colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I wake up with pinched nerves and things, but nothing like you lot. Except one time I'd pinched a nerve so bad I couldn't move my head and had to call out of work. I still wonder if they believed me...

Felina Yay! I've had no significant sleep related injuries. I own sleep.

Saying that is sort of like asking the cosmos to push you out of bed. ;)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I've never injured myself in bed...alone.

(Was that joke to risque for a pastor?)

message 305: by [deleted user] (new)

I left out those injuries... *cough*

(One of only two concussions I've ever had. It was more fun than the one I got solo, at least.)

message 306: by Felina (new)

Felina I was talking about sleep. Nobody mentioned extracurriculars involving bedroom furniture.

Which I really haven't had many injuries in that regard either. A stubbed toe and a really bad hair pulling incident and not in a sexy way. Very painful and very on accident on his part. Perhaps I'm pretty limber?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments ...like I said I'm a pastor so I won't go into details...

message 308: by [deleted user] (new)

I've actually been fairly blessed in lack of injuries in that department too! I mean, for me, considering my usual rate of injury in other walks of life. :p The concussion is the only incident I can think of, and that involved alcohol, an end table, and a bed that was narrower than I thought...

Conversations between me and hubby

message 312: by [deleted user] (new)

Hah!

I've had those conversations around my house... (What do you mean the floor isn't an acceptable place to keep books? I pick them up and dust them!)

message 313: by Felina (new)

Felina Ha ha. I'm actively trying to downsize my collection so hopefully I don't end up in that place.

But honestly...no shelf room is not a good reason to not get more books. It's called crevices, nooks, cabinets, the TV stand, the fridge...

message 314: by [deleted user] (new)

Exactly.

Also, now I'm wondering if you keep your excess books on the fridge or in it. ;)

(I'm reminded of that Friends episode where Joey kept The Shining in the freezer...)

message 315: by Felina (new)

Felina On...in. What's the difference? although one way makes them slightly chilled. Best when served with wine.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments My shelves are double loaded and sag significantly from weight. Life is good.

message 317: by [deleted user] (new)

Several of my bookcases loom over my bed, since that was the only wall space I had to put them on, and they're double stacked and sagging too. I had an ex who said he was nervous to go to sleep because he thought they were all going to collapse and kill him in the night.

I pointed out that it's mostly paperbacks so it was less likely to kill him than the shelves on the other side of the room that are all weighty hardbacks.

For some reason he wasn't terribly reassured...

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I've actually "worn out" a couple of sets of shelves. Never been hurt though...

message 319: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 05, 2014 06:08PM) (new)

I've had one shelf collapse, but no books were hurt.

In lesser news, no people were either. ;)

(My father rebuilt that bookcase so it won't happen again. Aren't dads wonderful?)

message 320: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments When my cats were very small young kittens one of the first things they did was knock down just about every single book I owned... no kitties were harmed by the books... or by me. The books on the other hand... there were a few casualities and I had to replace my Game of Throne books.

message 321: by [deleted user] (new)

Aww! I had to replace my original Game of Thrones too, but that was my own silliness, not my cat's -- I cut my finger and didn't snatch my hand away in time before the paper soaked up the blood. Vicious little book...

I have the nice hardback reissues now though so I'm happy.

Cats and books are a nightmare. I had to shut my cat out of my two main book-storing rooms, and the bookcases in the other rooms had to have glass doors. The second I opened one, a ball of fluff would go flying past me onto the nearest shelf...

She tried to nibble the corners while I was reading, too. I got used to one-handed reading pretty quick -- one to hold the book, one to stroke the cat/keep her from devouring the book.

Thank heavens for e-readers.

Is it bad the death by book avalanche is kind of my secret fantasy for how I want to die?

message 323: by Felina (new)

Felina While I have caught Alex and Em trying to take a nibble at a book corner from time to time I've never had any problems. Cats and books belong together. God designed it that way. My books and cats are free to roam as they please about my house. They often snuggle together. It's kind of magical. It's kind of nice to come home too. Huzzah! My favorite things already laid out for me.

message 324: by [deleted user] (new)

Felina, I wish your cats could have taught mine manners. It seems like Ragdolls will devour anything paper!

