That's hilarious, I used to work with Nintendo of Canada and had to call Nintendo of America for somethings and they couldn't pronounce Nanaimo or certain other areas either! It was very funny.

Matt (imagination_hunter7) | 24 comments Hi, my real name is Matt, and no, I don't look like the "person" in the profile pic.......though not quite far off. I'm relatively new here at Goodreads, and hoping to become a trusted reviewer of all things sci-fi and fantasy. I've read quite a lot of both genres... now all I have to do is slowly write reviews for each one.

Hi Betsy. Is there a separate thread to write and read reviews? I might want to write some in the future and post them.

Not really. There is one thread asking what you're reading right now. You can post reviews there or anywhere else we talk about books, which is almost everywhere.

Jessie (jessoftheweirding) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Jessie Caldwell. My favorite books are too many to name, but some standouts are the Honor Harrington series, Herris Serrano series, the Dune, the Deed of Paksenarrion, the Dresden Files, and the Tortall series. I usually read fantasy and sci-fi for both adults and YA, but I'm always open for new ideas.

For TV and movies I, again, like Sci-fi/fantasy like Once Upon a Time, Firefly, Dr. Who, Star Trek/Gate/Wars, but I also love crime shows like NCIS, Criminal Minds, and Law and Order. I also love Constantine, V for Vendetta, etc. Oh and superhero movies, especially Marvel. Team Cap! :)

My favorite food is pizza, sushi, ice cream, steak and potatoes, and fresh crusty bread.

During the day I work in a library, and will be getting my MLIS in a few years. Off hours I feel like I have hobby ADD because I never know which to pick so I wind up on Reddit. I read, watch movies/tv, listen to music. I also play video games and am learning to crochet.

That's me in a nutshell! Nice ta'meet'cha!

message 1468: by Ho'oki (new)

Ho'oki (sojopo) | 1 comments Hello all, Steve P. here, from Detroit, MI area. I love space opera, but hate committing to a series only to learn 500 pages in that it wasn't worth it. Hoping to glean some insight into my next vicarious space adventure.

Just finished Babylon's Ashes (Expanse series - anyone have an opinion of this latest installment?) and pretty much anything by Iaian M. Banks is on my list. The culture series in particular is brilliant writing, IMHO.

I've been reading SO since I was 12 but don't ask me to list them all here. The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell comes to mind as enjoyable, though it seems like that jumped the shark a bit, and I've quit.

The entire Ender series, including most recently the Formic War series from Card as well.

Looking forward to the comments and recommendations! Cheers.

Zad Hi everyone,

Name: Adam, but my friends call me Zad

Favorite books: Everything from Iain M. Banks and Alastair Reynolds but nowdays I'm really into military sci-fi too, like the Honor Harrington series or Marko Kloos' Frontlines series which reminds me a little of Elliot Kay's Poor Man's Fight.

Favorite genres: space opera, military sci-fi, books about modern science

Favorite TV shows: The Stargate series and Battlestar Galactica comes to mind, however (despite the CGI) I really loved Babylon 5 too.

Favorite food: steak :D nothing is better than a big juicy steak

Day job: mechanical engineer

Hobbies: I love to fool around in the kitchen.

Other: I really enjoy good quality, sci-fi themed anime like, Ghost in the Shell, Knights of Sidonia, etc. My all time favorite is BubbleGum Crisis which is cyberpunk but has that 80's vibe.

What my favorite space operas are, is a question I couldn't even start to answer. Lately I've been more fantasy than anything else, and I hope this group can help me break out of that rut a bit more. I look forward to getting to know you all and experience great stories with you

message 1479: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie | 303 comments I introduced myself a year ago. With all the new comments on tv shows and books, I wanted to comment. If this isn't the right place Anna, just move me.

I cancelled dish a year ago and haven't bothered to sign up for a replacement for TV, so I stream Netflix and Amazon Prime. I was surprised by how many Sci FI series I missed. The whole work thing, 2 kids, and I read a lot.

I watched Odyssey 5 last month and was disappointed that they didn't finish the story! Other shows I have to wait until most recent seasons are up, but I liked Being human too. I rewatched Lost on binge fashion which was fun. I am surprised that current series are often only a season behind. When I am not watching Sci Fi, I watch lawyer, police investigation types like Law & Order, Suits, Criminal Intent, NCIS Covert Affairs, Quantico. I am the person who has shelves of DVDs too - Babylon 5, Fringe, Stargate and Atlantis, Andromeda, Firefly, Star Trek, Voyager, DS9, Sanctuary, and so on.

I own every Star trek original series book since the 70s and every Voyager book, some Star Wars, Stargate. Quantum Leap, and all the B5 books. 462 books on my kindle that I have read and 4 bookcases with 5 three foot long shelves on each, all science fiction. I have read them all but since i have been collecting them since the 70s, I don't remember them all. (I had more bit my daughter stole some of my collections that she felt she liked more than I did.) also have 204 eBooks and 20 printed books I haven't read yet. But every time I come into Goodreads to check threads I find people talking about books that I have to add to my want to read list. I could never write a book. But I am grateful to all of you who do and to eBooks making books an easier resource.

