Sarah | 3915 comments 2016 Group Bookshelf Reading Calendar/Planning

For those of you haven’t participated, the purpose of this thread is to coordinate and facilitate group reads from our group's Bookshelf, readings that are separate from the monthly choices.

A quick synopsis: in 2014, a number of us posted our reading goals for the year and we realized that there was a lot of overlap in the books that we all wanted to read for the year. We thought that it might be fun to coordinate reading them together, so a group reading thread was created. In 2015 the format was streamlined by placing and keeping an updated calendar and a listing of the old discussion threads for each book on top. So we now enter 2016, year three for the “2016 Group Bookshelf Reading Calendar/Planning”

This list has been selected based on “wish lists” submitted at the end of 2015 by those interested. These are all books from the club’s bookshelf that the club has read before, and can be viewed here: Bookshelf. A timeline calendar has been created based on common interests, and we generally have one or two books discussed each month. Again, these books are separate from and in addition to the ongoing monthly club selections.

The discussions usually get going by the 15th of the month, allowing time for folks to read the regular monthly choices if they so choose. Discussion takes place in the old discussion threads, which will be posted on the top and which we will try to keep up to date.

With all of that said, this is an "unofficial" official timeline, and if people end up having conflicts as the year progresses, or new people join, or whatever, please feel free to make friendly amendments, or add new book proposals to the ongoing discussion.

And remember, the main purpose here is to have fun.

If there is enough interest, we can certainly discuss any of the 2015 choices again.

Michael | 1303 comments Great thread, Sarah! It is quite exhilirating to see things running "all by themselves" ha ha. I might post a few of my own choices in a bit...

message 13: by Maarit (last edited Dec 05, 2015 09:32AM) (new)

Maarit | 136 comments Here's my wishlist, though I'm pretty flexible in my choices anyways and tend usually to change my mind multiple times before finally choosing what I will really read.

1. Assassin's Apprentice (own)
2. The Windup Girl (own)
3. Ready Player One (own)
4. Prince of Thorns (own)
5. The Shadow of the Torturer (own)
6. Embassytown (own)
7. Fuzzy Nation (own)
8. Ancillary Justice (own)
9. The Martian (own) (possibly the one and only person who hasn't read this yet)
10. The Quantum Thief (own)
11. Guards! Guards! (own)
12. Dragonflight (own)
13. The Day of the Triffids (own)
14. The Long Earth (must loan/buy)

And possibly these, too, if I don't have time for them this year:
15. The Dispossessed (must loan/buy)
16. Anansi Boys (must loan/buy)

I marked the books I own and the ones I have to loan, but that's just for me to remember.

Sarah | 3915 comments That's such a lovely list :)

message 24: by Michael (new)

Michael | 1303 comments Sarah wrote: "*Gasp* is this payback for my behavior last year?! ;)"

It does seem curious that my list is 31 this year and was 29 last year. Did I actually get any reading done last year?? Is this what they call "progress"??

I promise not to change it this time if that helps.

message 25: by Michael (new)

Michael | 1303 comments And notice that my list is alphabetized! Which greatly assists tallying, IIRC.

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments You can change it all you want, I really don't mind. You definitely got some reading done last year. You must have found more tempting wonders. :) My reading list certainly grows year by year.

message 27: by Michael (new)

Michael | 1303 comments Edwin wrote: "For those of you tracking, here is the updated tally of books with 3 or more votes:..."

Great work, Edwin!

And 25% are female authors, for those tracking such things, which I think approximately matches our bookshelf.

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Yeah, scrolling up and down can get crazy!

message 29: by Michael (new)

Michael | 1303 comments I noticed on the January 2016 SciFi Nomination Thread, Hank observed we will add our 200th book to the bookshelf in January. Not only does this indicate more reading options for everyone, it will be the first time you cannot view the whole bookshelf on one page. I for one will be very sad about that aspect of the milestone!

message 30: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 79 comments wow Michael I could have put a lot more books on my list but I was trying to limit it. Lol maybe I shouldn't have. Actually l just got tired of linking them.

message 31: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 375 comments I’m in this group since April and therefore missed some books this year and need to catch up. I usually don’t plan too far ahead and read mostly what I feel like reading, but I’d like to be reading these in the near future and I could use some extra motivation at least for some.

