I have a confession to make.
I've said it before, but in a different group, I think.
I'm not a bibliophile.

Me neither. I like books - of course - but I like reading them better. I sort of have this thing about germs - and I don't do well with used books. *shiver*
I've gotten better about buying used books, but I'm still picky.I'll still choose an e-book over one, though.
I'm not really a germophobe, and don't think twice about getting a used book - though I do try to get them in "very good" or, at the very least "good", condition.I've also bought second hand clothing and the like.
(Speaking of germs and books - you should ask Becky or Jackie about library copies of 50 Shades of Grey.)

I will almost always pick a paper book over an ebook, though. For one, used paper books are generally cheaper and, for another, I can share it or sell or it donate it or whatever.
I don't like the limitations of ownership where ebooks are involved.
Generally the only E-books I own are books that are available in E-book only or where the price difference is so great as as to be a no-brainer. I'm still waiting for the EMP that wipes out E stored information.
:)
I'm a bibliophile and I love used books and new books and sometimes ebooks. Can't really do audio.I go for hardback then Trade before MMPB all day, every day. No matter the book size.
Me to MrsJ. I love shelves of books around me. I know I have a lot of books i should trade or sell, but I keep putting it off. :)

Why should you trade or sell them? They're your books. I do occasional cull my shelves from books I'll never read or mom would read first. Other than that...? I keep my books.

*hugs books*
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "They're books I probably won't read again and it would make room....for more books.:)"
Well, making room for more books is a good and proper thing to do.
*nods*
Yeah, whatever you do don't buy any used 50 Shade books. *shudder* Actually, you should heed that caution with any used erotica books. I'm a bibliophile, but to a certain extent. Once my shelves start overflowing I start purging. I actually have to do that soonish, but been lazy to do so. My books are contained primarily to the library aka reading room aka women cave. But, my checked out library books and current book(s) usually resides in the TV console. I don't like clutter so it bugs me when it gets out of control.
Most of my collection was brought through library sales. The rest are gifts, freebies and clearance sale books. Like Colleen, I have a certain standard for used books. Even library books...if they're too grimey or smelly I won't check them out.
Okay...yeah if you plan to buy erotica I can see going the electronic route. or at least using double thickness reading gloves...and Lysol.
Ugh. I can't imagine sharing a real erotica book. I mean, it must be like sharing underwear or something.Ugh.
There is a custom-made, floor-to-ceiling book case along one wall of my den.Non-fiction, fiction, and audio books each have their own shelves and are situated in alphabetical order by author.
Separate shelves are reserved for DVD's and they are in alphabetical order by title.
I keep an updated inventory stored in my PC plus a hard copy. Whenever someone borrows a book or DVD, their name and the date borrowed are entered beside the title of the item. The borrower is not loaned another item until the previous one is returned.
I am retired; therefore, I have plenty of time to expend upon such anal behavior.

I approve.
We should assign you as the primary librarian when we move into Chris's new house together.
When I moved here I lost a lot of space...my books are all just together. I have cupboards that are now bookcases where the books are 2 and 3 deep. half the time I can't a book I'm looking for. I have to go on expeditions with supplies to track them down.

I appreciate the offer; however, having checked out the number of books listed in your profile and considering my age, I doubt if I would live long enough left to catagorize them all.

