What Are You Reading? - 2017.1
I finished listening to Brave New World which I really enjoyed. The narrator really made it. Now I can move back to the other audio I was listening to, Bad Science. I have been listening to this off and on for months and have had to renew it a number of times. I want to finish it this year. Actually, I have a couple books I'm "reading" that I want to finish before the end of the year including The Vagrant and The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed by True Stories of Trauma, Madness, and Recovery. I need to set myself a little challenge I think.

Just started Let the Right One In for the annual challenge. It's appropriate to halloween anyway. I tend to struggle a bit with translations, I think it is an audio thing, so I'm not sure how it will go.
I finished A Death in Vienna for my leftover stew challenge (formerly Geocache challenge). It's set in Austria.Next up is The Wheel of Darkness, unless I change my mind and read something Halloweenie.
I finally finished reading The Warded Man for the group read. I am still working through I, Claudius: from the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius. I am currently listening to All These Worlds, but almost done.I have six other books on my nightstand to finish up my Yearly Challenge. Is It Just Me?: Or is it nuts out there?, Me: Stories of My Life, Easter Island, Deafening, Tenth of December and Shower of Gold.
I finished Katherine which I absolutely loved! Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Next up for me is The Gustav Sonata for the Grocery Wars challenge.
I have been trying, and failing, to get into The Gustav Sonata so I have decided to put it back on my TBR pile for now. I have decided to read The Silent Companions instead as I'm in the mood for a creepy, Halloween-type read.
Lisa wrote: "I have been trying, and failing, to get into The Gustav Sonata so I have decided to put it back on my TBR pile for now. I have decided to read The Silent Companions ..."That sounds good and I love the intricate cover art. Added.

Janice wrote: "I have Silent Companions on my wishlist. I'll be interested in your response to it."I will make sure I write a review once I have finished. The first few chapters have been excellent.
Margo wrote: "Lisa wrote: "I have been trying, and failing, to get into The Gustav Sonata so I have decided to put it back on my TBR pile for now. I finally finished Sleeping Beauties and I'm afraid I couldn't give it any higher than 2 stars. I feel so bad that I gave my favourite author 2 stars. I'll start Station Eleven on audiobook tomorrow.
I'll be curious what you think of Station Eleven Janice. I think we did a buddy read for it when it first came out so definitely check in on the thread.
Name of the Wind and Painted Man are both awesome books. I don't think I could read them both at the same time though. Not necessarily because I'd get confused but because they are both amazing reads. I would want to enjoy them separately I think.
I've started reading them at the same time, but I got confused, because I still was reading 'A shadow of what was lost'. That one I've finished and I putted aside 'The name of the wind', until I've finished 'The painted man'.
Sarah wrote: "I'll be curious what you think of Station Eleven Janice. I think we did a buddy read for it when it first came out so definitely check in on the thread."I recall the buddy read and wishing I had joined in. I'll be sure to find it and read all the spoilers.
I am currently reading The Birds and Other Stories. There are 6 short stories in total and I've read the first, The Birds and currently reading the second, Monte Verita.
I absolutely loved The Birds - creepy is the only way to describe it. I now need to watch the Alfred Hitchcock movie.
Not quite sure about the second but we shall see.

OMG - you are so right!! After finishing the book, every time I saw any type of bird, whether by itself or in a flock, I felt very uncomfortable. It was the Magpies on my front lawn that made me shiver!

Travis sivarT wrote: "You'll never see seagulls the same after they peck half the town to death"I had a nasty encounter with some very aggressive seaguls. Not nice birds :(

I finished
and it is my favorite book for 2017 so far. Definitely a 5 star read and I was NOT able to figure out the murderer!