I have been on disability for the past 2 plus years. I am syarting to think that my reading goal should be how many books I can limit myself to. Lol

Tom | 1 comments Hello all - hoping my comment here revives this group. I'm Tom and I'm a 'space nut.' Like many here (I assume), Star Wars changed my life when I first glimpsed it at, oh, age six. I was off to the races, reading any and all space opera sci fi I could get my hands on. I particularly enjoy Ben Bova's Rock Rats series and David Brin's Earth. Fav TV show is Firefly, by far. As a day job I work in the aerospace industry working with new commercial space companies. Looking forward to chatting!

message 1481: by Tim (last edited Feb 08, 2017 05:51AM) (new)

Tim (tpc5) | 13 comments Oh dear, I am now going to upset people, my apologies in advance.

This movie was so full of problems I couldn't bear to watch it more than twice, and the second time only to confirm that I really had seen something so poor the first time. Here are just two examples.

1. An intercontinental ballistic missile launches from a hole in the middle of the camp with everyone present just standing around the hole watching. Now I'm no expert, but I would have thought 5 miles away would have still been too close for anyone to survive the experience.

2. At the end, Geordie and Data reverse engineer the calculations the Borg had used to jump to the past, this so the Enterprise could just pop back to its present time. Wow, the guys have now just invented time travel for the whole Federation. How cool was that.

There is so much more wrong with this film that I would suggest it's marked down to the 1 to 2 star rating the Final Frontier obtained.

Now, I get most sci-fi films don't stand up to too much scrutiny, but this is one of the worst. Live long and all that.

message 1482: by Tim (new)

Tim (tpc5) | 13 comments Yes, maybe you are right. I think my frustration just comes from being an avid Trekker, or Trekkie if you prefer, and know things like this can so easily be avoided. Indeed, you have to wonder sometimes what the technical advisors, continuity teams, and the Director, were thinking.

message 1483: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 41 comments Valid points, but I guess many movies I have thoroughly enjoyed had flaws in them too. I have tried to love the new Trekkie moves, while I like them fine they never set me on fire. I'm pretty sad about that actually.

Tim (tpc5) | 13 comments Have never been totally sold on Star Wars, but you are on the money with Bladerunner and the later series of BSG; in fact BSG was the only TV series where I bought all the episodes on Blu Ray. Some flaws there for sure but what a ride.

message 1487: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Johnson Hello to all. My name is Rebecca. I am am avid reader and out and proud sci-fi/fantasy nerd.

I am very happy that I was able to find this group. I don't have a lot of friends that are into the sci-fi/fantasy side of things and even fewer I know of that enjoy the space opera style. So I am trying to be less of a lurker in my internet wanderings.

So onto my introductions list:

Favorite Book- I am one of the group that cannot pin down one favorite book so I am going to give a few series I enjoyed. Ender's Game series, and Hyperion Series, I also enjoyed the Culture series - I plan on reading other books from Ian Banks not in the Culture world. I am a big fan of the Confederation of Valor series by Tanya Huff. This series was the one that convinced me that I liked military Sci-fi, and I really liked that it had a female main character. I want to find more of that in the future.

Favorite Genres: Miltary sci-fi, space opera, fantasy, horror, murder mystery, and Thrillers

Favorite TV shows: Star Trek-TOS, TNG and Voyager, Stargate-SG1 and SGA, Firefly- browncoats all the way!! Blacklist, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Law&Order: Criminal Intent, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Torchwood, Are You Being Served?, Monty Python, Sherlock Holmes- the Granada series with Jeremy Brett,

Favorite Movies: A Fish Called Wanda, The Princess Bride, Dark City, Serenity, LOtR. Guilty Pleasures: bad 80s action movies, Steven Segal movies, Love Actually- its my Christmas movie,

Favorite Food: Macaroni and Cheese, Pad Thai, Pizza- a staple for most right?
Day Job: I am apart of the exciting world of retail.
Hobbies: reading, coffee drinking, I am not very exciting in that department.
Other: I am not too sure what to put here. I am excited about maybe finding new books to read and people to get to know. So that's about it from me.

Tim (tpc5) | 13 comments Rebecca, welcome, you may have found your literary home.

The Princess Bride?? :-)

message 1489: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Johnson Hi Tim.

The Princess Bride is awesome. It was directed by Rob Reiner and based off a book by William Goldman of the same name. It's a movie that spoofs fairy tales in the same way Spinal Tap spoofs music documentaries.

Grandson: Has it got any sports in it?
Grandpa: Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...
Grandson: Doesn't sound too bad. I'll try and stay awake.
Grandpa: Oh, well, thank you very much, very nice of you. Your vote of confidence is overwhelming.
