Hi! I'm Emma!My favorite books are Terry Pratchett's "The Color of Magic," "Feet of Clay," and "Night Watch" (among most anything by Pratchett), lots of stuff by Stephen King but especially "Pet Semetary" and "Needful Things," and Jeff VanderMeer's "Annihilation" and "City of Saints and Madmen."
My favorite genres are fantasy and horror, but I'll read pretty much anything and some of the works I’ve loved the most are murder mysteries (police procedural or no, often forensics-focused), classical British literature (think "Pride and Prejudice”), and romance (usually fantasy/scifi/paranormal). I especially love snark and wit (hence my love of Pratchett). But I just finished a space opera by Becky Chambers called "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.” This is also the latest in my quest to find good, "hard" scifi by female authors. I feel like there's a lack of scifi by female authors on the market, and I'm positive it's not because women don't write this kind of stuff. I'm on the hunt and open to recommendations!
My tv taste runs to fantasy, scifi, and crime dramas, too. I’m not generally a fan of horror in film or tv (I like if horror is used to tell a story, but not if it’s gratuitous, and I /loathe/ jump-scares).
I tutor at the college level in biology, chemistry, and math. My degree is in biology and I plan to start a PhD program in parasitology and immunology in the near[ish] future (yes, that means I LOVE anything, including any scifi, having to do with parasites). I love learning new things and figuring out puzzles, and I am one of those people that will read the long drawn-out space epic and enjoy the intergalactic, perhaps inter-species politics and the obscure scientific explanation of a scifi fuel source in addition to the rogueish exploits of a small crew struggling to stay under the nigh-omnipotent corporation’s radar. (It also means I had a long, drawn out not-quite-argument with my friend about Chris Pine's survival in the "Star Trek: Into Darkness")
I haven’t been reading as much as I’d like to, mostly because I’m currently obsessed with podcasts (and there’s not enough time to do everything). I, myself, do not podcast but I listen to many shows, and most of my favorites are actual-plays and audio dramas. Actual-play podcasts are recordings of people playing table-top role-playing games (TTRPGs); I enjoy table-top gaming a lot (I’ve mostly played Dungeons & Dragons) and I like to hear other peoples’ dynamics at the table and the wacky stories they come up with. Most of the audio dramas (these can be scripted or improvised) have fantasy or scifi storylines, and two of my current favorites are “Mission to Zyxx” and “The Strange Case of Starship Iris,” both space-opera-type stories set on ships with colorful crews.

Hello, Everyone. I am Taseen from Dhaka, Bangladesh.My Sci-Fi reading started with Sci-Fi novel written by local writers in our mother language Bangla in my primary school days. After that I began reading Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov at the suggestion of by high school English teacher. I have read quiet a few Sci-Fi novels since. I am currently working my way through the classics in Sci-Fi and Fantasy.
I have read a few and I would like to read more. I love to read and discuss my Sci-Fi and Fantasy readings with fellow enthusiasts and this group is just the kind of group I'm looking for to feed my Sci-Fi addiction and learn more about the genre.
I must confess, I am a bit of an escapist and Sci-Fi and Fantasy have always been my refuge. Looking forward to great conversations! In my day job I'm an IT professional working in the banking industry; and Sci-Fi had a quiet a lot to do with my choice to study and work in technology related fields.

Hey everyone,I love science fiction. I've found that I really enjoy stories that just move through things quickly and keep my interest. While characters are wicked important, I still want the story to move along, as in the format of Harry Harrison and Isaac Asimov (well some).

“Who am I? I am Spiderman.”Well, not really, but this should tell you all you need to know about me and my writing style.
I’m a huge Star Trek AND Star Wars fan, which shows since my novel is loaded with pop culture references. If you are a sci-fi fan (I assume that you are, otherwise what are you doing here?) you will enjoy them tremendously. I even went full Deadpool in my first draft and broke the fourth wall multiple times, until my editor told it was distracting and kept taking her out of the moment. Shame. Those fourth-wall breaks were hilarious. Still, I can guarantee a few laugh-out-loud moments. Case in point: The “good” aliens in my novel are a race of pranksters, whose main goal in life is pulling other people’s legs (They have four legs, hence the slight change in the idiom). My favorite author is Jim Butcher (The Dresden Files), which is probably how I ended up writing in a first-person POV with the same light-hearted, funny tone as he does. The fact that my MC’s name is Jim is purely coincidental though.
I am a university/college level English teacher, and including Canada, I have lived and worked in five different countries. I have met people from all around the world. Plus, my parents are from a different background, and so is my wife. As a result, diversity has become a major theme in my novel. My characters look like the bridge crew from Star Trek. One of my female characters even impersonated Uhura once, albeit posthumously.

The Sculpted Ship by K.M. O'brien is a great space opera type book. It's the only book by the author, but very, very nicely done. (The audiobook is also really good. I highly recommend it.)
Perilous Waif might be too far for you. It's a great female led story (and just a great story), but there are some big fights towards the end. Like "The Sculpted Ship", the author leaves some great hints of other story lines that I really want to be able to read!
