Helen Mary (datamom) Hi Everyone! So glad to find this group. Helen here from Manila, PH. I am a suburban mom and aspiring data scientist. Planning to balance my fiction and non-fiction reading list this year!

message 452: by Katie (new)

Katie (bookshelfblogger) | 3 comments Hi! I'm Katie, and I'm from Kansas. I found this group from a friend, and I am so excited. I like to read fiction; I describe myself as a "moody reader," meaning I like to read depending on my mood! The genres I most gravitate to are mystery, thriller/suspense, historical fiction, and horror. I look forward to talking to you all more about books! I really think this group will help motivate me to reach my reading goals this year.

I'm Sarah, a 15 year old reader with a proclivity for writing as well. I live in Wisconsin, USA, which is about as boring as the USA gets, so you can see why I enjoy reading so much...."

Hi Sarah, welcome to the group! Reading IS fun, even when you live in a city that is not boring lol (I'm from Amsterdam). I've always loved reading, since I was a small child, and since joining this group at the beginning of this year, I managed to get out of my reading slump and pick it back up again. It's an amazing group with great challenges, fun and interesting group and buddy reads and friendly booklovers who are very helpful, motivating and encouraging. I hope you'll like it as much as I did this past year!

ps: you just may be the youngest in the group indeed, but there are A LOT OF members, so can't be sure....

I'm hoping this year I can branch on of my comfort zone and find a love for books in genres I don't ordinarily read. "

Hi Megan, welcome to the group! For me joining the group and buddy reads has been an excellent way of reading outside of my comfort zone. It is fun to read and discuss books together and I read some books I probably wouldn't have otherwise!
Hope you'll have an amazing time participating in this group. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Welcome Helen Mary, it's great to have you! Hope you'll enjoy this group and it's great challenges, fun and interesting group and buddy reads and friendly fellow booklovers.
Seeing that you want to balance your fiction and non-fiction list, you might be interested in the Recommended Nonfiction List Challenge.
Just have a look around to see what interests you and just jump in! If you have any questions, just ask!

Hi Katie, welcome to the group! It sounds like you've come to the right place. We all love to read and talk about books! :)
I joined this group at the beginning of this year, because I was trying to get out of my reading slump, but not succeeding very well. I started out with a tentative goal of 12 books, upped it to 24 during the year and have now read 46 books. So yes, it is very motivating when actively participating in this group, due to it's great challenges, fun and interesting group and buddy reads and awesome fellow booklovers. I hope you'll have the same experience!

Tess | 4 comments Hi Everyone,

My name is Tess, I live in Australia

My fav genres are probably YA Fantasy and True Crime, but I dip my feet in a few others as well.

My goal for 2018 is 300 books, but I'm not sure how I'll go haha
I never seem to get through my to-read lists, mostly because there's always new books I want to read!

Thanks!
Tess

Pia | 2 comments Hey everyone! I'm Pia and I'm from Germany.

I can't really pinpoint my favorite genre but over the last few months I've really enjoyed reading thrillers, classics, fantasy, some YA and a bit of Sci-Fi. Although I'm trying to distance myself a bit more from YA in 2018 and branch out more.

My goal is to make reading part of my daily routine since I had some trouble making time for it in 2016/17.

Really stoked about joining this group and connecting with so many like-minded people.

Hi Pia, welcome to the group! Reading a bit every day was my goal for 2017 and I've found that joining this group with it's great challenges and awesome group and buddy reads really helped me. I hope you'll have the same experience Pia! Good luck!

Annika Lantz (woweeeeee) | 4 comments Hi! I'm Annika, from the USA. I mostly read fantasy and YA contemporaries, but I am willing to expand my book tastes.
I found this group because I really wanted to engage in the goodreads community, and I didn't know where to start. So I clicked on the groups tab and found this one!

My reading goal for 2018 is to read three books a month, however my reading goal for an indefinite amount of time is for every book I buy I must read three. I have a bad habit of buying books and not reading them for a long time. Shame on me.

Dania (frenchiestfry) | 70 comments Hi everyone, my name's Dania. I'm a 21-year-old who's studying in Sydney. I used to read a whole lot more back in high school but things... happened so I started reading again in 2017.

I'm hoping that by joining this group I'll be more motivated to read and will read more than 15 books in 2018! Looking forward to go beyond my comfort zones (Fantasy, Historical Fiction and YA) and read other books that everyone's reading at the same time :)

Also looking forward to make new friends here <3

message 466: by Issy (new)

Issy (issytrulocke) Hey Guys, I'm Issy from the UK.
My first goal is 36 books, but I'm hoping I will surprise myself so if I reach that with time to spare the next goal is 48. This year i read 17 but I really want to take more opportunity to read rather than sitting on my phone or watching TV so it should be doable!
My favorite books are Horrors, YA, Fantasy, Thriller and Historical Fiction, but I'm open to any genre as long its a good read!
Wish me luck!

