At first glance I took it for a presidential biography.

I finished Emma in the Night
by Wendy WalkerThe story is about two sisters, Cass and Emma, who disappear one night. Cass shows up again three years later and tells a harrowing story about their imprisonment on an island. The fact that the girls' mother has narcissistic personality disorder is central to the story. Okay psychological thriller. 3 stars

Yeah, it's not for everyone. Plus, it's not really a crime novel per se, but rather a look at why he did what he did here. It's also a look at sanity vs. insanity in the scope of criminal justice -- lots going on in this novel.

I'm getting a jump on the Halloween season by reading Cold Moon Over Babylon by the late southern master of the golden age of horror, Michael McDowell. I'm almost half way through and still don't know what it will turn out to be about. So far it's a very atmospheric tale of a small Florida town dealing with a vicious murder. It has a great southern gothic vibe to it.
About to start reading
The Blackbird Season by Kate Moretti. After finishing a cracking good mystery- suspense from author E.C. Diskin,
Depth of Lies https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished About Face
by Donna LeonCommissario Guido Brunetti tackles organized crime when a truck company owner is murdered near Venice. As usual, Guido's personal life takes up a lot of the story. Average mystery. 3 stars

A DNF for me.
Return to the Little Coffee Shop of Kabul by Deborah Rodriguez https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Hi, I'm fairly new but I've been reading books like the Dan Brown Books lately. But I have a question on another subject as well, and didn't know where to put it. I would like to know if there are books that anyone knows of that are similar to "Kingsman" except in traditional novel form. I don't necessarily mean the "kids saves the world" type, but rather untapped potential that just needs the right chance, if you will. Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

I just finished reading Evil Under the Sun by Agatha Christie. You can read my review at http://world-of-sleuths.blogspot.com/....I am starting to read Killing Floor by Lee Child.
I just finished Hawthorne's House of the Seven Gables - I wasn't expecting so much of a mystery, but it really was spooky sometimes, and the plot escalated expertly to lead to the surprising/not-so-surprising conclusion. A lot of very odd characters too, just helped to develop the eerie feeling. A good read.
I'm reading a bit of pulp fiction these days. Just finished The Return of Dr. Fu-Manchu by Sax Rohmer, the 2nd book in that series. Now reading the 4th book in the Modesty Blaise adventure series, A Taste for Death by Peter O'Donnell.
Just finished The Gun by Fuminori Nakamura about a young man who becomes obsessed with a gun that he has found. A good exercise in suspense as we wonder whether he will go ahead with his plan to kill someone.
I finished Skinny Dip
by Carl HiaasenI always like Hiaasen's comic novels, which usually have a message about humans damaging our environment.
In this book, biologist Chaz Perrone throw his wife (Joey) off a cruise ship because he thinks she found out about his pollution scam. Joey survives....and plots a diabolical revenge. Fun story. 3.5 stars

Murder as a Second Language
by Joan HessIn this addition to the series, Claire Molly investigates the death of a student in an 'English as a Second Language' class. Claire seems to be just filling time since she rcently married, her daughter is a teen getting ready for college, and she hired a manager for her bookstore. Not a great book. 2 stars

I'm finishing up Every Dead Thing by John Connolly and will be starting The Late Show by Michael Connelly. Both for group reads.
There was lot that counts as criminal in
Little Bee , but not nearly as much fun as Barbara's Skinny Dip and considerably more redeeming social value than her Murder as a Second Language. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Great to find a new crime series! Resurrection Bay by Aussie author Emma Viskic is #1, and #2 is waiting on my shelf!
My review: 4★ https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I have just finished a read that was meant to be suspenseful and wasn't.
The Blackbird Season by Kate Moretti https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished
When the Grits Hit the Fan A good quick read where the heroine isn't some flighty, whiny, bitchy airhead for once. A decent mystery and plot. Had a few typos and needed a little editing as the sentence structure didn't flow very well in places for awkward reading. And am I the only one that finds it disturbing that in all these cozy mysteries where the MC is a chef/baker/any kind of food prep person that they allow or bring their animals into the kitchen? Gross.

Not a detective story but if you're interested in the 'mysteries' of the universe: I finished Astrophysics for People in a Hurry
by Neil deGrasse TysonThe well-known astrophysicist presents an infomative (and fun) overview of cosmology. He talks about the big bang, dark matter, dark energy, galaxies, planets ..... hot cocoa and Chuck Berry (among other things). 3.5 stars
