First, only God determines who will be saved and who will not. Second, none of us are perfect and God is a God of love and forgiveness. I believe in righteousness by faith. When Jesus came to this earth, he spent a lot of time with people who were considered as the rejects of that time. There was the woman caught in adultery, the woman at the well who had five husbands, tax collectors, and the list can go on. Jesus reached out to them by first showing love and mercy.

I know that Nico is a fictional character, but Riordan did point out that there are kids like Nico out there. Our first reaction shouldn't be to shun these kids and make them outcasts. It is WORSE for them in the long run. Love and mercy needs to be the first step taken.

message 266: by Sheechiibii (last edited Oct 21, 2013 09:02AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sheechiibii Just want to say that taking the bible word-for-word is not wise. The bible says a lot of things that are quite frankly ridiculous and that nobody these days adheres to.

Things like:
Eating ham or seafood
Getting a tattoo
Shaving
Remarrying
Working on a Sunday
Women speaking in church
Sex before marriage
Wearing cotton and wool in the same outfit

Now, if you have to follow the bible completely to be a 'real' Christian, then good luck not doing all the above mentioned things. And if you think it's all right to do them, then really how is homosexuality any different?

message 267: by Wesley (new)

Wesley Wallace Julia, it doesn't have anything to do with Percy not being gay, but he is an accidental stalker. Nico went to the other camp to get away from Percy, and guess where Percy ends up. Additionally, Percy keeps saving Nico. This is not good. Nico just wants to move on, but Riordan won't let him. This is the horror.

themikko After 500+ pages of the book. Chapter XXXVI is the only one that I can't stop thinking about. :'(

Oh, Nico. No one would judge you..

themikko Well, Nico always acted a bit weird around Percy so I guess some people kinda saw it coming

message 270: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I LOOOVE the PJO and the HOO series but I have to admit I didn't really like the Nico being gay because I love Nico with Thalia and I always thought of him ending up with her. Don't get me wrong I fully support gay rights I think that more people should be aware of Gay rights even smaller children. But just WHY NICO?? I jut wish it had been another character.

Sheechiibii But Thalia is a Hunter of Artimis. She can't ever have romance.

message 276: by Zack (last edited Oct 22, 2013 01:42PM) (new)

Zack Hmm thinking back to the book where Nico was introduced, didn't Aphrodite promise to make Percy's love life interesting? And In a tragic way? Can't wait to see if RR brings that In haha :D have to say I didn't actually think of nico as gay till they kept emphasizing his supposed crush on annabeth, I was thinking that I didn't see that, then they brought up his supposed jealousy of Percy cuz he liked annabeth, and I was like I see where you are going with this lol. I just hope nico isn't just left out in the cold, though I am not sure who he would go with. Hmm.

message 277: by [deleted user] (new)

All I want to know is how Percy and the rest are going to find out >_< And their reactions!!!!Especially Percy's reaction...How is Annabeth gonna be like? She's probably gonna be surprised that Nico didn't have a crush on her, but her own boyfriend LOLOL Uncle Rick, that troll xDD
Argghhh, I just can't wait! Maybe I'll just go kill the time before the Blood of Olympus comes out by reading fan fictions T^T

Cristina I know, I'm curious as to how Hazel will take it. She is Nico's cousin...

message 279: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol yeah Hazel too. But Hazel is so god damn sweet and nice that I'm sure she'll accept him no matter what. Btw, she is Nico's sister, not cousin.

Cristina I'm sure Hazel would, but what if hazel has had some bad experience that might make her hate him?!

message 281: by [deleted user] (new)

Nononononoonononononooooo stop !! I want everybody to accept him! Nico is already so resentful and lonely, I don't want people to reject him and then he'll feel even more resentful and lonelier !! Poor Nico, my baby <33

Blogger Girl I think hazel will definitely stand by her brother no matter what

Cristina I hope so, but Riordan can be a little twisted sometimes, like making Annabeth feel alone in Tartarus, even though Percy was right there. I felt so bad for her.

message 284: by [deleted user] (new)

I think everyone will accept him. I mean, he's just gay! Whats the big deal? He likes another guy the same way a girl would like another boy! I think everyone's just gonna accept him. Uncle Rick's whole point of making him gay is to show that gay people have a place on earth and they can be accepted and stuff so if he didn't make the other characters accept him, then what was the god damn point of making him gay?

