Just don't listen to the audio. I did and it freaked me out. There were songs in it from what I recall. Did my head in. I think the book would be better.

It's almost december peggy ;-) As a matter of fact i think i will join you as i not enthralled by my current read The Nix, a break might help, and i think i took on a bit too much for december.

I liked the audio of The Penelopiad. I thought it captured the dark humour of the oddessey very well. The greek gods were such a wierd bunch ;-)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Gwendy's Button Box this afternoon. Listening to Stephen King and Richard Chizmar at the end of the story, I learned that King couldn't finish the book so he asked Chizmar to finish it. It was an interesting story, but a bit of a snoozefest. Maybe it was just me.

I'm debating what to do now. Like Peggy, bad timing. Maybe I'll start The Bear and the Nightingale too.

Oh dear, you've not had much luck with the last two (recently published) King books you've read. I hope it's not all down hill from here.

Both of them were collaborations, so perhaps there wasn't enough King in them. That's what I'm attributing it to.

They say gods, like governments, are a reflection of the people that choose them!

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished a survey challenge read, Something. It didn't appeal to me at all.

I'll start two books today:
The Bear and the Nightingale on audiobook for group themed read
The Tiger and the Wolf on ebook for monthly challenge and buddy read.

message 1665: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Did you deliberately plan your reading to start two books which each have two animals in the title on the same day?

message 1666: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments LOL! I never even noticed. Last months theme for me was reading John Scalzi's books. This month appears to be animals.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments Since my last reporting I finished Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, a very funny and entertaining story, and Mrs. Sherlock Holmes that was very interesting. I had some issues with the author's style in the beginning, but it worked fine in the end.

I started yesterday The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time for the monthly challenge, and I am loving it so far. I was also planning to start The Witches: Salem, 1692 as a parallel non fiction read, but The Curious Incident is being such a fast read, that maybe I would just wait until I am done with The Curious Incident.

And it's a fast read.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Origin this afternoon and will start The Desert Spear for the buddy read this evening. I was not disappointed in the Dan Brown book, since I got a wonderful tour of Spain via the internet, but it was a much tamer story than his previous Robert Langdon books. I figured out what/who long before the end and had to wait until the end to find out if I was correct. I was.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I've been awol for the last couple weeks again. So much catching up to do with everyone here!

I started and finished The Wicked Girls on audio during that time. It was a solid 4 star read/listen for me.

I just started on Reincarnation Blues audio this morning. So far I'm quite liking it.

I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately. I haven't much wanted to visually read any books. I've tried using the yearly challenge to motivate myself, but there is no way I can finish the third section, so that isn't working. lol. I'm sure I'll snap out of it at some point.

Margo | 11663 comments I have just started The Surgeon of Crowthorne: a tale of murder, madness & the love of words aka The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary. It is book club read and i wasn't looking to it but disc 1 of 7 was surprisingly good.

Lots of big words though lol

I guess they can't all be "sit on the edge of your chair and hold your breath exciting", huh? (view spoiler)

message 1679: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to The Two Deaths of Daniel Hayes on Monday evening. I really liked the MC, and the bad guy just gave me the creeps, but it was an on the edge of your chair story, which I really like. I am going to start listening to Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption tonight. I am reading One Good Dog for the monthly challenge and The Desert Spear for a buddy read. I cannot find a book to read for the group read theme - that I want to read right now. It might change after the toppler.

Spring | 6 comments I'm currently reading The Emperor of the Eight Islands by Lian Hearn. I am not sure how I feel about it yet as I'm only about a fifth of the way through. I haven't been able to read it as quickly as I would like because of final exams but it is enjoyable so far. It's definitely more confusing than I would like it to be but the plot is starting to make sense which a big relief for me.

She was a very famous Aussie kids/YA author in the 90s. She wrote under Gillian Rubinstein (her real name). I remember reading some of hers as a kid. My housemates devoured the Tales of the Otori. I really need to read the first this year.

message 1683: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments I finished The Paying Guests last night. Was a bit disappointing. Definitely my least liked Sarah Waters book.

Picked up White Horse last night. Don't think I have read a dystopia this year.

message 1684: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah Cherie some of it was a stretch for sure. I think the series nay have run it's course. And that's nothing against Dan Brown it's more a general statement about series. There seem to be too many being kind of forced on instead of finding a new idea and bringing something new to the table. It's like authors feel if they have fans of certain characters then they'll sell books regardless so they just keep forcing them out

Spring | 6 comments Margo wrote: "Eva wrote: "I'm currently reading The Emperor of the Eight Islands by Lian Hearn. I am not sure how I feel about it yet as I'm only about a fifth of the way through. ..."

I've never actually read any of her books before. I picked this up at the bookstore next to my work while I was on break and I thought it looked interesting. I'm hoping that this book stands up to the praise it has gotten from every review I've seen. It is a bit challenging if you don't know much about Japanese folklore or history so you may find yourself googling certain terms. In the first chapter, it mentions Tengu which are demons. It also mentions the nobles having retainers which I needed to look up online to find the definition of.

Thank you for your well wishes on my exams. University life is stressful but I am almost done... Just one year to go!

I think that it could be a great fit for him then! I was big into manga and anime when I was younger and I really loved the historical ones so I do understand some of what they're saying which is good. If he likes fantasy, perhaps give him The Emperor of the Eight Islands. The series has 4 books it in and I've ordered #2 from the bookstore so we'll see how that is.

Sarah | 18550 comments Kristie wrote: "What did you think of The Last Colony, Sarah? I haven't gotten to that one yet."

It was a bit different to the previous two books as it was more planet based. It helped expand the world though as it talked about colonies (which I guess is obvious from the title). Some interesting things happened so I'm looking forward to see how the rest of the story pans out.
