Introduce Yourself - Part I
Hello!I'm new here, slowly trying to get more into the social aspect of Goodreads and figured a couple book clubs or groups (that in turn can help me expand my reading horizons) wouldn't hurt. As for me:
Name: I'm Tizzy. Nice to meet y'all.
Favorite Books: Fantasy and comedy go a long way with me. Discworld is always a hit. It might be a bit cliched these days, but Harry Potter novels (the original 7, not the fanfic that came afterwards) never fail, and Stephen King delivers quite often for me. On a closer note to this group, I've recently been reading through the The Expanse series, loved Ender's Game , consider The City and the Stars to be a classic, should finally get to reading Dune one of these days, and think maybe I should reread Hyperion , as I have very good memories of that book for some reason even when I recall it didn't do it for me.
Favorite Genres: Fantasy, Sci-fi, Comedy, YA.
Favorite TV shows: Currently, The Handmaid's Tale. The TV Adaptation of American Gods last year was amazing, too, and I'm patiently waiting for the last season of House of Cards.
Favorite Movies: A bunch, though off the top of my head Donnie Darko, Black Swan, and Requiem for a Dream.
Favorite Food: Sushi.
Day Job: I'm a web developer and author. Day job is web development, tho.
Hobbies: Reading. Video games. Learning languages (speak three, going for fourth). Cooking, particularly sweet stuff.
Other: I'm a goodreads author. Also, I tend to bite and shouldn't be fed past midnight.
Hi.Uhm...I always suck at these things, mostly because I hate talking about myself. Anywho...
Name: Caird...Logan Caird *cue bond theme song*
Favorite
Favorite Genres: Sci-fi, fantasy, and a blend of the two
Favorite TV shows: That's a rolling list. At the moment I'm rewatching NCIS and Star Trek Voyager but I bounce around watching all kinds of stuff from the various superhero TV shows to any good sci-fi show I can find to the way too rare good fantasy show.
Favorite Movies: Right now? Deadpool 2
Favorite Food: Obviously, the most versatile food in existence. The burrito. There's little that could not be improved by wrapping it in a tortilla.
Day Job: I fix x-ray machines and do tech support for a living. It's equal parts interesting and frustrating.
Hobbies: Reading, Writing, and Rithmetic. I like to read books. A lot. At 63 so far this year. When not doing that I write stuff. Maybe I'll be good at it someday. I also like tabletop games (Shout out to The Strange RPG) but only get to do that every couple weeks.
Other: I am a Goodreads author, but only because I wrote a fanfic short story and the author included it in their fan's anthology. I do like to write and would like to do it professionally someday but I have no idea if that's going to become a reality.
Howdy all. I'm Mary.Favorite Books: Outlander, Hero and the Crown. Vorkosigian Saga,
Favorite Genres: SF, some fantasy, time travel
Favorite TV shows: Buffy, Once Upon a Time.
Favorite Movies: All the Marvel, Star Wars
Favorite Food: Pizza
Day Job: Stay at Home Parent
Hobbies: sewing, cosplay, writing, medieval reenactment (SCA), keeping my children from killing each other
Name: Varun SayalFavorite Books: The day of the jackal, Dr. Who novels, Issac Asimov Books
Favorite Genres: Science Fiction
Favorite TV shows: Altered Carbon, Stargate SG1, Battlestar Galactica
Favorite Movies: Inception, Minority Report

Other: Huge fan of all of sci-fi. Very recently I gave birth to a book, so now I am a new author too.
Teresa wrote: "Welcome Varun!"Thanka a lot Teresa, I am quite new to GoodReads, any suggestions for me on how can I get started?
It depends on what you want to do. Promote your own book? See the Self-Promotion section of our discussions. Discuss books with the group? We have four nomination threads going at the moment for books to discuss in August, and years worth of books we have already discussed that you could add comments to. Or just use Goodreads to keep track of the books you have read and how much you liked them.

Hello all,My name is Jim. I was born in 1969 and my day job is working for USPS. For all intents and purposes I've been off Goodreads for about the last four years. During that time I was writing a science fiction trilogy. The third and final book was just published this last weekend. I didn't read any books during that time as I didn't want to be influenced by other authors. The next book I read will be The Martian by Andy Weir who also was kind enough to chat with me briefly on Facebook. If anyone has any fantastic marketing ideas please let me know! Happy reading!
E.C. wrote: "Welcome Jim. You are going to love The Martian. I really enjoyed the can-do attitude of the main character. And the science is (mostly) correct as well, if you prefer plausible/hard scifi."Thanks E.C. Looking forward to it!