Blogger Girl yeah but...i can't believe this is the last time we'll see percy & co. after blood of Olympus i'll want an epilogue to know what happens like 5 years later or something. oh well. hope no one dies but i have a feeling it won't be happily ever after like in the last olympian

Cristina I agree, it's not a big deal to be gay, but people act like it is. Gays are no different from you or me. I hate it when people make gay/lesbian jokes, cause they don't get that people actually are gay, and it isn't funny, the way people talk about them like they're worth less than everyone else.

message 287: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah I hate it when people talk trash about gays too. And Blogger, did you know? Uncle Rick said he isn't going to make an epilogue. This is exactly what he wrote when someone asked him if he was going to make an epilogue: "Nope. I don't like epilogues. I like to leave things open to your imagination rather than, "And then they got married and had 2.5 children and bought a Honda Civic and died at age 85."

Blogger Girl IKR!!! we already have enough things to worry about and not someone's sexuality. WOOOO I LOVE THE MOBILE VERSION OF GOODREADS

message 290: by [deleted user] (new)

OMG yes the mobile version <333 and I want and epilogue so badly!!! I don't like leaving things to my imagination ! I DO want to know if they got married or got a Honda Covic or had 2.5 children!! :(

Blogger Girl maybe enough fangirls will make him change his mind....

Cristina I think they will get married. They both love eachother, but do you think they will have kids? I could argue both yes and no.

Blogger Girl definitely kids. I mean it's percy we're talking about.....

message 294: by [deleted user] (new)

I think they will have children! Remember how Percy was thinking how if he had kids and all that stuff in Tartarus ? He was imagining a future with Annabeth.. And Percy is the kinda guy who wants kids, I can tell xDD

Blogger Girl or maybe the process...nevermind

message 296: by Joy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Joy First, I just want to say that I really appreciate the mood of respect for the opinions of others and the gracious way all of you are dealing with other people's opinions. It makes debates a lot more fun. :)

Sooo... first a few words about what you said, Cecerose. :) I'm glad it seems like we both agree on parents informing their children but not forcing them to believe something.

However... I don't think I agree with you (or any of the other commenters) when you say we can't trust the Bible. I'll start with why I don't agree with the specific "problems" you mentioned in the Bible.

- People can't get divorced - First, it's important to say that just because the majority of Americans - or even American "Christians" - doesn't follow something God says, that doesn't mean it's invalid. There are thousands of people suffering persecution and even death in countries like Iran, Egypt, and China who have very different ideas of what "sacrificing to follow Christ" really means. And I'm not trying to bash others here - I'm just as guilty of not LIVING what I SAY as anyone else. In light of this, I don't see how American divorce rates negate the Bible. People for thousands of years, from our founding fathers to French noblemen, respected God's view of marriage clearly outlined in the Bible: one man, one woman, one lifetime - and thousands of Christians today still believe that. Just because America's doesn't like what Jesus said doesn't make it wrong. (And just to be clear, Jesus specifically said you CAN make an exception in the case of marital unfaithfulness, where divorce is permitted.)

- A victim should marry their rapists - Before you make claims about the Bible, it would be great if you could cite the verse those claims are coming from. There are several passages in the Bible that I could see misinterpreted this way, but I don't think any of them are either mandating marriage in this situation or referring to actual victims of rape. Like you yourself said, you have to take the verse in context. :)

- People who aren't married but are sexually active should be stoned - IF YOU HAVE MADE ANY COMMENTS ABOUT THE BIBLE BEING OUT-DATED, PLEASE READ THIS! THERE IS A *HUGE* DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CERTAIN OLD TESTAMENT LAWS, WHICH WERE INTENDED AS SPECIFIC RULES FOR THE ISRAELITE NATION, AND NEW TESTAMENT LAWS, INTENDED AS RULES FOR GOD'S NEW, GLOBAL CHURCH. Now don't get me wrong here - not all Old Testament laws are out of date. The command to not murder certainly hasn't been removed, nor has the command for us to not worship idols or not commit adultery. However, the SPECIFIC PUNISHMENTS for these sins were meant to apply to Israel, not the modern day. That doesn't mean they are outdated - I think some of our government leaders could stand to learn from the Israelite government. However, God definitely does not want us carrying out jobs that belonged to Israel's government.

