HomeInMyShoes Ummm...why is FictFact listing a Harry Potter prequel as something I need to read to complete the series?

Doing some research it appears it was written in 2008 for a charity auction and was on-line at one point, but there appears to be no available sources for the book. The OCD in me is screaming bloody murder that I can't actually mark the series as finished now.

If you can read the handwriting this is it:
http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Har...

Just click on the handwriting to make it bigger.

This what wiki says:
The story, handwritten on a card, would then be auctioned off alongside similar cards from other authors on June 11th 2008, with the proceeds going to charity. A book of facsimiles was published in August 2008, allowing fans to own and read the story. As of 2009 the story is no longer officially available online.

It doesn't even say the name of the book, so I doubt it's even available for purchase anymore.

message 2509: by HomeInMyShoes (last edited Jan 12, 2015 10:59AM) (new)

HomeInMyShoes It never was purchasable that I know of. I did some more looking and found it on Internet Archive

I marked it as read on FictFact, but I'm not recording it anywhere in my spreadsheets and it certainly doesn't count to my series challenge or GoodRead reads. It was just added recently to FictFact and I'm not sure why they would have done that. IMO, it is not part of the series.

message 2510: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Agreed that it's not really part of the series. Weird that FictFact is adding it. I wonder if they will add the Pottermore stories as well.

message 2511: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments It was purchasable, but not as a single story. It was the whole collection of the notecard stories from various authors.

It's available from third-party sellers on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Whats-Your-Stor...

I might possibly have bought a copy when it first came out...

message 2512: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes I found it odd that FictFact had added it. I hope they don't add the other stuff. But that's me. For me, there is the series and there is the extra.

I sent a message last week trying to get Come, Sweet Death! added to the Brenner series and making a point about the ordering on FictFact which is out of sequence to the original language publishing. So far it has come to nothing, but then I don't know what turnaround time is for the site. Apparently I am the only one following the series on FictFact.

I don't even get excited about the Pottermore stories anymore. Partially because it just reminds me that I never got past the Polyjuice Potion and partially because they're just been little bios and not really "stories".

But, yeah, it's not really part of the series any more than Beedle the Bard or the little "school book" books.

message 2514: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) LOL! I never got past the Polyjuice Potion either. I haven't been on Pottermore in ages and like you, I don't get excited anymore. I read the first one, but to call it a "story" was a real stretch. I was seriously annoyed with the hype the media made about it. I'll probably read them though once I'm done with my re-read.

message 2515: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Yeah. I mean, the Rita Skeeter interview one was kinda cutely snarky and all, but most of the information given in it was stuff that any insane person avid fan would've picked up from the various interviews and whatnot anyway.

And then when they made a huge deal about the Umbridge bio, and I read it and kept looking for more because I seriously thought what I'd read was a summary and not the actual "story".

I didn't even look for the Xmas ones they were making such a big deal about.

message 2516: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I felt the same way. I read the Skeeter one. (I think). But it wasn't anything new. Rowling kind of annoys me, to be honest. Either she should just let Potter go, or give the fans what they really want. A new book. Stop teasing. She should either write a sequel that takes up after the epilogue, or write short stories (yes, stories) that take place between the end of the book and the prologue. Personally, I would love to see something from the James & Lily era. Or even a younger Dumbledore. Rowling has such a rich world to play in, and I feel as though she's wasting it.

Just my opinion of course.

message 2517: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes ^Completely agree, but I wouldn't be sad if there is nothing either. There is so much stuff to read out there. I am looking forward to my son getting old enough to start reading the series. It's a wonderful set of books.

Laurel Off topic,

I bought a fitbit Charge today. Just setting it up. I need to make sure I move around regularly and generally try to stay healthy. I want to see if the daily step count reminder and tracking tool will be helpful. Has anyone had one? Feelings?

Also, hello!

message 2519: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments My step-mother-in-law bought me and Jer FitBits for Xmas, but she bought me a large because, apparently, she thinks I'm huge.

