Important question. Hopefully I can do it justice.

Writing requires time and hence - job, kids, family, social obligations - all become challenges to a writer. What is to be done?

Make your writing an inviolable priority. Turn off or GET RID OF your television. Although children are always priorities, consider scaling back your non-familial social commitments, memberships to clubs, shopping, etc., and be intentional about gifting your time to those who matter most. When guilt surges. (and it will) remind yourself that when you have succeeded in publishing your excellent work, your friends and family will be proud of you.

Remind yourself daily that passion is the great force that creates star systems and forests and your passion is no different. Be the first to consider your writing precious and others will either adopt your conviction or make themselves blessedly less present within the sphere of your life.

Greetings!

Keep your expectations low and you will be OK with my blog.

This is my first post and since they're not offering any way for me to post doodles, I'll try to 'use my words and not my fists' as the preschool teachers often say, but I'm a Chicagoan heart-and-soul, so things might get profane and a bit wild.

Thank you, BTW, for reading that doorstop I wrote. I will always be grateful that you did, wha Read more of this blog post »

“Never let anyone's darkness provoke you into your own midnight.”
Emil Ferris, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Vol. 1

“Like I said, basements usually smell like surrealism. But kitchens and gardens almost always smell like impressionism.

Because our kitchen is part of a basement apartment, it smells like the early impressionism of Vincent Van Gogh - all big strokes of umber and ochre - a peppery greasy I-love-you smell.”
Emil Ferris, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Vol. 1

“Sometimes a thing happens that's so bad that it feels like things should be made to look on the outside, the way they feel on the inside.”
Emil Ferris, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Vol. 1