When comes to books and read just about anything (currently on a crime drama kick). I especially like stories that span long periods of time - I think that’s why I like Dune series so much, it’s one of the few stories that I reread and usually find something new every time. I even enjoy the prequels that Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson have written. For me to truly love a book it has to effect my emotions - I need to feel the characters and get swept up their emotions. I want to laugh out loud, get excited during intense scenes, check under the bed, look in closets, and even cry. Those are good books, and I reread them again and again.
Welcome, Rick. I also loved Dune, but the other Dune books, not so much.
There are some geocachers in another group I belong to, Fans of Maps. You might check it out, but it's not really very active.

Hi all, I've heard the term 'Space Opera' sort of bandied about but I didn't really pay it much attention until coming across this group yesterday
(I'm not a fan of genre labels through I appreciate the convenience etc). As it turns out a lot of the movies, tv shows, and books I like would be considered space operas though I haven't read as much as I've watched. I enjoy fantasy a lot more than horror, and read pretty widely outside genre too.
All time favorites: Battlestar Galactica, The Expanse, Star Trek (Voyager, Enterprise, and DS9), Babylon 5, Star Wars.
I've just finished watching the Expanse and wow! Altered Carbon was pretty good too.
Welcome Bookish. If you stick around, you'll see we're pretty flexible about labels in this group.
Betsy wrote: "Welcome Bookish. If you stick around, you'll see we're pretty flexible about labels in this group."Allowing that flexibility is important to me. I had to abide by some very narrow genre definitions when I worked in bookstore but I don't have to do it now. I enjoy groups that allow for flexible definition of genre because it leads to more discussion, more books to learn about and more books tbr.
Hey Bookish, nice to meet you. I’m new to the group as well. I posted an intro a few days ago.I have no problems with labels (genres) I read just about anything - I love horror, Sci-fi, Fantasy, history, literature, mysteries - I just love to read. I don’t read as much as Teresa (one of the admins of the group) but I try to read 30-40 books a year.
What I like about Space Opera is the large scope of the story. I think Dune is the best example of such a story, because it covers economics, culture, geography, genealogy, as well as space travel - every time I read it I get something new. For contemporary Space Opera I love the Expanse! To me it is the epitome of human kind in our solar system as we expand.
Looking forward to more discussions in the future.
-Rick
Thanks Betsy! Funny you should say that because I'm not much of a group person but talking about this stuff should be fun.

Hey Rick, nice to meet you too! I'm the same way, I read pretty widely and I go by what I feel so a lot of the time its hard to keep track in terms of 'where' I find myself.
I loved Dune as a kid! I tried rewatching it last year but my copy is terrible now and I didn't get very far. I'm long overdue for a new one. I just found the Expanse thread :) https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... Love the show!! Just amazed really. I miss it a lot. Trying to find something else to watch and I'm coming up way short ...
I'm hoping to get into the books soon.

Definitely! I was in a history group for a very short while that was pretty regulated. It felt very stifling.
Hello, my name is Duane, and I am a space opera reader.I usually enjoy a space opera novel better than any other sort of SF, but that's not always true.
Recent Favorites:
Vatta's War series by Elizabeth Moon
The Expanse by James S.A. Corey
Old Man's War books by John Scalzi
Forever War novels by Haldeman
I read through the English translations of the Perry Rhodan series published by Ace when I was a younger fellow. I read and enjoyed the LEMURIA mini-series published as ebooks in 2015.
Occasionally I get a hankering for a return to the sprawling epic of Perry Rhodan, but I don't think we'll be seeing a return of the series to English any time soon.
Can anyone recommend a "If you like Perry Rhodan, you'll like . . . " series?
Thanks!
Duane
Duane,I looked at the Amazon list of other titles bought by those who bought Lemuria. Of those, I can recommend these two very highly:
1. The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester
2. Star Trek: Vanguard series (starts with Harbinger by David Mack)
You might also look at the publishers Baen and Daw, who publish a lot of military sci-fi and space opera series.
HI, my name is Tom and I love SF in all it's forms. I particularly like Space Opera because of the grand scale. Exploration and big mysteries is space are a favorite of mine. Star Trek is my favorite thing of all time! I will say that that IMO however, Babylon 5 is the best story told on TV.
Hey Tom!I agree on Babylon 5 with the caveat that the story was good for 5 seasons, AS IT WAS INTENDED TO BE. It's always been my favorite example of why you don't push a story past its arc. (Or if you do, then the money better be worth it.) ;-)

ETA: I still want the book bag!
Agree on Babylon 5. I wanted a book bag with "be somewhere else" on it. It's hard to know where the next story arc would have gone because we saw so little but it looked more dystopian than space opera to me.
