Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton Ethan Fromeand for something as different as possible, yet still with an awesome twist, Triggerfish Twist by Tim Dorsey
Triggerfish Twist
Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas has a shocking ending. Hope telling you that doesn't ruin it for you.
Fingersmith and The Little Stranger by Sarah WatersMy Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier
Someone Like You and other short story collections by Roald Dahl
Seven Little Australians by Ethel Turner
Thinking back, I am embarrassed to admit this: Ender's Game. In perspective, I NOW feel foolish I didn't expect the ending.
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay.

Haha. Same here. I was younger and caught up in the game playing strategy in the book and that possibility just went over my head.
The reason this is one of my favorite books is because Megan Whalen Turner (the author) does a spectacular job of keeping the reader 'in the dark' (so to speak) until the end. Read it and be blown away!

Yes when you have an unreliable narrator(which is punishable by low rating) you can do that.
Lena wrote: "Pretty much anything by Jodi Piccoult."I personally find all her books you expect the unexpected.... so it's no longer a surprise.

I have to second this! And the sequels are even better.
Not sure what Aaron's point is.
The Boundless by Kenneth Oppel The BoundlessThe Ice People by Rene BarjauelTHE ICE PEOPLE - PYRAMID V2913
I just finished reading Behind Her Eyes, and even though I knew a surprise twist was coming, and had been trying to guess what it was, I was still blown away by the unexpected ending.
Yay Pamela! You mentioned two novels that I love but almost never see anyone else mention here on GR: This Star Shall Abide and The Ice People :)
I second Liar! Also 7 Souls it had one of the biggest twists I have ever read but it is YA.
Dead Things also knocked me for a loop.
Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore by Matthew J. Sullivan. It's been years since I read it but The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin is a classic and quick read.
The Space Between Worlds kept me revising what I thought the ending would be practically every chapter - so many twists!

I knew it was there, but forgot just how it snuck up on you.
Also, Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow.
