TriciaDea_Reads (l_and_c_mom) | 56 comments Hey... my name is Tricia. I live near Atlanta, GA in the good ol' US of A. I am a married mom of two (17 years of marriage with an 11 and 15 year old).

I have been a romance/chick lit reader for pretty much all of my life, but I've been trying to branch out and read other genres, as well. I have no idea how I found this group. I think I saw something on my feed... maybe that a friend liked a group or something. I can't remember. I was just clicking around the site.

I haven't really thought about my reading goal for next year. I think I want to aim for 50 books. I'm going to do the A-Z challenge, so that's 26 books right there. I'd like to shoot for one physical book a week, and also listen to an audiobook on my commute to work. I'm in the vehicle for 1.5 to 2.5 hours a day.

Hi Sue, welcome to the group! Bringing that TBR list down is something we all wish. Even more when we have the books sitting there waiting for us. I hope this group and it’s challenges will help you bring your pile down!

Welcome to the group Tricia! Well, it doesn’t really matter how you found us, important part is that you did find us :) I hope you’ll enjoy this group as much as I have this past year. Sue (mrskipling) Hi Tricia - audiobooks are a great way to read aren't they? I listen on my way to work and also at home when I'm doing the housework. The time flies by. I'm listening to Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell at the moment, which I'm enjoying very much.

message 305: by Sue (new)

Sue (mrskipling) Susy, I'm not sure where best to ask this question, but I'd like some advice about making notes on the books I'm currently reading. I tried using the notes field for the book, but it seems to cut off after just a few sentences. I didn't want to use the review field because this is not my final review - it's just notes and quotes as I'm going along, which I'll write up properly later.

Am I missing something? How do other people make their notes? I could do them on my laptop perhaps and then copy them over later...

Hi Sue, I actually hardly ever make notes, so I’m afraid I can’t answer your question.
You can post your question in your own personal challenge, more people tend to read that. Or you can make a thread in Let’s chat. Also you can always post questions in the thread Questions for mods.

I’ll post your question in the thread How to do things on GR.

Eunice | 11 comments Hey, my name is Eunice. I'm from the Philippines. I'm open to most fictional genres, but I find myself leaning more towards fantasy, mystery, and thriller. When I listen to audiobooks though, I usually go with romance because they're easier to process and I'm often doing something else while listening. I found this group on the active groups list as I was going to look through one of my other groups. My reading goal in 2018 is 100 books.

Hi Eunice, welcome to the group! Those are three of my favourite genres too :)
Glad you found the group and I hope that you'll enjoy it as much as I have this past year. Have a look at everything it has to offer: great challenges, fun and interesting group and buddy reads, several chat threads. Just see what interests you. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Hi Amy, welcome to the group! It's good to have you. Must be very exciting your first challenge, I remember when I started, about a year ago :) Are you joining any of the great challenges this group has to offer as well? Or maybe you would like to do some group or buddy reads where you read a book together and discuss it with fellow readers (one of my favourite possibilities in this group).

As to how many books you should go for, that is entirely up to you and depends on a lot of things: your lifestyle, other hobbies you may have, if you work and/or study, how fast you read, etc etc. So if you have a look around you'll see that goals may range from 5 to over 300 books a year.

I hope you'll enjoy the group as much as I have in this past year. Have a look around and see what interests you. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Good luck and a good day to you too! :)

message 314: by Temitope (new)

Temitope | 6 comments Hello, I'm Ilesanmi from Nigeria. It's nice to meet you all.

I used to love science fiction, in fact four years ago I read most (if not all, I don't think it's all) of Isaac Asimov's books. Now I'm more into Mythology (Greek, fictional of course), I recently read the Percy Jackson series, and Jennifer Armentrout's Half Blood series (still not sure that's the title). I also love mystery and thrillers - crime mostly.

my favorite writers are Asimov, Janet Evanovich, Arthur Clarke, this guy who wrote the Firm, the Pelican brief and all those law thrillers etc.

I found this group by accident yesterday (couldn't join on mobile, dunno why) and today I had to spend a couple of minutes trying to find it again.

In 2018, I hope to read at least a hundred books (though I'm a student and sometimes I'm just too wound up to read any book that is not a physics textbook, but I really hope I can achieve that goal)

oh my, that was long. Thanks for reading...

Federica Barufaldi | 79 comments Hello everyone!
I'm Federica and I'm from Italy.
I've loved reading since I was a little girl and I reader almost every genre of literature. I prefer, though, historical and fantasy novels, while I don't really like love stories.
For this year I set a goal of 52 books!
If you have suggestions of good books tell me :)

Hi Ilesanmi, glad to hear you succeeded in finding the group again and joining. I just read my first book on (Norse) mythology and loved it. Want to read more but there are just so MANY books I want to read (and I'm not a fast reader like you lol) so don't know when that will be exactly.
Are you joining any of the challenges this group has to offer? Or maybe some of the group or buddy reads (I'm a real fan of those)? Just have a look around and see what interests you. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Hi Federica, welcome to the group! My favourite series of this year (after having been in a reading slump for years) is The Lunar Chronicles (although I wonder if anything can beat Harry Potter). And I have been introduced into the world of (Norse) mythology which I quite liked and want to continue reading about.
You can also check the buddy reads for next year if you like reading and discussing books together (or you can suggest buddy reads yourself and see if anybody wants to join you).
Wishing you a very happy reading year!

Ashton (geek_aflame) | 49 comments Hi,
I'm Ash and I'm from Australia. I'm twenty four years old and I live in a small coastal town where nothing ever happens. I've spent 2017 getting back into reading again after struggling to read more then a handful of books a year while at university. I had no idea that I'd actually reach my goal of 52 books this year.