Jer informed her that the large does not fit "my little bird bone wrists", and she said she was gonna exchange it but never has.

So, no... ;)

message 2520: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I have a fitbit one so I don't ever see it during the day - so no reminders, etc. but I love it and I love challenges and stuff like that.

message 2521: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I have the FitBit One, which uses the same tracking tools as the other FitBits. When I'm actually trying to stay active it is indeed very helpful. Sometimes I think I move around way more than I actually do, but when I see the counter I'm not even close to my goal.

I don't like the FitBit's other exercise tool and diet tracking all that much. It's not really complete in listing foods or exercises nor do I find the stuff easy to find. But, I do like the daily step and stair counter. You can also join in with friends or strangers in challenges, which helps to stay motivated.

Colleen, your step-MIL sounds like a real peach. /sarcasm

I don't like that stuff, either.

I track exercises on Fitocracy and food on MFP. MFP is bad about adding calories back in based on exercise so I don't use that portion of it. Only when trying to track what I ate.

message 2524: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Colleen, I'm sorry about your step-mother-in-law. I hope it works out.

I wanted it mainly for the step counter. I thought the stair counter was interesting, as my classroom is at the top of a set of stairs. I'm curious to see how many times I go up and down those things in a day. I'm also curious to look at the sleep stats as I am often tired, but my boyfriend is a night owl who then gets up at 5:30 for work. I love him (she mutters through gritted teeth).

I'm not at the point to track food, so I don't think that will be a factor for me. There must be dozens, if not several dozens of apps available if and when I get to that point ;)

message 2525: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) The sleep stats are on the misleading side, so take it as a grain of salt when you use it. I say that because it tracks how many times you move your arm in a night. So essentially, if you're a calm person or say you decide to read in the middle of the night, you can be up all night in the same position and it will look like you got a good night's rest. I tend to move around quite a bit, but that doesn't mean I don't sleep well.

It is interesting though to see sleep pattern movements. Like, I found out that I tend to go to the bathroom around the same time every night (I'm too bleary eyed and blind to look at the clock when I do) or moved around at roughly the same times daily.

If you have a smartphone you can also download the app and have the info handy. Since I have my fitbit one in my bra the app is handy to check my steps.

I actually have to contact the company because my FitBit isn't tracking properly. Yesterday, it cut off my steps at 4 pm and lately it's been adding extra stairs when I haven't gone up any.

I have it, which is the problem since she's in Kentucky.

And it was funny 'cause she mailed them directly to us and didn't include a note or anything, so we were like, "What the heck?"

But I asked Jer if he thought maybe it was our Xmas gift from Tammy, since she's sent us diet books and stuff in the past.

I didn't mean to bitch about her. She means well, and she's funny... I just didn't know what she was thinking getting me a large!

message 2527: by Laurel (last edited Jan 15, 2015 01:43PM) (new)

Laurel Thanks Jackie, that's very helpful.

Yes, I have downloaded the app to my iphone. I get what you mean about the sleeping. But I'm still curious to see if our dogs wake us up at the same time each night, etc.

I hope I don't become hyper focused, checking my stats every half hour. But I am looking forward to using it to get myself moving more. I need to make sure I move around a certain amount each day and I'm positive there are days I'm too much of a couch potato.

We haven't bene all that proactive about it 'cause, honestly, I don't really care. ;)

HomeInMyShoes Dream Killer. Awesome.

Books that have had me up late so far:

Sanaaq: An Inuit Novel
The Demolished Man
Brenner and God
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

Even Tortilla Flat was a late night, but I blame the wine. The book was fine, not Cannery Row fine, but fine. However, the wine and the fireplace were awesome with the -40C windchill outside that night.

FYI - I discovered that you can like Fitbit to MyFitnessPal, which is much better for food and exercise tracking. All of that data then goes into the fitbit tracking without having to use their stupid database
