...I'm debating on whether to make sure a lot of what I read this year has a substantial number of pages - 2017 saw me read a few really short books, so I think I might look at aiming for a certain number of pages for the year too. Although I've not worked that out yet.."

Hi Chrissie, welcome! Happy to hear you'll be participating more actively. I think it's a lot of fun :)
If you decide to set a number of pages to read in 2018 you might be interested in the Let's Turn Pages Challenge!

Helly (thehellyblog) | 2 comments Hello everyone, this is Helly. I am new to Goodreads and I look forward to using it for reaching greater reading goals. I want to hit a century in 2018, and push myself to my limits because I absolutely love books, but the past few years had put on so much of stress on me that I failed to read much of them.

Once again, lovely to join this group!

N (nstoltze) | 3 comments Hello! I'm Niki and I'm from a small Midwest town in Iowa. I am a lifelong reader whose husband would say I have a book obsession. I have been teaching middle school language arts for 18 years, so reading is actually part of my job. One of the best parts of my job is recommending books to my students and then having conversations about those books to hear their perspective. I love to see that spark when they find a book they enjoy. I do read a lot of YA fiction to keep up with what my students are reading, but I love fantasy, dystopian novels, mystery and thrillers. However, I would like to broaden my horizons and break out of my comfort zone with some other types of books. I am pretty much open to anything, but will admit I struggle with historical fiction and non-fiction. I have discovered I love audiobooks as I commute to work each day. At first, I felt like I was cheating, but now I find myself thinking of how many chapters I can get done when I hop in the car. I found this group as I randomly explored the site one day and am glad I have found a place to connect with other readers. My reading challenge for last year was 30 books and I read 35, so this year I'm bumping it up to 40. Always looking for good recommendations and people to add as friends!

Hi Niki, welcome to the group! Glad you have found us!
Have a look around at everything this group has to offer, like a lot
of great challenges and our awesome monthly group and buddy reads. I'm sure you'll find enough to enjoy :)
Looking forward to seeing what you will be reading. And maybe we'll get to do some buddy reads together (one of my favourite features of this group). Have fun!

Lauren | 8 comments Good morning! My name is Lauren. I am from Alabama, USA.
My reading interest are varied; historical novels, Zen Masters, mindfulness, trillers that are not scary (Ninny here! LOL), history, biographies.
My goal for 2018 will be 25 books

message 508: by Eva (new)

Eva Müller (black-cat-aoife) Hi everyone. I'm Eva from Germany, I love fantasy and crime-novels and my tbr-pile very huge :D
I have tried and failed various reading challenges in the past (after the first couple of books I just couldn't find anything that fit the remaining categories) but now I just took part in a fun one that lasted from November 1st till December 31st and it made me pick up quite a lot of stuff from my tbr-pile that I had almost forgotten about so I thought 'Wait! This is actually fun! I should try to find something similar!' and so I went to look for challenges that were more than 'Read X books' but also not too concrete (my failed attempts were usually because too many fields asked for genres I had zero interest in or stuff like 'read a GR choice awards winner' which is unhelpful when I mainly want to clear out my tbr-pile'). Well and I found this group and it looks perfect :D

Hi Eva, welcome to the group! If you're looking for a fun and active group that can help you bring down that everlasting TBR pile, you have come to the right place. There are just so many great challenges to choose from, I'm sure there will be one (or more) to your liking, like:
Clear The Shelves,
The TBR Jar Challenge or
Let's Turn Pages.
You might also like to try our buddy and/or twin reads.
I'm sure this will be the year you bring down that TBR pile of yours! :) Good luck and have fun!

Pia (bookw0rm99) Hey :)
I am Pia and I live in Vienna/Austria (not Australia... no kangaroos here in Austria)
However I am 18 and I really love ya fantasy and contemporaries...
Goodreads recommended this group to me soooo I'm happy to be here :)

message 513: by Cathleen (new)

Cathleen Sarti Hi all,

I am Cathleen from Mainz in Germany - not that far from Pia in Vienna :)
I mostly read fantasy but I also recently discovered "cosy mysteries" as light literature to relax. In addition, I read a lot of history books since I am a historian.

Andy Bronson | 1 comments Hi Everyone, Im Andy. I'm from Minnesota in the USA. I never really got into reading as a kid. It kind of came as a chore. But now I've really been getting into reading more as an adult. I've been reading for a couple months now straight. I'm not sure what my 2018 goal will be yet, but ill set it when the new year starts. I really have been doing the e-book reading and reading on my personal kindle. I've been reading all different kinds of books really. Horror/Scifi, Fiction, books that have turned into popular movies and books on true life events/anything that sparks my interest really. Libby as been a good friend with the local library which is nice that they provide. Im not sure how I exactly found this group.

message 517: by Kat (new)

Kat (socksteacups) | 23 comments Hi!
I'm Kat and I'm from Ottawa, Canada. I love so many genres, but I prefer fiction. I'm trying to expand my horizons and step away from YA. I really like historical fiction and dystopian novels.
I found the group while looking through the challenge section of the GR page.
A few years ago I set myself a goal to read a book a week and blew it out of the water and hit around 75. This year I'm hoping to read more than 100.
I can't wait to get started!

