sci-fi, and I have a soft spot for historical fiction. I'm a sucker for the classics, as well.

I found the group because I was searching for a 2018 reading challenge--I just graduated university in May, and I haven't been doing a very good job of reading by my own volition. So I want to change that. I'm aiming to read 30 books this year (I figured it's about a book per week with plenty of wiggle room when life gets a little busy). I'm hoping I can go beyond that goal!

Hi everyone!:) I'm Marija, from Macedonia originally but lived in London for 5 years now. I love reading philosophical and psychological books (The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Kundera is one of my favourite books ever, read it multiple times at different ages..) and I love Kafka as well. I also like reading non-fantasy fiction, suspense, romance, classics. Sometimes self improvement books but I'm quite picky about those. And I like science books, especially about quantum physics and space.
This past year I've been very bad with reading anything outside of uni stuff hence I'll reasonably put 2018 goal to 50 books and aim to reach over that hopefully :)
Actually, I just discovered this website last week when I saw it randomly on a friends laptop and decided to discover more! Looking forward to meet/chat the rest of you:)

Hi Marija, welcome to the group! That was quite a fortune coincidence that your friend had this site open on her laptop! Cause I think you just discovered an awesome group, at least it has been awesome for me this past year. I had been in a reading slump for years and just didn't manage to get back into it. It made me very sad to think I had lost my passion for reading. But then I discovered this group. I started out with a modest goal of 12 and am now reading my 41st book. Thanks to this group, the amazing challenges it has to offer, interesting monthly group and buddy reads (which are my favourite) and awesome group members who are really friendly and encouraging.
Well Marija, I hope you'll have the same experience. Just have a look around and see what interests you. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Raquel | 1 comments Hello Everyone! I'm Raquel from Arizona. I found Goodreads by pure chance when I googled "if you like books by ____ you should read books by _______". I'm glad I found this site, it's great for tracking my books and getting new recommendations.

I like to read mystery, crime, thriller, historical fiction and classics but will take a break from that to read the occasional chick lit. I just discovered a new sub genre called domestic noir that I like a lot as well.

Years ago I used to read a lot, when I was working on a Bachelor's and then Masters degree I stopped and went to audio books but still not too often. Just recently I've put up some bookshelves, opened up some old boxes of my small book collection and I'm excited to stock my shelves.

I love how everyone in this group is from all over the world! I love to travel (pretty much only US for now and Mexico-hablo Español) and reading lets me explore new places!

My goal for 2018 is 75 books.

Hi Raquel, welcome to the group! GR indeed is an amazing site and this group in particular is even more amazing (lol, not biased in any way). Because of some stuff happening in life I got in a reading slump which lasted for YEARS. Joined GR which helped me a bit (went from reading nothing to reading 3 books in 1 year). But then I found this group.... Carefully I set my goal for 2017 at 12 books, hoping, really hoping to reach it. Thanks to the great challenges, awesome group and buddy reads and last but certainly not least the encouragement from group members, I am now reading my 41st book of 2017 :)))

I like to read mystery, crime, thriller, historical fiction and classics but will take a break from that to read the occasional chick lit. I just discovered a new sub genre called domestic noir that I like a lot as well.

I must say, even though I have been reading all my life (except from those reading slump years) I'm not really familiar with all genres, and then you have sub-genres too, very confusing. Of course I know the main ones like horror, thriller, mystery etc, but sometimes I read a book and just don't know how to classify it....

I love how everyone in this group is from all over the world! I love to travel (pretty much only US for now and Mexico-hablo Español) and reading lets me explore new places!

Yes, isn't that great!!!
I love to travel too. A "hobby" that has been on hold too but have picked that up too. Just been to Taiwan, Dubai/Oman at the beginning of the year and in march 2018 I'll be going to Marocco :))
I don't speak spanish, although I do understand it a little bit cause I'm Portuguese.
Are there countries you would love to visit in the future?

My goal for 2018 is 75 books."
Nice goal Raquel! Will you be joining any of the challenges or maybe some group/buddy/twin reads to help you reach your goal?
I hope you'll have a lot of fun participating in this group! If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask!

My new goal in 2018 is reading 100 books in a year. Actually, I did the same thing in 2017, but even though it's the end of the year, I'm still working on the 87th book.

When I joined Goodread, I looked around many groups and this group was fascinating!

Mostly read crime, YA and a few classics but looking to branch out a bit in 2018 and try some other stuff. I am rubbish at recording my reads on here but I am going to try and keep a better record in 2018. I love to read fantasy books (with the odd non-fiction thrown in here and there). Brandon Sanderson is my all-time favourite author.

I found the group when trying to figure out what book to read from my extensive 'to read' list next. It seems that everyone else struggles as much as I do!

My reading goal is 52 books, one for each week! I only made it to 40 this year because I read some pretty large ones, will have to add some smaller volumes to the list this year :) I can't wait!!

Sean | 42 comments Hello all,

My name is Sean, from Bristol in the UK. I've just joined goodreads (to find some recommendations for Christmas presents) but saw this group and thought I'd stick my head in. I've tried reading a hundred books a year for the last few years and not got past about seventy, but I plan to give it another go in 2018.

I tend to read a bit of a mix, though with a pronouced bias toward science fiction. The last one was "Why Mummy Drinks" by Gill Sims, which any parent should get a kick out of.

cheers

Welcome Sean, glad you decided to check out this group! From my own experience this past year I must say it is an awesome group. It has many great challenges, fun and interesting group and buddy reads and the group members are very enthusiastic and encouraging. So after a reading slump of many years I'm back to reading, finally, so happy about that! Although I can't imagine reading as much as you do, this group has helped me read 43 books where I hoped to read 12 (after hardly having read at all the 5 years before that, or maybe even longer). So I hope you'll enjoy the group and everything it has to offer as much as I have this past year!

ps: did you succeed in finding ideas for your Christmas presents?

message 300: by Sue (new)

Sue (mrskipling) Hello I"m Sue and I live in the UK, on the south coast. This month I've added all the books I own, but have not yet read, to GR and was quite horrified to find that I have nearly 200! So I thought it might be a helpful idea to join a challenge to get that number down a little.

I like classic murder mysteries - Agatha Christie being a favourite of mine, and enjoy spy thrillers, but nothing with blood and gore. Any of the following would have me making a beeline for the exit at the book shop!
- gritty realism
- dark
- haunting
- dystopian

So it's solving the puzzle that appeals to me, and working out the solution before the end of the book.

I also read a lot of non-fiction, particularly about physical and mental health and wellbeing. Mostly because I am aiming to keep the little grey cells in good order as I "mature".

My challenge will be to get my TBR down, but I don't intend to stop buying books in 2018! I just want to read a few more than I buy each month, and the total will gradually shrink. I have read 22 books so far in December, and only bought two, so that's a good start. (I'm not counting Xmas presents mind you. I mean, it's not my fault if people give me books is it? It's not like I had them on a public wish list or anything silly like that.....ahem!)