Also anything that even resembles a cable. Coral could sniff out a cable at a hundred paces. Absolutely everything had to be connected to circuit breakers and wrapped in unchewable cable protectors.

Destructive little hellcats. I miss 'em.

My fantasy for how I want to die involves sugary foodstuffs and Francois Arnaud lookalikes, but I'll take death by bookalanche as plan B.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments The only book/cat related incidents have had to do with the cats pushing books off shelves so they could claim the spot.

message 326: by Felina (new)

Felina My cats just sleep on top of the books. In odd angles. If you look at my pics you'll see one of Alex taking a siesta while I was trying to rearrange my books. Dummy.

Well, technically they go back tomorrow. I don't have a sub job scheduled until Wednesday. Today was a teacher workday, oddly enough, especially considering that Friday was also a teacher workday. I'm guessing its because report cards are due to come out soon.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Looking for some advice..

Once a month my fiance and I get together with a group of friends (usually 10 to 15 people present at get together) and do a board game day. We love board games, so we spend the whole day playing them and competing to win a traveling trophy that we fabricated.

January will be our month to host. I need a CHEAP idea for a meal (people will bring appetizers and desserts and such).. I'm broke from Christmas and can't see spending $200 like I usually end up spending. Things we've done in the past - taco bar, hot dog bar, breakfast get together with a bunch type bar, summer BBQ stuff - grilled chicken and BBQ pulled pork. Even the hot dog idea turned into a lot of money..

So any ideas for entertaining on a budget? I'd like to do something new.. I thought about a pasta bar, but have a feeling that might add up. But then again, if I just do three sauces and box pasta it might be ok. But that also might be a ton of work.

I need something easy (so I can do a lot ahead of time and have the day of, mostly, for playing games), cheap, and awesome.

Laurel Crock Pot Chili!

message 341: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I considered that, but then I worried that some people wouldn't like chili. Then I thought about making two types of chili, and then I was like screw that, too expensive. It's an idea though, if I can get around the worry that some people won't like it.

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments Stouffers lasagna and a salad.

message 343: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments That probably would save me money.. But I prefer home cooking. Everything from scratch. It's a sickness! But maybe I need to consider getting away from that just this once.. Assuming it is cheaper, I'd have to check into it.

message 344: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments I am also usually a home cooking kind of girl. But lasagna is such a pain and Stouffers family size is so easy and affordable, I've been known to make an exception.

I'm not the best at a lot of these but here are some things I think are tasty, cheap(ish) and/or fingerfood.

Bacon and Blue Cheeseburger Potato Skins: http://tastykitchen.com/blog/2013/01/... --> easy but don't use turkey meat like i did. Plus you don't have to use blue cheese, it was a little strong

Spicy Garlic Chicken Wings + Blue Cheese Dip: http://www.simplyscratch.com/2012/09/... -->also easy but the sauce is SPICY

Cheesy Stuffed Meatball Sliders: http://www.howsweeteats.com/2011/09/c... ---> SO EASY. Plus I used string cheese instead of block cheese so I just made a meatball and shoved the string cheese in

Taco Stuffed Shells: http://budgetbytes.blogspot.com/2012/... --> LABOR INTENSIVE but can be done ahead and easy to re-heat. It's also kind cheap (but labor intensive)

Taco Chicken Bowls: http://www.budgetbytes.com/2011/07/ta... --> Quick, easy, cheap and done in a slow cooker.

Crock Pot Chicken A La Criolla: http://www.skinnytaste.com/2012/01/cr... --> I like it and its super easy but its a meal kind of food instead of finger food.

Better Than Restaurant Guacamole: http://www.simplyscratch.com/2011/07/... --> I love guac

I have to disagree on the guacamole. If you've got good ripe avocados, the only thing you need is garlic and salt. Everything else is just burying the avocado flavour. But that is just me. :)
My usual Saturday supper is shredded chicken or fish tacos with some red rice and guacamole. I love Mexican food.
