Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1413 comments I finished The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. It's the craziest and most bizarre fantasy novel I've read. And I loved it!

PattyMacDotComma Maybe I should have listened to the Tom Hanks audio of The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, which has had some rave reviews.
The Dutch House by Ann Patchett 3.5★ Link to my "Dutch House" review

PattyMacDotComma Address Unknown by Kathrine Kressmann Taylor is a terrific story, first published in the US in 1938, as Hitler was promising to restore German prosperity. It had an amazing impact then, and it's no less amazing now. READ IT!

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1413 comments I don't usually read graphic novels, but My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Vol. 1 by Emil Ferris was recommended to me. Told in the voice of a 10-year old girl, set in 1960s Chicago, has a murder mystery, a holocaust survivor, and a whole host of other interesting characters. The story was good. The illustrations, breathtaking.

Finished yesterday The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara.
I didn't expect this to be as good , as great, as A Little Life, and this isn't.
It lacks the span, the thoroughness, the vision of a life, of a group of people, of a time.
Stil this is a really good book, the description of Perina's mind is outstanding. Till the very last page, where all is terribly confirmed.
If ony she'd have cut some parts of the descriptions of the islanders...

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1413 comments Finished Green Lion by Henrietta Rose-Innes.
I thought it was very good, but I preferred her Nineveh. Her books embody a message about the relationship between humans and insects/animals.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino over the weekend. I liked it a lot though I don't really understand why it is considered a fantasy. The plot is fantastic (a man who lives his life in the trees, never touching the ground) but it isn't what I would consider "fantasy". The baron, Cosimo, is eccentric just as, say, Miss Havisham is eccentric but there is nothing magical or supernatural about him.

A Little Life would be a hard act to follow, I reckon. Maybe I'll give this other one a miss.

PattyMacDotComma It's hardly the Definitive Dylan, but this book for kids, Bob Dylan, by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara is a good introduction to a unique singer-songwriter and the first musician to win the Nobel Prize for music.
Bob Dylan by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara 4★ Link to my link review with a bit of the artwork

PattyMacDotComma I love Maggie O'Farrell's books, but this one, about herself, is something else again! I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death is 17 stories from her life, which could have been a lot shorter at least 17 times!

In Italy it is NOT considered a fantasy!!!!! It is part of a trilogy, of our ancestors, all on very particular characters: The Cloven Viscount and The Nonexistent Knight.
Of course they are all about contemporary Italy, contemporary to the time they were written, the beginning of the '60s of last century!

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1413 comments Finished The Medusa Reader edited by Marjorie Garber and Nancy J. Vickers.
It's a comprehensive anthology of excerpts referring to the figure of Medusa and her myth. It begins with Homer and goes all the way to Gianni Versace's adoption of her face for his logo. I recommend the book if you're interested in Medusa.