Hi Issy, welcome to the group!
Cutting down on phone and tv time is one of my goals as well. Already doing better, but now I'm hooked to this site/group so I spend a lot of time on my laptop instead of reading lol
Hope you'll enjoy this group as much as I have this past year; it really helped me get back into reading and by joining the group and buddy reads I read books I probably wouldn't have otherwise.

lfreaton I am Laura from the US
I just picked up the edition of Dorian Gray from library and started reading for the January Challenge....Wilde is exquisite - I am getting audio version on Audible today to listen while I commute (by bike, typically) to work and while I ski, too. I always do that to get through books in a way that allows me to feel completely immersed or to be 'reading' when I am otherwise distracted by driving et al...lol...
Anyone else started reading yet?
I just finished Home Fire by Shamsie (so so) and Lincoln in the Bardo week prior - one of the best I have read, EVER.
Where do I go for the PDG thread?

I have been in a rut the past year or so where I just haven't made time for reading, but I can't wait to dive back in! My favorite genres are mystery and historical fiction, but if it's a good book I'll read almost anything!

My goal for this year is to read at least 3650 pages.

Hi! :) I'm Demelza and I live in London in the UK.

I mostly read fantasy books. Although I found myself reading a lot more non-fiction books and contemporary throughout 2017 too.

I found the group once I realised 225 unread books needs motivation and this kind of group is perfect for that!

My reading goal is 60. I surpassed my 52 book goal this year while a full time MSc student and working, so hopefully I can boost my reading game in 2018. I hope to be binge reading series because a lot of that TBR is the first books of series that need to be loved!!

Good luck with your series. I posted a link in your personal challenge thread to our Serial Reader Challenge. You might like it. And there are other great challenges you might like. Hi Anouska, welcome to the group! Sounds like you have a very busy life. I have a hard time finding enough time to read with my busy job but I don't have children, so I can imagine it must be even harder for you.
I did find however that I managed to read more since joining this group. The challenges are great, I love the monthly group and buddy reads and the people are very encouraging, so that has helped me a lot. I hope you'll have the same experience! Have fun!

I like to read paranormal romances, mysteries, and anything that holds my interest in the first chapter. I am always up for trying new authors and new books. I am going to try to get to 105 books this year. I have never tracked how much I read before so I am hoping I can get close to this number.

Grga (grgajo) Hi everyone, I'm Grga from Croatia.
I joined this site a couple of years ago, I think it was in 2013 but recently I started reading and updating my progress.

Managed to read 10 books since September. I really hated reading in high school so its a start :D
I am hoping to read 30+ books in 2018, reading is really an awesome hobby :)

Because I am a book noob I started with the well known books (Harry Potter) so if anyone has some recommendations feel free to message me or reply here. I like fiction, horror, mystery, paranormal and anything that is fun to read :)

Good luck with your challenges and happy reading :D

message 493: by Hillary (last edited Jan 10, 2018 06:29PM) (new)

Hillary | 15 comments Hi, my name is Hillary and I am from the Pacific Northwest of the United States. I have been a member of Goodreads for about 5 years now. For 13 years I worked at the biggest Barnes and Noble store west of the Mississippi (that was what what I was told during my training back in 2000). It was the second biggest bookstore on the West Coast (California through Washington State). Since I left the job at the bookstore, I have volunteered at libraries and nonprofit online bookstores.

About ten years ago I started reading books about the Tudor Period of England, fiction and nonfiction. I became obsessed. The authors I usually read are Philippa Gragory, Alison Weir, Jean Plaidy, Antonia Fraser, Hilary Mantel and Margaret George. Recently I started on a historical fiction series about the 6 wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir. I read the first book about Katherine of Aragon. I think the first three books are out in paperback.

A couple of years ago, I started reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I avoided it for awhile because I knew from the job at the bookstore that it was usually shelved in the ROMANCE SECTION and I wasn't into romance. Finally, I started reading it to coincide with my trip to Great Britain in 2015. Now I am on the fourth or fifth book. The Fiery Cross, I think? I get them confused. The storyline no longer takes place in Great Britain or Scotland. The Outlander's protagonist is from Britain and her husband is from Scotland.

My favorite authors are Margaret Atwood, Isabelle Allende, and Wally Lamb.

My list of what I don't read is a lot shorter than what I will read. I don't like romance unless it is historical romance. I don't like self-help books. I prefer historical fiction or plain nonfiction over historical figures or famous time periods (like the War of the Roses or the Battle of Culloden, for instance.)

I am excited to be part of the group!!

My reading goals for this year are: read at least 80 books and to take part in two prompt type reading challenges (which should cover a good portion of my 80 books for the year!). I'm debating on whether to make sure a lot of what I read this year has a substantial number of pages - 2017 saw me read a few really short books, so I think I might look at aiming for a certain number of pages for the year too. Although I've not worked that out yet.
