Kirsten (kmcripn) Happy National Oyster Day!

Oysters are rich in zinc, calcium, iron, selenium, vitamin A, and vitamin B12, but are low in food energy.

Remember, oysters must be either consumed alive or cooked alive. When dead, they cannot be eaten safely.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm sorry, Amber, but it was on this day in 2000 that Sir Alec Guinness, English actor of stage and screen known for his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas's original Star Wars trilogy, died.

Of course, he was also incredible as George Smiley in the mini-series based on Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

I was referring to the fact that I hadn't yet noticed any changes to my GR homepage. I was 22 when Sir Alec died.

I'll wait to celebrate when National Apple month rolls around in October, Kirsten.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Happy Work Like A Dog Day!

(Kind of strange since if I worked like MY dog, I'd spend 90% of my time asleep.)

Amber Martingale Kirsten, I thought that was just cats?

message 8464: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Let me tell you, the cats in my neighborhood are way more active than my dog! Of course, she's 17 and I joke she's retired from dog life!

message 8465: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Well, there's your answer why she sleeps so much! She's old enough to have earned it.

message 8466: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) She still walks every day and is interested in life! She doesn't see or hear very well, but she is still very engaged in life. She still wants to go for a walk every day, she wants to play ball occasionally. Every day is blessing for me.

Amber Martingale Given that my dog, Buttercup, lived to be over 18 years old and my parents had her put to sleep because advanced throat cancer made her loose 20 pounds in about 2 weeks, I can tell you from experience to cherish every day you have with her.

I missed Buttercup's last couple weeks because I was in a coma in the hospital during that time...and that was 13 years ago!

I cherish every day with my four cats, my Bermins are 14 years old, quite old for a breed, but still going great.

My last two Bermins Bobby and Candy both died at 14 years old, 6 months apart.

I adore my cats so much and feel lucky to have them.

Members, friends I hope you will go to the new thread created by the two ladies that interviewed me on Tuesday.

It is in the general threads

"What Makes This Group/Club Your Home".

As this group has proven a great success, as the ladies have done an enormous about of research on this group, and nearly every top group on goodreads and also other sites.

Over two years of threads have been checked on hear, and our story and the research of the ladies could be a massive marketing took for this group and future groups.

The more who do the survey the better.

So grateful for those that help with this and the success of the group.

Gary, you just described my two cats, except my tuxedo is female and my other is male. Both 15, both rescues, and they get treated like royalty. Both are showing signs of age. :-(

Kirsten (kmcripn) On August 6th, 1945, an American bomber dropped the world’s first atomic bomb over Hiroshima City. The entire city was devastated by the heat and shock waves of the blast, producing numerous civilian casualties.

On this day, the Peace Memorial Ceremony (free entry) is held in front of the Hiroshima Peace City Memorial Monument erected in the Peace Memorial Park to appease the souls of those killed by the atomic bomb and to pray for eternal peace on Earth. During this ceremony, the Peace Declaration, appealing for the abolition of nuclear weapons and for the realization of eternal world peace, is delivered by the Mayor of Hiroshima City and is transmitted worldwide.

At 8:15 a.m., which is the exact time when the atomic bomb was dropped, the Peace Bell is rung and citizens, either at the ceremony, at home, or at work offer silent prayers for one minute for the repose of the souls of the atomic bomb victims and for peace.

No. Mom and I couldn't afford it and neither of us was in a health position to be able to train a puppy before we moved BACK to Illinois from Arizona less than a week after I got out of the physical rehab hospital. A 25 year old on a walker when she's not in her wheelchair is not the best way to leash train a puppy.

And by the time I was able to walk around w/o my walker and no longer needed my own wheelchair, Mom and I had found an apartment that didn't allow pets other than birds or fish unless they were already with you when you moved in.

I stopped needing my wheelchair long before I officially stopped needing a walker but I'd given up my walker by accident because I trashed it by falling down some steps at the Belleville Public Square 2-1/2 weeks after getting back to Illinois. After that, if I needed a walker, I borrowed Mom's OR I pushed Mom around in her wheelchair.

Even today, 13 years later, I'm still not financially able to care for a pet, except maybe a tank of goldfish... .

Hiroshima, Nagasaki and the firebombing of Dresden are the three events that turned WWII from a "just war' according to that doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church into an "unjust war," because of all the civilians MURDERED in those attacks. In the case of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it wasn't just that generation of Japanese civilians our US/Allied governments murdered, but also the CHILDREN, GRAND CHILDREN AND GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN of the survivors. FOUR GENERATIONS!

Aside from my pride, most of my injuries were to my fingers and a palm wide bruise on my stomach from the walker handles.

Fish are OK if you don't want to physically play with a pet. For physical play, even a pet rat is better than fish...and I really don't like rats.
