Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I had such a hard time picking my next book! I have no more 'required' reading at the moment so I can choose whatever I want. But now with the 2018 challenge hints I keep thinking what if the book I pick now turns out to be the perfect read for one of the tasks next year?

I decided to go for The Circle. My cousin was super excited about it and lent it to me months ago. I'm not particularly interested in it based on the blurb, would never have put it on my tbr, but I'll give it a go. I see her again in a few weeks and can finally return it to her. Oh, and it's the Dutch translation and I hate reading in Dutch when the original is in English. Actually I think I prefer English for all books (if I don't speak the original language) except ones that were written in Dutch.

I like that sometimes too, and I didn't hate it with 1Q84 either, there was just so much that was never explained.

Most of my questions are ones that simply weren't answered, and some are things that are obviously open to debate. This is truly a book that needs discussion. It would be a great group read.

(view spoiler) There are SO MANY questions! lol

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments You really have me curious, now, KimeyDiann. I have IQ84 on my TBR, but not been able to get to it yet. Hopefully, it will come up next year and I can see what all of your spoiler questions are about. Hopefully Travis or someone can answer for you.

message 1554: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Only one more short story to go for tomorrow and I will be on my last book for my yearly challenge. I started it last month, but others jumped in front. I guess I have really been saving Me: Stories of My Life for last.

message 1555: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I finished IQ84 back on about September 1. Trying to jog my brain because I'm quite certain I understood these things when I finished the book. But I have read many murakamis by now and each one tends to make more sense. I'm going to ruminate on the spoiler for a bit

Margo | 11663 comments I'm listening to Pyramids as the penultimate book for my annual challenge! Sir Terry was so funny and his social commentaries (in this case on religion) were so apt.

Have you read Small Gods, Margo? Made me laugh so much for the same reasons.

message 1560: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yay. I eventually finished The Vagrant. So pleased it's done. Now a nice short Expanse novella with Gods of Risk.

message 1561: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Thanks for the link Travis. I've been meaning to do some googling on the book to get more insight, but just haven't had the time.

@Cherie, you should read the book. There's so much symbolism I'd really like to reread it at some point. I really like the audio version it too. I would struggle with the Japanese pronunciations if I was reading it and I think I would get distracted by that, but I may try it in written form if/when I re-read it.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I just finished The Girl with All the Gifts and I strongly recommend it! It really makes you think, it isn't just a mindless fiction re4ad.

Yes Rusalka, I read it years ago when I could still read print books. I love Prattchet sense of humor and most of his observations are spot on. I must listen to audio version next years.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm just starting a reread of The Miniaturist It's been a few years since I read it and there is a tv adaptation starting sometime in late December for us here in the UK so I felt now was a good time to pick it up again.

message 1566: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Ooh, I'll look out for that. Thanks for the heads up Lisa :-) That was a great book - it gave me a the sense of being in Amsterdam in that time. Was it the of 16th centuary i.e. start of 17th?

message 1567: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Proof of Life just in time for my real life bookclub meeting tonight.

I've started Something for my survey challenge.

message 1568: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Been on a non fiction type thing The Medieval World and now Rings, Swords and Monsters: Exploring Fantasy Literature. Also just bought a bunch more great courses on various topics. I enjoy them and there is no plot to follow it's just college lectures. Listen to a lot or a little doesn't matter you're not going to lose your place

message 1569: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished Gods of Risk and staying with the space setting I'm just starting The Last Colony as i was getting jealous of all those in the Scalzi buddy read and I wanted some Scalzi too.

message 1570: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Ha ha Sarah :-D I finished The Collapsing Empire and I did enjoy it but it left me up in the air. I want more!! I have decided that I'm not going to start anymore unfinished series. By the time the next book comes out I will have forgotten the plot :(

I'm reading The Snow Child on my kindle and Pyramids on audio - the final 2 books for my annual challenge 2017!

message 1571: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Perfect timing for the Snow Child. Do check out the group read thread for the book. We discussed it in some depth.

message 1572: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I've tried reading The Graveyard Book 3 times. Gave up. The audible full cast is supposed to be so great so since it was on sale I bought it. I'm abouy 25% in. I don't know if I can finish listening to this. I think it's time to just finally quit Gaiman altogether. There was one book by him I liked and the rest have been like getting teeth pulled.

message 1573: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Well you've given him a good try. Plenty more books out there that you'll enjoy without his.

