Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have put Tin Man back on my TBR. It wasn't a bad book by any means, but I have decided that having three books on the go at the same time doesn't really work for me.

message 1053: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I had a similar experience with Children of Time which I decided to drop. It wasn't a terrible book but I wasn't enjoying it that much and I was listening to Doomsday Book at the same time. I was reminded of your comments about having 2 fantasy's on the go at the same time!

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments 2/3's into Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk for the Survey Challenge.

I keep seeing in the rules for the monthly challenges that the books we read can't be used for the Geocaching Challenge. I thought that was over...?

message 1056: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments No, that's still the rule. You can use books for multiple purposes, except reading the same book for the monthly and yearly challenges. I don't think it has ever been different.

message 1057: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19227 comments The geocache challenge is over, but the rule is actually that you can't use a book for the monthly challenge and the yearly challenge. If someone is still writing geocache challenge, it is probably a mistake and they mean the all about you challenge, which is our current yearly challenge. As Peggy said above, the rule is still the same.

message 1058: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19227 comments Just a thought - Some people that didn't finish the geocache challenge were trying to finish it on their own this year. I'm not sure if that's why you saw the challenge referred to.

message 1059: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments @Peggy and Kristie,

That's what I thought...copy & paste mistake was what I was thinking, but it never hurts to ask.

message 1060: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments That's exactly what happened! I will correct the monthly challenge right away. Thanks for pointing that out.

message 1061: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oops, I didn't notice you wrote geocache challenge. Glad it's been cleared up!

message 1062: by Lisa (last edited Aug 06, 2017 11:09AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Upstairs Room. I had very mixed feelings about it. It was a fairly quick read and was genuinely creepy on occasions, but it didn't really go anywhere in the end. It promised much but I was left feeling a bit shortchanged. Some of the characters started to grate on me too, and their reactions often didn't feel realistic. I gave it 3 stars.

I am now starting House of Names.

message 1063: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet (finally) and will finish Age of Swords shortly.

Next up from my home library is The Red Tree for the monthly challenge, and on audiobook Those Who Wish Me Dead for the group themed read.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Finished Caine Mutiny and have started The Violets of March for the yearly challenge

message 1066: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Curious to hear your thoughts on The Violets of March, Anne. I read it last month for the yearly challenge but was a bit disappointed by it.

message 1067: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started Elizabeth Street for the survey challenge.

Sarah | 18550 comments Peggy wrote: "I started Elizabeth Street for the survey challenge."

Which task are you using it for?

message 1069: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments One of those tasks where you had to answer with a number and read the corresponding book on your shelf. Not sure what task it was, height in inches I think.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Finished Theft of Swords and was frced to go buy Rise of Empire I'll start it tomorrow. Best believe the hype is real

message 1071: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19227 comments I just started The Breakdown as a buddy read. I'm hoping this will help me with the issue I've been having of not finishing (or creeping through) books lately.

I thought it was sweet, Peggy. But there were too many co-instances between Esther's Diary and Emily that were just too cute. And the ending didn't seem finished, you know?

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments I'm reading The Late Show by Michael Connelly - new series from him :)

I bought the follow up after reading the first but for some reason haven't actually gone back to read it.

Love that series! I am in the middle of Heir of Novron but put it aside for a group read - must get back to it. Love that it's so easy to do that since they're all 2 in 1 books! Great value :-)

I think sometimes you can be on the verge of a binge read but if you decide to read one or two other books first kind of breaks that binge momentum

message 1082: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah. I'm glad riyria wasn't really discovered by anyone I know early on to where I had to wait for each book to come out

message 1083: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I like the characters. While it's obvious there's a Tolkien influence there it's not a copy . I also like how it's family friendly without being dumbed down or written specifically for a young audience

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Peggy wrote: "You're fast! But yes, I agree."

:) Peggy, I usually read a book a day if under 500 pages. I hate day-time TV, so I read :D

message 1085: by Lisa (last edited Aug 09, 2017 07:12AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have abandoned House of Names. I just couldn't connect with the writing style or the characters which is a shame as I was really looking forward to it. I haven't yet decided whether I will give it another try in the future.

I'm not sure what to pick up next. I'm torn between The Observations and A Long Long Way

Edit: I decided to go with The Observations as it's the book I chose for the August monthly challenge.

I loved that short story, Margo. They made that into a movie long ago. I saw it on AMC when I lived in Mobile.

message 1090: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished my themed read, Those Who Wish Me Dead. It was a fast paced action/thriller that I really enjoyed.

Next up on audiobook is Son of the Shadows. That will be for my survey challenge.

Anne you might be able to answer a question: in the radio play was sandwiched between 2 adds for the marine corps. Was that part of the story or just random irony?

message 1092: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I just finished reading Beneath a Scarlet Sky which was a giveaway for me. I gave this WWII book about a 17 year old boy in Milan Italy 5 stars. My review:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I also finished The Unseen World which took me awhile to review. I enjoyed the book and have it 3 1/2 stars but I apparently expected more than others.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Now I am reading Insane Clown President: Dispatches from the 2016 Circus which is just reminding me of how much the last election was like a Jerry Springer show.

Last night I started Forty Rooms which looks promising. The book is broken up into very small segments each one a room from a young girls life...and then into adulthood. Right now she is 4 1/2-6 and she sees ghosts along with imaginary friends but I don't think they stay with her into adulthood. Anyway it is very descriptive writing.

Margo, it was random from what I know.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Finished The Rubber Band by Rex Stout for the Survey Challenge, now 1/3 into Christine by Stephen King for the Survey Challenge.

message 1096: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I finished And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer and loved this little book:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Now I am reading Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI and it is very good so far. I never knew about this tribe of Indians sitting on land with so much oil. Probably the only Indians that didn't get completely screwed by the white man.

Sarah | 18550 comments I just finished Hunter's Run for the group read. Now on to The Ballad of Black Tom because it's short and GR keeps telling me I'm behind on my yearly challenge. I thought I'd squeeze in a few shortish books to make up the number. Lol.

I'm behind in my yearly challenge too, Sarah, so I reckon I will be resorting to short books soon to try and catch up!

message 1100: by Sarah (new)