That sounds beautiful.
I wish my husband was handy. I'd put him to work making bookcases all the time...
We were supposed to have custom made bookshelves made for us, but it never happened. So instead I bought a ton of Ikea Expedit shelves. Now we're just waiting on a friend to build us a platform for them to sit on because we don't want them directly on the ground. *sigh* Sometimes I feel like I'll never have my shelves done.
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "Anyone ever do the board and blocks thing "back in the day"?"Me! Well, my mom for me. I had my own little bookshelf. But it was only full of kiddie books... :(
That was the early way to do it when I first left home. Never had the giant wire spool coffee table though...
Oh, I like having my shelves and books - but it's partially 'cause I like the easy access, and partially 'cause I like stuff.I mean, I have tons of knick-knacks and pictures and things all over. I have, like, 20 wands, FFS. ;)
But I can walk into a bookstore and come out empty handed. I don't really enjoy just randomly browsing - but I'm not much of a physical store shopper in general. (I mean, I can browse etsy for hours, but, still, I'm usually looking for something specific.)
But, back to books, I'll take paperback over hardback, and cheaper over more expensive - except when I get anal about book covers ('cause art matters, yo).
And I got tired of spending money on books only to not like the stir and then have to deal with getting rid of them - thus the library. (And, yes, that's a bit ironic considering I'll still buy paper over eBooks even though getting rid of an eBook is easier... but that's mostly a cost thing. Well, and I just enjoy reading paper books better... so, yeah, a little contradictory. LOL)
I prefer paperback over hardcover due to comfort, size and price. I prefer ebook over paperback due to portability and price. The only time I automatically choose the paperback is if I purchased a boxed set (like Mistborn) or I initially started the series in that format. Right now, I think that's limited to: The Southern Vampire Series (Sookie Stackhouse), The Black Dagger Brotherhood, and The Hollows. I chose to stay exclusively with ebook format for the Dresden Files.
The Harry Potter Series is the only series that I actually went back and bought in hardcover, and then pre ordered, after purchasing the first two in paperback.
For HP I went back and bought the paperback for easier transport. I only have hardbacks for 5-7, 'cause I couldn't wait for paper.
I have both the US and UK paperback editions of HP (though at some point I'll probably buy the HC boxed set), as well as the ebook versions and UK audio on MP3.Because one can never have too many editions of HP.
I keep trying to find the Stephen Fry Harry Potter audios but they're prohibitively expensive, at least on this side of the Atlantic. I'd like to compare the 2 audio versions.
Becky wrote: "I have both the US and UK paperback editions of HP (though at some point I'll probably buy the HC boxed set), as well as the ebook versions and UK audio on MP3.Because one can never have too many ..."
The media specialist at my eldest's school would agree with you.. Along with the US and UK editions, she bought a copy of the first one in Japanese as well.
I Saw George R.R. Martin's - A Storm of Swords audio in Indigo (Canadian book box store) for $109.00I have it in Hardcover.. Which I think I paid $25.00 on Amazon. My jaw dropped. ONE BOOK.... granted a long book... but WOW
I tend to prefer hardbacks to paperback if its favorite books just cause theyre more durable and look prettier on the shelf! Lol!But these days I pretty much only read ebooks. For me its cheaper, I can get books that I would struggle to get otherwise (at least without paying more for shipping then for the book in the first place) and I don't currently have room for bookshelves.
I do miss the feel and smell of paper books though... *sigh*
I like the convenience of ebooks but they don't quite do it for me like they used to.But I don't have a problem with used at all. I buy a lot - ok, most - of my books used. With exceptions, of course. I get Kate Daniels in hardcopy (but I also have ebook) brand new.
Almost anything else, I scour the net looking for the nicest copy for the cheapest price.
Hardback, then Trade, then MMPB. I do find great deals for hardbacks, tbh. But I do B&M bookstores and the Goodwill a LOT. Amazon's marketplace has great deals on used HBs, too.
Did yall know The Rook was a series??! I bought it and just now saw a 2nd untitled book.blech. Now I don't want to read it as much.
The Rook stands alone. There will be other books after it, I knew that.. But doesn't make it stand any less alone.
As far as I know there is nowhere to buy used books online here. There are some shops that sell used books, but they are normally not ones I like and they are not normally in english. And i prefer to read in english, especially if thats the language they were written in...So for now its buying overpriced books (if I can find any at all) or ebooks.
And I find it so easy to travel with my Kindle. Plus if I finish the book I'm reading I've always got more unread books with me :)
I also love the backlight on it!

Jackie wrote: "Have you tried free shipping sites like bookdepository.com or abebooks.com?"No, I didn't realize they existed!! Will definetly take a look! Though I now that I've gotten used to downloading books immediately I think waiting for them to be shipped here would feel like forever... Lol :)
I haven't got the room for more books at the moment anyways :(
MrsJoseph wrote: "Did yall know The Rook was a series??! I bought it and just now saw a 2nd untitled book.blech. Now I don't want to read it as much."
I didn't know... but, then, I never got through the first book, either.
I am in a rage spiral at work.Something stupid irritated me this morning (long story short, I have to do extra work 'cause someone else didn't do their job) - and now every little request I get is irritating me.
I just wanna be like, "No! Go away and leave me alone!"
Stupid work.
At least it's Friday...
Yeah, I prefer to be left completely alone at work. When everyone and their mother starts stopping by my office it makes me want to close my door, turn off my lights, and pretend that I'm not here.
Well, I'd read it. It doesn't really end in a cliffhanger per se and the "second book" has been coming for a long, long time. It's beginning to be like the Wheel of Time and Song of Ice and Fire sequels...they're supposed to be coming but you expect them when you see them.Oh, that was to MrsJ.

Totally didn't bother me at all.
Once I walked in, all I could think was that it must be what having a super cool aunt or uncle that was a bibliophile - and I just got permission to dig through her books and take what I want.
So, for me, it was more like a free for all smorgasbord.
