Welcome, Jon.
Welcome, Jon.
Name: Shanna RedwindFavorite Books: The Martian would likely be my all time favourite book. It managed to mix my two favourite genres of survival and science fiction just to my taste.
Favorite Genres: It changes. Right now it's Science fiction and adult apocalyptic/dsytopian books. For a long time it was fantasy. Then there was a YA dystopian phase.. After that I decided that urban fantasy/paranormal romance was the only thing I was looking for. Mixed in there somewhere was a run on survivalism/prepping non fiction. And I'm always up for a good survival book in any genre.
Favorite TV shows: Firefly.
Favorite Movies: Tremors and Demolition Man
Favorite Food: Steak
Day Job: Vegetable farming
Hobbies: Reading, Camping
Hi Shanna! Nice to meet you :) I think we all go through phases in our reading. Sometimes we repeat them!
Name: Craig RobertsonFavorite Books: The Forever War, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Lord of The Rings, Dune (one only, not the later 'stuff'), 1984, Things Fall Apart, Replay.
Favorite Genres: Space opera, any good scifi.
Favorite TV shows: Come on, Star Trek.
Favorite Movies: Come on squared, Star Wars.
Favorite Food: Is this a test? Pizza, duh!
Day Job: Author
Hobbies: Kayaking, bike riding, grandson entertaining.
Hey, all. I'm a very frustrated scifi reader. I will put a popular book on my Kindle and make it ten pages before I bail. Seriously, give me story, writing craft, and wonder. This week I started Awakened by Aderle (crap), Desperate Fire by Nuttall (weak cheese). Storm Portal by Stern (Huh? What?), and I finished We Are Legion by Taylor (whiplash of brain and weak ending).
My point is in the storm of titles, popularity and press are anti-indicators of quality. All I want a well written good story, you know 2001, Islands in the Sky.
Craig,First, welcome to the group!
Second, what is the most recently published space opera/sci-fi success you have had?
Looking at what you already like, you may enjoy Starship Troopers and The Three-Body Problem. The Vorkosigan Saga stories are also recommended.
Tx! SST is also a fav. Excellent. I'll look into the TBP and TVS now. I just bailed on Alien Hunters this morning. Argh!As to my writing, I'm not sure it's proper to promote it, but you can find it on Amazon under my name. I'm NOT the Scottish mystery writer who swears a lot. I've gotten grief over that from readers who confused us. I had one fan tell me personally that he was shocked I had such a foul mouth.
Given that I am currently reading one of Ray Cummings' novel I am probably not one to be commenting on current Stf.

Name: TheBookHunterFavorite Books: Star Wars: Heir to the Empire, Halo: The Fall of Reach
Favorite Genres: Science Fiction, all the way!
Favorite TV shows: Pretty much every Star Trek series, The Flash, Arrow, Battlestar Galactica, X-Files
Favorite Movies: Star Wars (All of them!), Star Trek (Most of them...*Cough* Star Trek V...*Cough*), Blade Runner, pretty much any comic book/superhero movie.
Favorite Food: Pizza. And Burritos. Pizzaritos?
Day Job: Contemplating world domination.
Hobbies: Reading, of course! And vintage video games.
Other:
The Vorkosigan Saga stories are also recommended.I started book 1. 4 armed genetically engineered children. Okay, gross and not too humanitarian, but I'm in. Tx
Hello Thread!I'm (also a) Bill. I'm not very good at making lists of favorite things because-- Hey, look a squirrel!
Books: My favorite space opera books would be Ian M. Banks' Culture Series. I like Charles Stross, Stephen Baxter, John Scalzi, David Brin, Alan Dean Foster, Heinlein, Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and will kick myself for not thinking of twenty others that I should have. I just finished the second of Dennis Taylor's Bobiverse series and loved the heck out of it, but I get where Craig's coming from. It was a fun "what would an engineer do if" sort of read. I enjoyed Ann Leckie's ANCILLARY JUSTICE. I read Kameron Hurley's THE STARS ARE LEGION, and was impressed, grossed-out, but impressed.
Day Job: I write software and words and stuff.
TV: Firefly, Agents of Shield, Vikings, House of Cards. I really want to watch The Expanse and Game of Thrones, but I'm saving them up. Enjoyed Battlestar Galactica but hated the ending. I grew-up on Star Trek (ToS) and Star Wars and the original BSG.
Food: I have a serious Indian food problem which I have accidentally treated by moving to a place with exactly one tolerable Indian place which only has a menu of half a dozen dishes.
If I was stranded on a desert island and could only take one thing it would be: A fully stocked resort with excellent WiFi.
...then I would spend the whole time reading on my e-reader in the shade anyway. I'm also assuming my wife gets to come because of the whole not-an-inanimate-object loophole.
So, that's me, hi!