I finished The Rembrandt Affair last night. It ends with the reader thinking Gabriel Allon is done as a spy. The quiet life, restoring paintings, maybe creating some of his own. But since this is #10 of 17, we know he's going to be sucked back in. Poor thing. I'm putting a hold request on the next installment.I'm moving on to 16th Seduction. That'll put me up to date with the series (#17 comes out officially in February). I marked it as completed a while ago when I finished #14, but of course it kept going. I think the only way an author can really be done with a series, is by killing off the character. That would be hard. So they just keep going, I guess, until they end up in senior living. But then there would probably be a whole new series of flashbacks and "remember the times". Can ya see it? Our favorite macho series characters, old and wrinkled, lost to Alzheimer's but still able to remember the good old days and an author who won't stop? Awful!
I am currently reading 118 essays on Why People Settled West? It's a grading frenzy for the end of the quarter. :)I hope to start reading The Leavers later on today.
I finished Station Eleven and was a bit disappointed. It had lots of promise but didn't seem to go anywhere. I can't decide what audiobook to read next while I wait for the November reads to roll in. It's a toss up between Lock In or The Prophet.
That's a shame Janice. I just asked you about it over in your thread lol. Should have come here first. As for what's next - I have the prophet on my wishlist and does look good although I do not know for sure but Lock In I can definitely recommend.

That's a shame Janice. I liked Station Eleven
Jackie wrote: "Margo wrote: "Jackie wrote: "Margo wrote: "Mariab wrote: "Cherie wrote: "I am currently reading I, Claudius: from the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius and Deafening...."Ow, must read the one of Anthony Horowitz! He was one of my favorit authors as a child.

I haven't seen your comment yet. I'll answer it on my survey thread.
I'm leaning towards The Prophet, and getting an early start on the group read for SAI King recommends.
I finished The Wheel of Darkness in the wee hours. I couldn't put it down and go to sleep.
Next up in print format is Lincoln in the Bardo. I'm about to find out if it withstands the hype.

I felt the same way about Station eleven. I really didn't get why it was so popular. I did like the the parts about the symphony but overall I gave it a 2.
I am struggling my way through The End of the Point. I don't plan to DNF it, though. I think I will just read it very slowly. :)Still listening to the Brazilian classic Senhora. I am always impressed by José de Alencar's writing.
Lincoln in the Bardo came from the library so I started it right now. I won't be able to renew it because of course it has a long waiting list now. So far I read only 5 or 6 pages, but it is very original.
I also started The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum last weekend in my never ending attempt of better understanding my son.
An interesting selection or books there Sandra. I watched a video on autism and aspergers which was done by Chris Packham. Not sure if you'd know who he is but he is a British Naturalist who presents wildlife programs on TV. I have basically grown up watching his shows. He is awesome in many ways. I have a bit of a crush on him if I'm honest. He recently went public as having Asperger's and has been helping to raise awareness. Very interesting to hear about his experiences.
I didn't know him, Sarah, but just googled him and found his Asperger and Me video. I will watch it tonight. Thank you for the recommendation. He was diagnosed last March (March 30th exactly, hard to forget). So this is kind of new for me. Actually it is a strange mix. The diagnose is new but at the same time I knew it all the time at some level. But thus is the wrong thread for this chat. :)

Sandra, my son also has aspergers. He was diagnosed at 18 and is now 21. I looked up a lot of stuff on the syndrome and am no closer to understanding it now than I was then. I will watch that documentary too - thanks Sarah ;-)
My son is 8, he was 7 at the time of the diagnose. I understand what you say Margo, it is hard to understand. I know there is also kind of a necessity on my side. I feel like I must be doing something else. :)

I will have to go and check out the video.

Thanks for linking the video, Sandra.
I watched it yesterday. It is good. The fact that he understands so well what happens to him, and also he is so well trained to explain facts made it very informative.
I have just watched the video. I thought it was excellent and very informative. I wouldn't expect anything less from Chris Packham tbh. He is always very well informed and enthusiastic about everything he does.
As I said I didn't know him before, but I liked him right away. I think the video was also touching.(Janice will make us stop messing up this thread in 3, 2, 1... :D )
Heh I'm going to get in before Janice. Super interesting convo, but over to the Watcha Doin' thread ;)
