I read [book:Lord of the Flies
way back in high school, Sandra. I can't really remember much of it. Looking forward to see what you have to say about it.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Black Witch and really enjoyed it. I will definitely continue the series.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Next up is The Headmaster's Wager. This is for my real life book club meeting later this month.

message 1205: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments I just started The Baker's Secret.

message 1206: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Finished The Buried Giant last night and it was awesome! It is a fable and is full of deep, hidden meaning, most of which was lost on me, but as a tale of ancient Briton with knights and dragons and mythology, it was wonderful. I am basking in the afterglow of a great book :-)giant

I am starting The Paris Wife next.

I'm glad you enjoyed The Buried Giant, Margo. I read it a year or so ago and didn't care for it.

Margo | 11663 comments I'd imagine it's a "marmite" book! It touched something in me though.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Margo wrote: "I'd imagine it's a "marmite" book! It touched something in me though."

Yes, I think it is definitely a marmite book. It's a shame because I thought I would enjoy it. Oh well, you can't win them all.

message 1210: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm starting See What I Have Done for a buddy read.

message 1211: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Johannessen | 13 comments I just bought a copy of The Uses of Pessimism: And the Danger of False Hope by Roger Scruton.
I think it might be interesting.

message 1212: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments It actually sounds interesting, Thomas. Looking forward to your thoughts when you are done.

message 1213: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I finished 1Q84 I felt it would be a solid 4 star but I think if I ever rate or review it or any of the about 20 I'm behind on it's a 5. It did take a bit to get into it but it was a long book so I wasn't concerned with a alowish start. I did like and appreciate the interview with the two translators at the end it was interesting to hear from the horse's mouth exactly what's involved in translating

Then I flew through Private which I only got because it was free and well great marketing ploy because I'll continue the series over time

message 1214: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Johannessen | 13 comments I was planning on starting on Beren and Lúthien today.
But a friend of mine has had me reading snippets from Fifty Shades of Grey to her.
Because apparently that is hilarious.
And now I've read far more of those books than I ever cared for. After reading these bits and pieces, I sure as hell will not sit down and read more.

message 1215: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments :-D

message 1216: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Lol Thomas. I'm not going to ask what the incentive for you to read those snippets are :P

message 1218: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Reading Before the Fall on kindle - 25% in and it seems to be a decent thriller.fall
Listening to The Thirteenth Tale which is a brilliantly written gothic read but I am not so impressed with the narration by Jenny Agutter.

message 1220: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished See What I Have Done and The Headmaster's Wager.

I started Beautiful Creatures as the next on the list for audiobooks, and on ebook, Waterfall for both my Left-over stew and survey challenges.

message 1221: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments I finished rereading Lord of the Flies. Still incredible disturbing...
I am still reading The Witchfinder's Sister for the monthly read, and I'm finding it very atmospheric.
I also started Robinson Crusoe in audio book, so far it is ok. And I thought Verne was descriptive...

Kristie | 19227 comments I'm wrapping up The Promise for the yearly challenge and reading The Witchfinder's Sister for the monthly read.

message 1224: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm starting His Bloody Project for the monthly challenge. It sounds intriguing and I'm looking forward to reading it, but I'm a bit worried that it's slow and/or complicated. I really need quick uncomplicated reads which require little brain capacity right now.

message 1225: by Joan (new)

Joan @Cherie - since you are reading The Paris Wife, I thought you'd be relieved to know, https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/11/us...,
"Entire islands have been reduced to rubble, streets have turned to rivers, cranes have buckled and more than 30 people have died. But the six-toed Hemingway cats are fine." all 54 of them.

message 1226: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Oh! Thanks for the info Joan. Hemingway is my favorite author, and I've been to Key West many, many times. I lived in Fort Lauderdale until a few years ago when I moved back home to Illinois.

message 1231: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments I'm jealous, Jake. I wish I could read it for the first time again.

message 1232: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Sep 16, 2017 08:33AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished two books yesterday - Beautiful Creatures and Waterfall. Both were a bit too YA for me.

I will start Ready Player One on audiobook today for the monthly challenge & a buddy read. I intend on starting The Wind Through the Keyhole, but I have to find it in the boxes downstairs first. It will be for my survey challenge.

message 1233: by Jake (new)

Jake Newman | 91 comments Thanks Guys!

message 1234: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Good luck with that search Janice! I also intend to start Ready Player One today. I'm a bit nervous as I've so many rave about it that I almost expect to be disappointed :-/

Speaking of disappointment - I've just finished The Forgotten Garden for my Survey Says challenge and it was not as good as I had hoped. Ah well, another one off the tbr!

message 1235: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I couldn't find it. I need to get down there and get organized. I picked up a book at the library the other day, The Borden Murders: Lizzie Borden and the Trial of the Century, so I'll read that instead. It's a non-fiction account of the murders. I was surprised to find it in the children's non-fiction section of the library. World Cat has it rated for high school, but my library has it in the children's library. It's not the first time I've found something shelved incorrectly there.

message 1236: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I think ready player one and it's enjoyment depends on how you remember the eighties. It's the nostalgia

message 1237: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I <3 '80's lol

message 1238: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments I'm reading The Wangs vs. the World. A bit meh, these people are very annoying but I'm hoping it gets better in the second half. Also reading Mademoiselle Chanel for the Historical Fiction with Real People challenge. I knew nothing about her, except her tweed suits. Interesting. And then I picked up Does This Beach Make Me Look Fat?: True Stories and Confessions. Very funny. I can identify .

Mariab | 3059 comments Travis sivarT wrote: "I think ready player one and it's enjoyment depends on how you remember the eighties. It's the nostalgia"

I think even if you are a millennial would enjoy it, it has such an action pace!

message 1240: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I have questioned how the book would resonate with the young uns out there. I actually think it's genius to make a movie out of it as it will give a visual to those who may not have gotten some of it

message 1241: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Assassin's Quest which I rated 4 stars. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It's quite good so far. It is funny at times and looks like it's going to have more depth to it than I expected.

message 1244: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments I finished The Witchfinder's Sister, and rated it 2 stars.

I started now Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.