I mostly read speculative fiction, my favourite sub-genres are urban fantasy and horror. I also like mystery fiction, true crime and the odd historical novel, though I will read anything that catches my attention regardless of genre. When I'm not reading I'm usually writing, playing video games, watching TV/anime, listening to podcasts or browsing Reddit.

My reading goal for 2018 will be 104 books, an average of two books a week.

At the moment I'm watching Vatican Miracle Examiner and Psycho Pass (Extended Edition) and re-watching Black Butler . Once I've finished those, I'm planning on starting The Ancient Magus' Bride and Restaurant to Another World .

I'm not sure about the challenges yet, as I'm still familiarising myself with the group but I'm currently working a post for the 2018 Personal Challenge topic.

Don’t know the other ones, added them to my TBW list :)

I'm not entirely sure how the extended edition is different from the original as this is the only version I've watched but the episodes are longer then other anime, around 45 mins each.

I'm up to episode 6 of Vatican Miracle Examiner and so far I'd describe it as mystery/psychological horror series with hints of magical realism.

Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji is one of my favourite Anime and manga series. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Victorian era mystery fiction, dark fantasy/comedy or supernatural horror. The manga is definitely better for people who enjoy the mystery element of the series.

They sound awesome!

As to Psycho-pass, those are really longer, maybe less episodes? How many episodes are there per season? So I can compare it.

Ronnie | 54 comments Hello, all! I am Ronnie and I come from a little town in Northern Vermont, but am a college student in Boston.

I mostly like to read fiction (young adult and adult), but I also like historical, thriller, horror, and some science fiction. I am hoping to read about 75 books in 2018.

I found this group simply by browsing the site; I am excited to be a part of it because I love to read, and honestly, have really been missing my old book club.

Looking forward to getting to know some people!

Hoang Tran | 2 comments Hey guys, I'm Hoang. I'm from Vietnam but currently going to college in the US. I was an avid reader when I was a kid but I went thought a huge reading slump in high school. Therefore, I 'm trying to get back to my old habbit. I set a goal of reading 50 books this year but all the engineering courses really got me good. I couldn't finish the challenge and ended up only reading 34 books. However, I determine to change that next year. I'm setting a goal of reading 40 engineering and career oriented , self-help books and 20 fiction books for 2018. Going through 40 technical books in 1 year will definitely be challenging but that's the fun of the challenge right!!^^

I'm Shreya and I am from Mumbai, India. I used to love reading during childhood but dropped the habit because - life! Since 2017 is almost to an end, I have decided to revive my reading goals for 2018. I would like to start slow and set a 24 book goal for 2018.
I have mainly read fiction, thrillers, coming-of-age and philosophical novels so far but I am open to all sorts of genres.

Hoping to challenge myself and meet like-minded people here.

Cheers!

Hi Kim, I'm new to the group too, and I agree with your point about writing reviews. I'm finding it's great way to organise my thoughts about a book, rather than just rushing straight on to the next one. I also find now that I'm looking out for little extracts that I can use to demonstrate anything I'm going to say about the book. One of my goals is to write better reviews, so I'm looking at other people's to see what they include.

message 337: by lfreaton (new)

lfreaton Hi everyone
I am Laura and I am from Colorado USA...I love to read. Enough said. I would like to read 20-25 books this year, just like in 2017. Especially like fiction with exquisite prose and considerate, stimulating content. This month I read: Dark Matter, The Child Finder and Lincoln in the Bardo and am halfway through Home Fire --so pretty broad in terms of their ability to delight and engage. Glad to be here. Merry Christmas....I am up fretfully early to get my son to the airport with plans to go back to bed and then read the day away later. Hoping for a book or two under my tree!

Kristen Greetings Fellow Book Lovers,
My name is Kristen, I am 31 years old, wife to an amazing man and mama to our three boys. We live in the Pacific Northwest; Washington to be exact!
I read a lot but don't we all ;-)
My favorite genres to read are historical fiction, crime & mystery novels as well as non-fiction crime, drama novels and I love a great memoir. I also read a lot of parenting and faith-based books as it's relevant to the phase of life I find myself in.

My reading goals for this year are to actually finish a reading challenge list. I seem to read the number of books but I have not yet finished checking off all the little " a book about...s" ;-) I joined this group to help me stay the course this year!
I am setting my goal at a minimum of 60 books for my goal. I would like to read the 50 on the PopSugar challenge + participate in a couple (or more!) of the quarterly challenges + read the 3 books for my yearly dyslexia reading group that I am in for my son.

I am excited I found this group! Thanks for the welcome!

Kristen

Silvia Sabovíková | 1 comments Hi! My name's Silvia, I'm from Slovakia.
I am a high school student and going to study at university abroad next year.
Since when I was a small child my mom took me to our town library so I developed a pretty strong relationship with books and reading.
I am a Christian and I love love love CS Lewis's works but I don't hesitate to pick up Keller, Chambers and other classic Christian authors too.
I am very interested in science (and that's what I am planning to study), particularly astronomy. I am encouraged by pop-science books, although these are just basics in science.
I'm not really into fiction books but there are some that really catch my eye and impact me (a lot).
Anyway, I am very excited to be in a goodreads group and I am planning to read 50 books in 2018!

have a good day /joyful christmas and happy new year

I work part time at a library and am currently working on my masters in library science so I'm around way too many good books all the time. I'm a huge fan of sci-fi and fantasy as well as history and biography. At least half of my reading right now is graphic novels since I have a review series that I do for those and they're easier to read when I'm brain dead from school. I'm trying to branch out a bit more in my reading tastes though so I was excited to find this group! I think I'm going to try to increase my goal a bit from this year and read 105 books in 2018.
