I saw this is a Kindle Daily Deal today. I added to my TBR but didn't actually buy it yet.

message 1366: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I just started 1Q84! I'm listening on audible and am only an hour and half in so far. Too soon to make a judgment on this 45+ hour listen, but I have high hopes.

message 1367: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments I'm back to reading Wonder Woman: Warbringer, which I wasn't able to finish for the toppler, and Bull Mountain for the yearly challenge.

I have this one, Kimey, but haven't read it yet. The reviews have been positive from my GR friends.

So did I, but I listened to BBC verion which was an all cast performance.

Jackie, I have Magpie Murders and I'm looking forward to it.

message 1373: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I haven't posted in here for a while. I read The Forever War for the toppler which I really enjoyed. I started Brave New World on audio for it too but never finished it in time so I'm still working my way through it. It has turned out a lot better than I expected it to be and the narration is excellent. I am also rereading The Painted Man for the group read but also as i want to read the whole series again before reading the final book in the series. I've put the other group read The Vagrant on hold for a bit as I can't keep focused on it at the moment. I've read quite a lot of it so i will finish it but just not now.

message 1374: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Gray Wolf Island for the monthly challenge.

Next up is A Death in Vienna, if I can find it. I still haven't unpacked my books so I'll have to go hunting for it this evening. This will be a leftover stew challenge read (from last year's geocache challenge).

I saw the BBC Miniserie too, year ago (20 Century. LOL!)

message 1377: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm going to start Enchantress for the yearly challenge. It's a book I got for free on amazon back when I only just had my ereader, and now I finally get to reading it. Free ebooks always make me a bit hesistant, but the reviews are pretty good.

message 1378: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I think I have that one Peggy. Let me know what you think. I kjow what you mean about freebies.

Maria that's the great thing about you tube - you can relive the 20th to hearts content lol

message 1381: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments Peggy - That one is $4.99 here now. I know what you mean about the freebies too. I pick them up because they're free, but then I'm hesitant to read them because I worry about the quality of the writing and the story. I've read some that have been pretty bad, but I've read some good ones too.

message 1382: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I almost never pick up freebies. I get ebook deals emails but I limit my buying to titles I recognize from my tbr. This one's from my early ereader days though, when I wasn't so picky ;-)

So far it's not bad.

message 1383: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments Glad you're enjoying it. I don't pick up as many as I used to when I first got my Kindle, but sometimes I think that a certain book may fit a challenge at some point. They often just sit on my Kindle.

message 1384: by Cherie (last edited Oct 20, 2017 01:29PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think it was Esther, quite some time ago, that gave us a challenge called STUD or DUD. It was to read at least the first 30 to 50 pages in a list of books that you had laying around. If they were DUDS - get rid of them, and if they were STUDS, either finish them, or at least make a note that they were worth finishing. I got rid of about 6 books of the 10 that I chose. I have two that have never been finished yet, but at least I know that I want to. All of the books had been "freebies" and sitting in my ereader.

Some things from the 20s should never be brought back! (I can sustain my argument with sufficient proof, if You like!)

Thank you, Rusalka for finding the thread. It was such a great idea!

message 1389: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I echo the whole conversation about the freebies. Stocked up, reluctant to read, some a hit, some a miss, more discerning about freebies now. I also have Enchantress as a freebie. LOL!

message 1390: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol, apparently something sounded good about this freebie or we wouldn't all have gotten it. I feel like a guinnea pig now!

Margo, Magpie Murders continues to get more interesting. Everytime I think I have figured it out, more people are introduced that can be added to the suspect list!

Midsommer Murders hasn'd been the same since Horowitz stopped writing the scripts. I'd like to bump it up my list but I'm trying very hard to finish off the annual challenge.

message 1395: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I'm readingWicked Bugs: The Louse That Conquered Napoleon's Army & Other Diabolical Insects; this book gives me the creeps. If you don't want to sleep careless anymore, you should read it...
I'm reading Le Guide Officiel To Being British; I'd love to hear what our British members think about it.

message 1396: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments May I whine? I feel like I've been reading Sleeping Beauties for way too long. It's a 25 hours audiobook (720 pages). I started it before the toppler and then set it aside for that week. Another week later and I'm still not finished. I've bumped up the speed to 1.5x, but I have 7 hours left. ARGH!

message 1397: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Too funny, Janice! I have four or five audiobooks that are all this long and over and your complaint is exactly what keeps me from starting them.

At this point, it will likely be a 3 star read for me mainly because it drags along. I don't know how much of the book is King's, or how much of the book is his son Owen's. I read somewhere that Owen tends to be more satirical in his writing, so perhaps he's the main contributor.

I know some people are put off by the satirical political commentary. Many authors do write their books with a political agenda. King certainly wasn't the first, and won't be the last.
