Introduce Yourself - Part I
Rick wrote: "Hey Bookish, nice to meet you. I’m new to the group as well. I posted an intro a few days ago.I have no problems with labels (genres) I read just about anything - I love horror, Sci-fi, Fantasy, ..."
Hi Rick, I agree with you on Dune. Speaking of Dune, I noticed that Kevin J. Anderson was selling the latest paperback of short stores at a convention. I need to pick up a copy of Tales of Dune at some point soon.
I've been in Goodreads for a couple of years now, but it's only been lately I've started joining into groups and participating into discussions. Space Opera is my the subgenre of science fiction, I can't believe I haven't joined this group sooner... So, here's me:
Name: Maria
Favorite Books and Authors: Arthur C. Clarke, Alastair Reynolds, John Scalzi... some fav books: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood's End, Tomorrow's Worlds, Hyperion, Lost Fleet -series, Old Man's War, Blindsight, The Three-Body Problem -trilogy
Favorite Genres: In addition to scifi, I also enjoy fantasy and Asian literature
Favorite TV shows: Stargate SG-1 + Atlantis (the number 1 series for me, INDEED!), Star Trek (Next Generation, DS9, Enterprise), Firefly, BSG, Fringe, Castle, Empress in the Palace (Wooo my favorite Chinese historial drama! Don't be fooled by Netflix 6 episodes, it's actually 76 episodes long)
Favorite Movies: The Fifth Element, The Matrix, original Star Wars -trilogy, LOTR -trilogy, Chinese wuxia films
Favorite Food: Sushi!
Hobbies: Video gaming (especially JRPGs and strategy), nature (gardening, hiking, photographing)
C. John wrote: "I have to ask, what is a Chinese wuxia film?"Hmm, it's difficult to describe one but I'll try: The setting is usually historical China. The protagonist is a martial artist or swordsman of sorts. The story features highly exaggerated battles between the hero and his/her enemies, usually both parties having some superhuman abilities. You know, flying slow-mo through the air :). Both visual and sound are usually stunning in these movies.
Examples of wuxia films: Hero, House of the Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower
I am an author of science thrillers. Joined the group to see what they love to read. And hope to find some insight into readers of military science fiction. Having said that, I would love your opinions on the use of profanity by such characters as navy seals, and Russian thugs. I do not want to offend my readers and would like to know if this kind of dialog makes the characters more or less 'real'/believable.

I read space opera and have no interesting in reading a book full of profanity. The more the strong profanity, the lower my rating tends to be.
Hello, the group!I've been on Goodreads for a few years now, but only just recently started joining group. My primary interest is science fiction, with fantasy a distant second. I have no interest in anything else, especially non-fiction. Life is too short to slog through that which you do not like, just for the sake of saying you read it or because some talking head on TV finds it "important". Bah...I read for fun. I read to escape the daily grind. The last thing I want to read at home is some management theory or self-help book. Bah!
Name: Patrick
Favorite Books: Pretty much everything by Alastair Reynolds (not so much Revenger though)
Favorite Genres: Sci-fi (Space Opera, Hard Sci-fi)
Favorite TV shows: I don't watch much TV, but right now I am fascinated by shows on Scinece Channel like What on Earth, The Planets and Beyond, How the Universe Works, etc)
Favorite Movies: Star Wars
Favorite Food: Asian - Asia 9 Lo Mein from Asia Nine in DC is my go-to lunch selection; fresh, authentic ramen from actual Japanese ramen restaurants; Pho; almost everything....except sushi.
Day Job: Boss of smart people
Hobbies: Reading, cars, video/photo editing, dogs, and apparently yard work
Other: I didn't start reading for pleasure until I was in my mid-40s. I'm 51 now, so I have a lot of catching up to do. My introduction to science fiction writing, since I took up reading for fun, was Asimov's Foundation. I subsequently read everything (ficton) by Asimov.
Hate to say it, E.C., because I generally like Niven, but I did not like Mote. I think I gave it 2 stars.

Thank you! :)Teresa wrote: "Welcome Tim, from another software dev!"
What kind of software? I do various web-apps, lots of SQL, and other BI-related things
I used to do multiplayer online games (mostly the client server communication and server side code) but for the past several years I’ve been doing learning simulations. Some 3D, some 2D, mostly a mixture. A few of the projects had client server communication but most are stand-alone. We are trying to get our framework to work with WebGL now.

Hello everyone! I'm not new, and I never really went away after posting my introduction, just mostly lurking. I haven't had time to do much posting while I had to re-edit (ahem) my first and second scifi books. But the first is reissued and the second is nearing publication so I'm hoping to be much more active than I have been.Definitely looking forward to reading this month's BOTM, and caught up with Becky Chambers' magnificent series last month, thanks to the BOTM prompt.
Look forward to chatting with you elsewhere in the group.
Hi everyone!I'm new to the group so I just wanted to say hello!
My name is Damien and I'm a Planning Analyst from Dublin, Ireland.

Hello! I'm Richard H. Stephens, epic fantasy author from Ontario Canada. Finally, after 36 years, I have found time to write and have published the first story I started at a young age! Two years ago I quit my job as a member of our local police force and took back control of what is important to me and that is my passion for writing.
I have published 4 books all Epic Fantasy. I have another series coming out this year. I love to read fantasy and such a fan of Tolkien and Brooks! If you are interested, here is my website for more info about me. www.richardhstephens.com
Welcome, Richard, if you want to discuss Space Opera. This isn’t the right place for epic fantasy.
Good morning,I'm Jared Austin. I actually joined the group a while back, but never introduced myself. Now I'm trying to be a little more active, so here's a little more about me.

Favorite Books: My favorite book is the Stolen Child by Keith Donohue.

As for favorite scifi, these days I find I have a lot more time for audiobooks than sitting down to read. I have listened to both of Andy Weir's books, enjoyed them thoroughly, and especially loved both narrators (The Martain - R.C. Bray; Artemis - Rosario Dawson).
I also love to listen to Wil Wheaton-narrated books (Lock In and Head On by John Scalzi, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline).
Also, I've recently gotten into Kristine Kathryn Rusch's Diving Universe, though I've only read a couple books in this series so far.
Favorite Genres: I read all over the place. Fantasy, Scifi, YA Fantasy and Scifi, Thriller, Mystery, others depending on what catches my interest at a particular moment.
Favorite TV shows: Most anything by Joss Whedon.
Hobbies: video games, published author, raising my two kids (ok, maybe this is a little more than a hobby. They keep me busy, so everything else kind of fits in around that as I can).
If you have questions, let me know.

Is there a general topic/forum where I can ask some questions ?
I'm kind of lost with the group pages...
Florin, if the question involves Space Opera, start a thread in Reader Discussion. See
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
If the question is about how this group works, start a thread in Welcome Wagon
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
There are lots of other places to post but one of those will be appropriate most likely, particularly since you didn’t mention being an author.

I was a math and physics double major in college, then switched to computer science for grad school.

I agree on Babylon 5 with the caveat that the story was good for 5 seasons, AS IT WAS INTENDED TO BE. It's always been my favorite example of why you don't push a story past its arc. (Or ..."
I agree that JMS had a story planed out for B5. But it's a huge universe and there are always other stories to tell. Just not more that were specifically about the last of the Babylon stations.