Cold Magic
Gardens of the Moon
Kushiel's Dart
His Majesty's Dragon
The Dragon's Path
The Warded Man
The Black Prism
Wool Omnibus
Storm Front
Flowers for Algernon
Ancillary Justice
Ancillary Sword
Island in the Sea of Time
Under Heaven
Leviathan Wakes
Homeland

Melanie | 1602 comments Mod
My wish list is as follows; however, I plan on joining in with which ever books I have not yet read. I generally don't read books twice, and with so many books out there to be read, I find I don't have time for re-reads.

1. Altered Carbon
2. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
3. Dragonflight
4. Dune
5. Flowers for Algernon
6. Furies of Calderon
7. The Final Empire
8. The Eye of the World
9. The Golem and the Jinni
10. The Martian
11. The Name of the Wind

Sarah | 3915 comments Gosh, we've only got 130 nominees. Aren't there like 67 missing?

message 37: by Michael (last edited Nov 17, 2015 05:55AM) (new)

Michael | 1303 comments Ruth wrote: "wow Michael I could have put a lot more books on my list but I was trying to limit it. Lol maybe I shouldn't have. Actually l just got tired of linking them."

lol. It's a tough call. If everyone puts every book they could possibly read out there, it becomes harder to tally, but you get a lot more overlap and more chance for discussions. If you only put the ones on your "wish list", then you are more motivated to actually join the discussions, but there are fewer overlaps and fewer discussions. It seems like everyone does what is best for them and that's why it works best as an interactive process, IMHO.

Hopefully I am not putting too much stress on Edwin and Sarah by suggesting that you can always add more votes if you want. It is true that it makes it a little harder for those tallying, but if it makes you feel better, Sarah was one of the ones I remember last year who ended up adding a lot more votes once the list started forming and saw more books they wanted to read... :p

Great job, Sarah! The names are a lot of work, I know!!

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I'm behaving myself this year, Michael! I can't even tell you how many of these I want to add. I tried to limit myself t to the ones that I'm fully committed to reading. I was terrible last year.

So yes, feel free to list anything you're willing to read. Edwin and I will survive the tallying process :) I'm quite excited about the response so far.

message 41: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Michael, I started to do this in Excel, like any sane person, but I don't have the full program and there were too many things I couldn't do. Edwin has the lovely Excel spreadsheet and I'm reduced to listing names in Word ;) It's working at least.

message 42: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) | 781 comments I have been tempted to add some. But, I decided that I can always just join in the read whether it was on my list or not. :)

message 43: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments That's my plan too :)

message 44: by Maarit (last edited Nov 17, 2015 06:46AM) (new)

Maarit | 136 comments I edited my post slightly to reflect the books I really must read and which I can get my hands to easily, as I still have the problem of living in non-English speaking country and I don't want to buy all the books to myself even if I can find most of them (I don't read from Kindle, I've tried, but it's not my style and still, don't want to buy all of the books).

EDIT: I've also decided to join in the read even if it's not on my list as long as I can get the book somewhere relatively easy and the book itself interests me :).

message 45: by Edwin (new)

Edwin Priest | 718 comments Valerie wrote: "I have been tempted to add some. But, I decided that I can always just join in the read whether it was on my list or not. :)"

Yup, me too.

message 46: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (ladycello) I'll also just join in if I like the synopsis of the book more than the main reads for the month, even if it's not on my list above. I had just made my list to include ones I own that were on my personal list, but I'm not opposed to joining in if say Promise of Blood is chosen. I'm lucky to have a very big library system with an awesome loan network.

By the way, I love picking up my phone and seeing so many notifications. I love seeing active threads :)

Justine (justine_ao) | 111 comments Maarit...just wanted to reassure you that you aren't the only person left who hasn't read The Martian. *raises hand sheepishly*

message 49: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments Ha! Here are my votes with several of the missing books :) I think I only have one that is already voted for. I think I am getting to the less read/voted for books.

1. The Algebraist
2. The Lions of Al-Rassan
3. A Canticle for Leibowitz
4. Little, Big
5. Zodiac
6.A Night in the Lonesome October
7.War for the Oaks
8.The Anubis Gates
9.When Gravity Fails
10.The Silent Tower
11.Those Who Hunt the Night
12.The Suicide Collectors

Cold Magic looks pretty romancey to me but if the group votes for it, I would probably read it.

message 50: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments Julia has some books posted in the 2015 thread, if she doesn't notice by the end of the day, I can post them here.