Happy New Years Eve everyone!

I don't have a particular genre. If something catches my eye I'll read it

I found the group when reviewing groups on goodreads

My goal for the year is 150

Happy New Year Everyone!

message 520: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Hegan (dusty_starr) | 16 comments Hello I'm Brianna from US, Florida. I usually like Fantasy or science fiction, but romance would be my favorite. A mix of the three would be even better. Although I am trying to get into other genres. I found this group by searching for other groups after a long hiatus. Believe me, it is good to be back. Since I'm kind of a slow reader and getting back to reading after a bit of a slump, my reading goal is 10. I know it's a little low, but if I aim too high I might stop all together from the stress.

Happy 2018 everyone! I hope to make many new book friends this year, and read many new books! :3

message 521: by Helen (new)

Helen Hello all--Happy New Year!

I'm from sunny Tucson, Arizona, USA -- or at least that's where I've lived for many happy years. :)

I found GoodReads a while ago, but track my reading a bit sporadically. I found the Modern Mrs. Darcy book challenge for 2018, and thought joining this group might be a good way to track my progress. Also, I was hoping to find others who are doing the challenge, and get some ideas for the different categories -- especially the Read in One Day challenge as I'm a pretty slow reader!

I'm hoping to read at least the 12 books in the Challenge, but imagine I'll read more than that. I generally read fiction, but would like to branch out to poetry, essays, history, plays, etc. I tend to bog down with non-fiction; although I want to learn -- it's usually just a bit dry & detailed for me!

Happy reading to all!! :)

Susanne | 18 comments Hi! I'm Susanne and I'm from the US! More specifically, Waco, Texas!

I love to read all kinds of books, including sci-fi or fantasy, historical fiction, mystery, classics, bestsellers, or non-fiction books about marriage or faith or parenting or just about anything.

I found this group by browsing the groups tab, I've never been that active on goodreads and this seems like a good year to change that.

This year my reading goal is 40, about 30-35 of which will be for me, and 5-10 will be short chapter books I'm intending to read aloud to my kids. I can't wait!

Welcome to the group Brianna! I'm sure you'll make a lot of new book friends and read many new books! :)
I'm a slow reader myself and joined this group in 2017 after having been in a reading slump for years. I started with a tentative goal of 12 books, upped it to 24 during the year and ended up reading 46 books. All thanks to this group, some great challenges, fun and interesting group/buddy reads and awesome fellow book lovers who encouraged me and helped me rekindle my love for reading.
It is good to start slow, reading should be relaxing and enjoyable and not bring you stress! Good luck!

Matthew (hitem1st) Hey everyone,

I'm Matthew or Matt either works. I'm am in the South East region of the U.S. I have just started using this site late this year (2017).

I set my goal to 30 but fell 7 short. I was caught in a reading block as I was reading IT. This upcoming year I'm planning yo use the same goal. I usually read sci-fi, horror, and graphic novels. I also enjoy movie novelizations for the fun of comparing book to movie or vice versa.

If there is any Steve Alten fans are they as excited as I am to see the movie adaptation of MEG. Hope to contribute to the group some how. Happy and safe New Year!

I enjoy historical fiction, mysteries, and crime novels mostly. My goal is to branch out a little more this year and read some nonfiction and other genres.

I look forward to discussing books and reading all the other comments!

Happy reading!

Lu Sun (sunlu_electric) | 1 comments Hello, and happy new year everyone. I'm Sun Lu from China (Sun is my surname by the way) and currently studying in Singapore as a Ph.D. candidate.

I am a slow reader of English books due to my very limited vocabulary pool, especially when the books are not much related to my research background. Sometimes I feel reading a 600-page textbook in control engineering with tons of equations easier than a 200-page novel. But I have a long list of fantastic English-native-speaker writers and I really enjoy reading excellent books in their original language instead of a translation version into Chinese.

With all these things being said, let's see whether I can accomplish my 2018 challenge of 16 books, most of which in English and the minority in Chinese and Japanese. If I encounter good Chinese books and Japanese books, I will recommend them to you. And you may want to find an English translation version for them then :)

Limited vocabulary??? It looks like you have less difficulty writing/speaking it than me!
I do find that reading in English is a great way to improve one's English, so I try and read as much as I can in English (although if I were to read in Dutch I'd probably be able to read a lot more books).
