As discussed in the main thread for the challenge (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...) I set up a second thread for you to setup and track your challenges.

Here you can do large posts that you edit with your progress, so you can see at one glance which challenges you already completed.
You can use one post for everything or set up 2-3 posts in a row, if that works better for you.

Nonethelessplease use the main thread as well, whenever you finish a book for the challenge, so I can keep track there for the whole challenge. :)

Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series certainly covers the "Greek Mythology" part of the Son of Zeus line for Herc.

Some general suggestions:

Most of the Star Wars novels feature Jedi Knights (2. Shield Toss
Read a book with a shield on the cover or which has a knight/paladin as main character.)

The Hulk has at least one novel, What Savage Beast by Peter David (2. Dr. Banner
Read a book with a scientist on the cover or a scientist as main protagonist.)

There are several Iron Man novels (2. Billionaire extraordinaire
Read a book with money or gold on the cover or with a rich protagonist.) Similarly, Batman novels.

Giants play a part in both Stephen R Donaldson’s Thomas Covenant series and CS Lewis’ The Silver Chair (1. Giantic
Read a book with a giant/large person on the cover or where giants are mentioned or side characters)

Anyone looking for ruins books can consider Robin Hobb's Rain Wild Chronicles, it's not her best work but it definitely has ruins in it.

And another question: does a starship count as a "flying object"?

message 20: by Wayland, Ernest Scribbler (new)

Wayland Smith | 3545 comments Mod
And two more questions, demonstrating the depth of my technical knowledge here...

If I start the challenge with the shelf on the main thread, will it fill in the books I've already done, do I need to do that manually, or is there no way to do that?

How are folks doing the strike out on books they've read?

Thanks for any help. I am SO not a tech...

message 21: by Nara (new)

Nara (greengp01) strike out can be done using the tags < s > and < / s > surrounding the words you want striked out (remove the spaces though)

i.e. < s > (book title) < / s >
If you want to know how to do other modifiers, you can click the "some html is ok" link just above the comment box on the right

I don't know what you mean by the first question though...

message 22: by Wayland, Ernest Scribbler (new)

Wayland Smith | 3545 comments Mod
Yeah, I phrased that badly. Let me try that again:

There's an actual challenge that Rinn set up with a shelf. I didn't notice it until after I'd started entering books. Will the books I have already entered count in that challenge, or do I need to do something clever with the dates, or something?

message 23: by Nara (new)

Nara (greengp01) The bookshelf basically just keeps count of the number of books that you've read as a part of the challenge. So as long as the books that you have on that shelf have a "read" date within the challenge limits (basically, if it's read on a date in 2014) then it counts towards the challenge. Does that kind of make sense?

message 24: by Wayland, Ernest Scribbler (new)

Wayland Smith | 3545 comments Mod
It does, yes. I shall experiment. Thank you.

message 25: by Wayland, Ernest Scribbler (new)

Wayland Smith | 3545 comments Mod
Hmm.. precisely what I was trying to avoid. It is telling me I have read 0 books for that when I've done 3 or so. Must go tinker more....

message 26: by Nara (new)

Nara (greengp01) I had a look at your shelves, and it looks like you haven't got any books in your challenge shelf. You have to add the books to the shelf for them to count to the challenge

message 27: by Rinn, (Retired mod) Captain of the SSV Normandy (new)

Rinn (rinnsohma) | 3456 comments Mod
Yep, you need to make sure you have a shelf assigned to the challenge, like 'avengers-vs-xmen-challenge' or something, and then the books that count towards the challenge are shelved on there =)

Kirsty Cabot (kirstycabot) | 1924 comments Mod
I thought the rule was was that it had to be started on 2014?

message 31: by Rinn, (Retired mod) Captain of the SSV Normandy (new)

Rinn (rinnsohma) | 3456 comments Mod
Well, Mpauli's rule is that it was started AND finished in 2014. The challenge may or may not count it, as long as the finish date is 2014. Not sure. But we should stick to Mpauli's rule obviously, so it HAS to be started and finished in 2014 to count.

Freya (flamecat) | 1835 comments Mod
Oh fiddlesticks... I'll have to remove that one then! I pretty much no more than 100 pages into a 700 page book, but that's a bit further than say a couple of pages! :/

message 33: by Wayland, Ernest Scribbler (new)

Wayland Smith | 3545 comments Mod
Well, THAT was annoying. I read a book that almost counted for three of the challenges, but not really any of them. Devil May Cry, in Sherilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series: has some sex scenes, but probably isn't really erotica; usually based in Greek Myth, but this time veers off to Sumerian; has characters that are involved with dreams, but they play minor roles this time. Irksome.

If you have trouble with the phase shift ability, there's still the possibility to go for the cat cover.
As for the ability itself, ghosts should have the ability to pass through objects/walls, so a ghost book/character should work here.

I gave one of the warrior cats books as a christmas present to my god-child. But I think there should be others. Robin Hobb has one with a cat cover f.e.
It also counts, if the cat is somewhere in the background.