Again, welcome!

Welcome! I'd be interested to hear what you think of Altered Carbon as I keep toying with reading it or not.
Name: NickI have never read space opera/scifi books before, I struggle with reading, mainly attention span and dealing with moderate sleep apnea (which I have been told affects my reading). So with that being said I start my journey with L. Ron Hubbards Mission Earth series. I hope that joining in discussion here will help me maintain my focus and drive to finish this book and continue with the series.
Welcome, Nick. That's interesting. I also have sleep apnea but I've never heard that it affected my reading. It's true that I don't read as much as I used to when I was young, but I've just attributed that to old eyes and hands. Is it because you tend to doze off when reading? Do you use a CPAP?
I get sleepy/fall asleep mere minutes after starting to read. I can only read 5-10 min before I doze off. I do not use a CPAP, the wanted me to have another study to get one. That was a few years ago and I’ve had some things get in the way of it. I should probably get in lol. I even struggle reading stuff while on the internet. If an article/post is lengthy I lose interest/doze off.
Well, I don't know if it would work for you, but I sleep with a CPAP and wouldn't be without it. I rarely doze off during the day and certainly not while I'm reading.
Anyway, I hope we can help you find some books to get you perked up.

I completely understand about apnea interfering with reading. I tried a CPAP for a couple years, but it was a love/hate relationship. I finally decided it interfered more with sleep than it help, so I switched to a dental appliance that pulls my jaw forward at night. Now I can read again!
Popping in to say hi. I think my first space opera was a James H Schmitz book, one of his Telzey stories. I still love The Witches of Karres.
Currently I'm waiting impatiently for more books by authors like EM Foner, Barry J Hutchison and Lindsay Buroker.
I'm also a paranormal romance author, venturing into sci fi having loved Anne McCaffrey's books for years.
I like snarky A.I.'s, space pirate shenanigans and discovering new worlds. Nice to meet you all and I'm looking forward to picking up some new books - especially if people can recommend ones in Kindle Unlimited, to save my book budget!

Welcome, Jenny. I think I just saw that Lindsay Buroker has a brand new book.
I'm dashing off to look! I've requested Amazon alerts with the follow button on her author profile, but Amazon is slow! Thank you :)
If you love Witches of Karres, have you seen The Wizard of Karres
and
The Sorceress of Karres yet? Different authors of course, and not the same flavor but enjoyable.

Tennessee has some fantastic falls. My favorite is Fall Creek Falls. There are at least 10 major systems in the area in addition to Fall Creek Falls.
Hubby and I are VERY excited about the total eclipse on AUG 21st. Fall Creek Falls is in the region of totality and we booked a cabin there for the event. Fingers crossed that there won't be any clouds. We've got our eclipse sunglasses, and friends from Australia are flying in especially to join us there!
Susan wrote: "Betsy wrote: "Welcome Susan. What is waterfall hiking? Do you mean to them or in them?"AND I have hiked IN them before as well!

Welcome, Susan. A question about hiking IN waterfalls: Doesn't it get your book or Kindle all wet? ;-)
Okay, so IN is actually BEHIND, and nothing in the backpack gets wet, but your clothes get sprayed. Again, I'm new to Goodreads, so hopefully the video will be allowed here (?)https://www.facebook.com/serhamilton/...
Hubby and I hiked for just under 2 hours to reach these falls. It was breathtaking. If you're going to hike to waterfalls, do so in Spring. We visited the same falls the previous October and it was BONE DRY...
Welcome, Mallory. I'm glad your working on your own book. Some of us, including me, are writers as well as avid readers.

I'm a huge fan and actively collect.

I'm actually starting to diversify a lot more this year. This year I've read a handful of Space Operas and realize I think I like them! So now it's the quest to find the good ones. :-D
