It is, isn't it? I started reading too, and now I'm on Youtube looking for documentaries! :D
Oh boy.

Excellent! :-D let me know what you find. I'm genuinely interested. I always believed the myth so this has come as a surprise about not being able to get past adult shoulders.

Groovy Lee I absolutely do not like snakes--AT ALL!! I can't imagine anyone wanting to snuggle up to one at night, either. In the summer, where I live, if you stand and wait, you'll see one crawling out of the woods and on its way across the street....Disgusting!

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 181 comments No thank you to Snakes. But I'm terrified of SPIDERS! :-/

What's that phobia of spiders? I have it. My baby cat found a big wood spider this evening while I was making a sandwich. He kept batting toward me and I kept backing up while screaming my lungs out. I finally got into my shower and Boots took off with that dang spider. Where he put it, I have no idea. But he does eat them when he finally kills them - yukkkkkkk

E. | 653 comments In the last few months one of my dogs has brought from the back yard into the house a chicken, a opossum and a mouse. (A opossum or AN opossum..?) I'm not afraid of any of those but there was a creep factor when after I dragged the (presumed murdered) opossum back out to the yard it jumped up and trotted off, hardly ruffled.
We now have a check point before re-entry from the back yard.

Arachnophobia - my son has it. He won't go anywhere near a spider. If there's a spider in the bathroom he asks me to get rid of it before he'll take a shower. My husband used to tease him but I made him stop as it's a real condition and shouldn't be teased.

Arachnophobia.

Heather: Sounds like your son would freak out over the spider fight in one of the HOBBIT movies. Or any scene involving Shelob in THE TWO TOWERS.

The spider in Harry Potter was MASSIVE!

message 7516: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I think just about everybody suffers from Arachnophobia at some degree.

**a little grammar tip** if the noun begins with a vowel, use "an" before it, as in "an opossum, or an egg". If it begins with a consonant, use "a", as in "a bell, or a car". Just thought I throw that in...:)

Thank you Heather and Amber for supplying the name of the phobia. My mind went blank. @Amber I can't watch a movie with spiders in it without hyperventilating. I also get all clammy too.

The problem with opossum is that we say 'possum. I believe this would be correct. It was a 'possum.

Even when you know the spiders are just SFX?

Heather: They do. Fake special effects ones, though. DESOLATION OF SMAUG: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJHPt... I apologize for the el sucko quality.

Old Fat Spider, Glenn Yarbrough from the soundtrack of the Rankin/Bass version of the Hobbit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKdsB...

Shelob's Lair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gVBV...

Couldn't find the scene from the 1977 Rankin/Bass version of THE HOBBIT where Bilbo uses Sting to kill the spiders, though, Heather.

message 7522: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Brenda, that is so right. I know we say possum here in the US south, so it would be "a possum". I hardly hear "Opossum".

message 7523: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2387 comments I seem to recall that there was a very, very large spider in the play, The Hobbit, which my high school staged my senior year. My twin brother, who is quite small for a guy (maybe 5'3 at the most) was a spider, and he got to zip line in across the audience to the stage...BTW, there was a movie called "Arachnophobia" maybe 20 (?) years ago...

I cover my eyes whenever there are snake scenes in movies, books, TV. If someone talks about them, it's "la-la-la." Seriously DO. NOT. LIKE. THEM. I'd look up the term for that phobia but I'm afraid to.

Groovy Lee Thank you for that, Amber

I have an old collection of Godzilla movies in VHS form and never got around to updating them. I am a BIG fan of all the old Godzilla movies. And I'm going to buy the ones on the list you posted. It made me miss watching them with my daughter. (Just like we watch the Kung fu movies together:)

I don't like the newer ones though, with Matthew Broderick, and I think there's another one. But thanks again...

Yes, there was one from 2014. And here's the Honest Trailer for GODZILLA 2014: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOyVy...

Groovy Lee That Honest Trailer was soooo funny, and so to the point! I remember that one, we went to see it. It was a bit disappointing. They focused more on the boring people than Godzilla, but it was still better than the last one--thanks, Amber!

I'm off to buy all the old classics:)

Who were the 3 that didn't vote for him? He was a good player. Clean too, in the midst of the doping season.

McGuire didn't make it on this last chance to be inducted - good!

Brenda | 2434 comments I posted this in another thread, but thought it would get more answers here.

I was asked how many new-to-me authors I had read in 2015. I reviewed my Read shelf and came up with 54.

This is what I'd like to know. Is 54 a lot? I have nothing to compare it to.

I read 172 books last year Brenda, and just under half were by new to me authors.....

message 7547: by Brenda (new)

I had several new ones also where I read more than one of their books. Isn't exciting finding so many great new authors, ones that you want to read more of!

message 7549: by Brenda (new)

I really got sidetracked in 2015, lol. I read 182 books and 126 of them were new authors to me.

I didn't check the debuts but I know some of them were. I would guess about 15.