I feel the same way, but I have so many 1st in series in my owned books that I'll be improving my situation. While I wait for book 2 of the Collapsing Empire, I'll go back and finish the Old Man's War series.

Janice I'm the same with first of series! They keep putting them is sales in the hopes that you'll buy the full series but I never do. Luckily one of the "1st of series" I own is Old Man's War so the rest of that series will keep me going for a while ;-)

Kristie | 19224 comments Peggy - That’s happened to me a few times this year. Hope it doesn’t last long for you.

Travis - I’m not a Gaiman fan either. I don’t get it. I don’t find his books terrible, just sort of ok.

i am also, i hope it is mainly because i am off work, decorating, spring (winter) cleaning, training mollie etc it should pick up next week when i am back in.

it is odd, i picked oathbringer up and i am also not sure if i am daunted by the size of it, even though i have been looking forward to it for months. it is dificult to be dauntd by a kindle book

hope your slump ends soon peggy :)

message 1582: by Peggy (last edited Nov 24, 2017 08:45AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think it's because I hurried through my last challenge books and they weren't as great as I hoped, and I kind of had a reading overload or something.

I usually have it a few times a year as well, but this was an exceptionally good year. Maybe that's why I read 66 books already while I normally get around 60 done in a year.

Hope you're back to normal again too next week Cody. If even a book like Oathbringer doesn't get you all excited, something is definitely wrong!

Gaimain is a bit hit or miss for me too. I think I'm more into his children's/young adult books than his adult books.

Usually a few days of not reading works for me. And you will have a lot of gophering to do this weekend, so I don't think you will be bored. Also, gophering for the new annual challenge gets me very excited. I can't wait for January 1st to start reading. :)

Yes, I'm still super excited about the challenge and looking forward to start gophering! So maybe the timing is good :)

I had the afternoon off and around 4pm I didn't have anything left to do. Normally I don't watch tv during the day, but I didn't feel like reading so I finally watched the last two episodes of You Me Her.

message 1588: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Not sure I'm in a reading slump but lately I've been going more towards modern scholar and great courses lectures. Not sure I'd classify them as books but since they're audio and I read mostly with audio they're bookish anyway. I did just switch over to My Cousin Rachel which I'm enjoying so far. Go figure. My tastes are so random. I've been running about 4 audio's at a time lately. Listening to a couple hours of each

Cody | 348 comments @sandra @peggy, what is the yearly challenge? is ther a section for it in this group, could you link please?

message 1590: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments Cody - There's a whole area for the yearly challenge. Once Janice posts the new challenge (which will be in the folder below), you can start your own thread and start looking for books that fit the tasks. It's a lot of fun. I hope you join us in the 2018 challenge.

thank you very much :) i could never read 50 books in a year though :( i might have a look anyay to tr to move me away from fantasy

how are people researching for next years now? do the questions stay the same?

message 1593: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't believe anyone has started searching for 2018 yet. The challenge will be completely different and you won't have to read 50 books. This year's challenge you could read 12, 24 , or all 50. There's different levels because of peoples different needs. 12 books is plenty for some where others in the group want a harder challenge such as 50. It's made so anyone should be able to participate and have fun with it. Regardless of the theme. One year it was an alphabet challenge, one year had to read books iver ,500 pages one year they had to be books in a series. What's Janice cooking up for 2018? No one knows.

message 1594: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2652 comments I dropped the challenge for this year. At the beginning I thought I could make it, starting really late, but I cought up in so many challenges and BR, that I forgot all about this one.

message 1595: by Peggy (last edited Nov 24, 2017 09:40AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's a shame Saar. I hope you read some good books while trying :)

@Cody: it would be great if you joined the 2018 challenge! It's always lots of fun and very flexible in terms of what kind of books you decide to read and like Travis says, also how many books. Usually the lowest number of books in order to get a badge is around 12, so that's doable for most people. Because there are also people here who finish those 12 books in the first month, there are additional levels to make it a challenge for everyone.

message 1596: by Saar The Book owl (new)
