Amber Martingale Blaming the criminals for their actions is common sense, Aymen, and as I've repeatedly said about humanity in general and Americans specifically is that we abhor anything that reeks of common sense the way vampires are SUPPOSED to abhor sunlight, garlic, holy water, silver, stakes, crosses/crucifixes and roses!

Jason, the same thing can be said of any religion: "how closely do they think they should follow their own texts dictated down through the ages."

I'm calling time on this people. I'm respectfully asking that we move on, please.

Glad all went well, Sean.

Amber Martingale I have a series of home exercises to do between visits to my physical therapist and I know it's gonna hurt so if I seem to be unusually long winded or angry or both...that's why.

Sean, like Janet, I'm glad it all went well at your Mum's funeral.

Who remembers STAR TREK from it's original run in the 1960's? Those of us who do, might enjoy this from Pop Mech: http://www.popularmechanics.com/cultu...

Absolutely. It's useless to argue with Amber. She holds her views strongly and isn't afraid to argue ad infinitum.

It's easy to take offense at her tone, but I do believe her heart is in the right place.

Aymen Ben cheikh came home with coffee in my hand, almost fell on stairs but I held on my cup, result: a black wall ...

It wasn't directed at anyone in particular and I agree Kirsten, Amber is Amber! ;-)

Just here we're like a global family and more often than not have each others' backs. We don't need to go down the religious/political route here. There's enough of that everywhere else.

Two subjects will always course arguments

Politics and religion. Good to keep away from.

Sadly I have to announce Autumn is leaving as a moderator, not been on line much, health issues, surgery, time and work.

Janet and I will need some help.

Thank you to Autumn for her help and time.

Not quite ad inifinitum, Kirsten. I stopped arguing about why I believe real paper books are better for the environment than e readers are and that was at Janet's request.

Janet: Haven't been at it long but it already seems to be helping somewhat and I am saying that very cautiously. Don't want egg on my face if it turns out it's NOT working and I have to have surgery. Ugh...I hate having surgery.

Jason: Whatever kind I can afford. Re: Coffee.

Sean: Sorry to hear about Autumn's issues and that she's leaving us.

Lorrea - WhatChaReadin'? (whatchatreadin) Anyone using the LITSY app. It's like Instagram and goodreads had a baby!! You can only post bookish things in the app and you have to reference a book each time you make a post. It's a new app and still in the beginning stages.

message 8315: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I, too, am really sorry about Autumn. She's a wonderful woman with a great wit. I hope it's not too serious. But I imagine being a moderator takes a lot more time than we really appreciate.

Thanks to ALL mods for putting up with us.

Sharon

3-4 weeks ago, my wife and I bought a Vertical Gym.

It is a killer, so hard. I do about 4 minutes, then another 4 minutes then at the moment that's it.

My wife lasts 2 minutes, that's it.

So hard on legs and arms and shoulders !!

Yay! I loved her in those movies you mentioned. To think that Errol Flynn died at bout 1960, and yet Olivia is still alive. I have a brief thought for Joan Fontaine as well.

Died 1959 ages 50 years old ErrolFlynn, heart attack.

Olivia and Joan had a legendary feud, from back in the early 40's when Olivia De Havilland won the Oscar before her sister, and also the next year when both were nominated.

Joan Fontaine said a few years ago, I bet my sister will live longer than me as well to get the better of me, and she did.

Joan died 2-3 years ago, her older sister keeps going.

Thanks for the details. May Joan RIP, but she wasn't quite as world class in looks as Olivia was. Olivia managed to upstage Joan, who, however, was not a bad actress per se.

She was the only character to die in the film, yet she is the last remaining cast member alive.

Anna Lord (annalordauthor) | 184 comments chat chat...not sure if this fits here...here goes...
I was wondering if this is true for readers who like to write: When I read a book I often think about how I would have omitted a scene or altered some dialogue etc. I thought this was something every reader did but then I spoke to a few people and they said they never do that while reading. So, is it only reader/writers who do that in their heads, or is it just me?
Feedback appreciated.

Yes, it's something I tend to do Anna, but I'm also a writer. :)

message 8335: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments Interesting question. I do consider myself a writer-to me reading and writing just go hand in hand, but I never have done those mental alterations. It would feel like adding strokes or erasing on someone else's painting But I've never written a book or tried to get things published, so maybe that's the difference. I suspect you've had editors who make corrections to your work, so maybe it's more natural for you?

message 8336: by Jason E. (new)

Jason E. Fort (fortress23) | 154 comments I have self published four novels, but I read Three or four stories at a time. I don't intentionally notice small grammatical errors or typos, but I notice them in the works of the biggest names from time to time. As for critiquing actual story lines, I have always felt like who am I to do that? I like constructive criticism to my work from others, but when I read criticism about what someone should have or haven't said, and yet they do not write themselves - it sets me aback to pause...not a fan of that. Anything that appears to me like Monday morning quarterbacks makes me throw up a wall, and I choose not to listen further. I take this same approach to the whole anti-police movement. Can't stand Monday morning quarterbacks

Sometimes I do, depends on how awful I find the grammar.

Anna, since I read a lot of ARCs I find myself doing a lot of editing on those. On other titles, I find myself "writing" what I think would happen next in the story. Something that can be disappointing when its a book in a series, and it doesn't turn out the way I expected.

Not on here at all today.

Two weeks off work, after last 2 weeks needed a break.

Now hectic being off.

Gardening, lots of Wimbledon, out for lunches.

Not played tennis for two weeks, not felt like it.

Sorting cupboards, clothes, loads to do.

No walks, no tennis, no snooker...!

Hopefully will get back into soon, but enjoying watching.

Great to be off work, resting.

Last 2-3 weeks have been tough.

Now chill out, and get on with it !

Amber Martingale Right now, musically speaking, I am in a "Christmas in July" jag. God...they DO NOT make talent like they used to! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlFTQ... Bing Crosby, still one of the best!

message 8348: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Definitely, Amber. I love Bing's voice. He was from my home state. Did you know he couldn't read music? But he could definitely sing.

message 8349: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I know he went to high school in East St. Louis which is just on the Illinois side of the state border between IL. and MO. I remember a scene in either Going My Way or The Bells of St. Mary's where he sings his high school song.

As to your comment about reading music, I did not know that but I'm not sure Al Jolson could, either. Maybe one of us should look THAT up!

Luciano Pavarotti: another one of the best. I still start bawling like a baby when I hear his version of "Gesu Bambino," which is the current item on my Christmas playlist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdxHS... I forgot the Vienna Boys Choir was also involved.
