My son's birthday today. He's 12! Have voted in the European Union referendum and we'll know the results tomorrow. Unsettling times for sure.

Although in Jersey we don't vote, as not in the EU.

best to stay in I think

Horn: Thanks for the info.

Sean (again): I hope you guys do too...no need for the world financial markets to have ANOTHER apoplectic fit... .

Janet: I think the British racists are taking lessons from Trump.

Never heard her version.

Of course they're gonna plummet! The "Leave" idiots got their way though it'll take at least another 2 years for the UK to finish the Brexit... .

I guess I'm one of those thick leave idiots then Amber.

I came online here for an escape, but this EU trauma is following everyone everywhere.

How dare I have an opinion (which by the way my American friends millions of UK people are trying to have the vote overturned) yep democracy I know!

There are always several layers to everyone's opinion, never judge and always be kind to everyone.

I'm done.

Don't take Amber so seriously, Kimberley. She has very strong feelings and can come off rather offensively. I don't agree with your vote. But it's YOUR vote.

We have our own issues in this country. Trust me on this. I'd swap with you in a flash to get away from the gun nuts and have decent health care.

Kimberley I'm sorry you're offended. Nothing here is ever personal. Kirsten is absolutely right, your vote is your vote. No one is disputing that. But I will say that this result has legitimised for what I hope is a minority the right to be grossly offensive in a racist way. And that isn't acceptable in my book. Humans first. Always.

So, pandas it is!

It (and Trump's supporters) are part of wave of dissatisfaction with current politicians. Unfortunately, it also gives racists and other hate-filled people an excuse to crawl out of their holes.

We have to be careful and not associate everyone that supports Trump or the Leave campaign with the nasty parts of humanity.

message 8283: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Jason wrote: "Racist is such a cliche these days. I am anti-spiders"

I remember hearing a joke years ago: "there's no reason to be bigoted when there are so many reasons to dislike people on an individual basis".

message 8284: by Jason E. (new)

Jason E. Fort (fortress23) | 154 comments One thing people seem to do is mistake racism for caution. There are some out there (like me) who have no trust for the radical form (which is really closer to original Islam than most would ever like to admit) of Islam. Does that mean close borders? In my opinion no - but you sure need to have a reliable check system in place, or things like Paris and Orlando will happen way more often.
And - Islam is not a race. There are white Muslims, black Muslims, Polynesian Muslims, and although I've never met them, I've heard there are Latino Muslims. But the religion itself is not a race. And illegal aliens can be any race as well. It is the threat of these actions people may take that scares some into caution. And Bette Safe Than Sorry has gotten me where I am in life, so it's not exactly a bad policy.

And don't forget those two cockroaches (Jackson & Sharpton), that crawl out of their holes, to stir everything up and play the race card.

message 8287: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Just because J&S stir everything up about race, doesn't mean there isn't a problem.

When a Hispanic in a nearby town who is mentally ill starts throwing rocks or a small black child in Cleveland plays with a toy gun or a black teenager in Florida is carrying a bag of Skittles, does not mean they should be murdered by police or pretend police.

J&S can be annoying and pushy, but if you were a black or Hispanic maybe you want to see pushy.

Kirsten's right that It is YOUR vote, Kimberley, but I think that in a couple of years the UK is gonna regret voting to leave the EU. She's also right that I do have strongly held opinions.

Kirsten: Amen! Re: Getting away from the gun nuts and getting decent health care.

Perri: Raccoons look kind of shifty too for the same reason you say pandas look shifty. The eye patches.

Jason: Exactly. That's why I keep telling friends of mine that "Geographically there's no difference between a legal immigrant and an illegal one." They usually give me a blank stare and say "What?" To which I reply: "There's no difference between legal and illegal immigrants are far as WHERE they come from because if you have LEGAL immigrants from a country, you will ALSO get illegals from there. Which means if you've got legal Kiwis, you're gonna get some illegal Kiwis as well." If they don't know what a "Kiwi" is, I use the word "limey" which they DO know. And if there's anyone here who is from the UK but doesn't like being called a "Limey," I apologize.

Horn/Kirsten: Anyone who uses religion as a hate tool, regardless of their color or religion is a cockroach. This includes the inbred trailer trash known as the Westboro Baptist Church. To quote an elderly African American man who was a character in the movie version of the Stephen King novel The Green Mile, when he was referring to guests on The Jerry Springer show: "Inbred trailer trash. All they talk about is fucking."

One of my pet peeves about the evangelicals is how far they are from Christ's teachings. Did he ever speak out against the things they do? No. That was that misogynist Paul. No, he spoke out against rich people. What do they say about them? Nothing.

However, regardless of my religious beliefs, they should have NOTHING to do with public policy.

Now, can we get back to non-political stuff? I get enough of that when I turn on NPR in the mornings!

Jason E. Fort (fortress23) | 154 comments That's too bad Aymen - I can get along with anyone. But in the words of Popeye - "IyamwhatIyam and that's all that Iyam." People can have different opinions than you, and disagree with you, and that doesn't make them a racist or a bigot. I have my opinions, I express them, and I don't apologize for them. However, I will not tell you that you absolutely have to think like me. This isn't a foreign concept, and some people were doing it long before America, and definitely do it better than Americans do today.

message 8299: by Aymen (new)

Aymen Ben cheikh worrying about who enters the States is an opininion that I can't discuss because I m not American, and I m not living.
the only thing that I didn t like is that you think that Islam itself is close to the radical form, that the danger is from the religion not from the extremists. Extremism is against the teachings of Islam, most of the muslims are peaceful, living in different countries doing their job contributing in society. there are bad and good people in every religion race or colour, and some bad people try to hide their hatred behind religion, . the medias are showing the bad muslims, who are a minority, and say: this is Islam, these are the muslims. they never talk about muslims helping people. When a muslim shoots innocent people they talk immediatly about terrorism and blame the entire muslim community, when a black man shoots innocent people they use the words gang violence but when a white person shoots afro americans in a church or muslim students in the street they talk about mental health and depression, the killer becomes a victim, they don t even blame him. I personnaly prefer to blame the killers for what they did and not who they are. And it s nice to worry about who enters the US, but even if you close the borders, there is a big problem, free gun policy, whe you allow people to own guns, you allow them to kill each other. I hope this post don t offend anyone. and I m not posting again about this.

message 8300: by Jason E. (last edited Jun 28, 2016 01:07PM) (new)

Jason E. Fort (fortress23) | 154 comments For the record, I don't get my research about Muslims or Islam from the media, but from the hadiths (the Sira) and the Quran - and then compare the disturbing parts in the actual doctrine (which if it's doctrine, then a 'good Muslim" should follow all of it, right?) to the actions and incidents caused by that radical few. While I know most Muslims are peaceful, I simply question how closely do they think they should follow their own texts dictated down through the ages.