And answering why God said it was wrong in the first place, God dislikes these relationships for a reason. No offense to any of you Taylor Swift fans, but it was never God's design for people to have "casual" relations with one another and then break up after a few weeks. Ever wonder why some of Taylor's songs are so sad, or why divorces are such a difficult time for people? Break-ups are NOT God's intent, and for good reason! Solid marriages bring lasting joy and friendship to the people involved, not fleeting pleasure following by guilt and bitterness. And no hate or condemnation intended to anyone - this is my interpretation of the Bible and my opinion, and God is gracious to forgive anyone who repents . :)

Eating shellfish, wearing mixed fabrics, and even getting haircuts is a sin - I'm not sure if you've heard of Samson, but this is basically where these commands come from. Certain people (like Samson) could, OF THEIR OWN FREE WILL, choose to become a "Nazirite" in order to demonstrate their dedication to God. This was a lot like being a monk - you chose to follow certain rules and set yourself apart to honor God. Oh, and wearing mixed fabrics is just a big misunderstanding of one of Jesus's analogies about not mixing old things (old sin patterns) with new commitments (to Christ.) And Jesus himself expressly said it was an analogy. :D

It was unclean to eat pork because that pigs were low end or dirty - Look at the big screaming capital letters earlier. This was an OLD TESTAMENT law that set Israel apart from other nations. Also, remember that there were no sinks or wipes or even a basic understanding of germs in those days. Several of God's commands (like cleansing yourself after touching dead things) were meant simply to express His care and protect his people from diseases.

I know this was a really long post, and I apologize for all of the rambling. However, when people say that the loving father who died for the world says things He doesn't mean or is a plain liar, I just can't help but defend what I believe. :)

P.S. By the way, just to be clear, I fully agree with everything you said about loving people. Jesus commanded one of His prophets to marry a prostitute to demonstrate His love for His people even though they were unfaithful to Him, and He saved an adulterous woman from the death the law condemned her to die. However, after He did this, He always said "go and sin no more." There's forgiveness in Christ, and He wants us to love all sinners, no mater how bad they are. However, he does not want us to love the sins themselves. :)

Thanks for reading. Hope you're not offended - or asleep! xD

message 297: by Joy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Joy @Elizabeth, I think you brought up a good point and one that is often used against the Leviticus 20:13 argument. And you are right, SOME (not all - see the Ten Commandments) Old Testament Laws that "Jesus did not say" were meant to be enforced in the Israelite government, not the modern, global church. However, we know that God's opinion of gay rights was not limited to Israel only because he clearly says it again in Romans 1:24-27: "Therefore God gave them [those who reject the gospel] up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error." Now I know this verse is offensive to many people, and I'm quoting it not because I hate anyone who is gay or want to hurt or mock them - I just want true Christians to know what the Bible says before they make claims that God is totally OK with gay marriage. After all, if Christians contradict the Bible, then how will unbelievers believe that God is "the Truth" and that there is only one way to follow Him?

And for the record, I have no problems with Catholics - I think there are some really cool things about Catholic churches that I wish Protestant churches did more often. And I do get why you believe in a literal interpretation of the Eucharist... if in doubt, I would agree the literal translation of the Bible is usually the best one! :)

P.S. Someone should make forums where theology nerds can debate about all this stuff without annoying anyone else... that would be so cool :D

Lol yes the epilogue xDD But I actually liked the HP epilogue, it was sweet. It also helped those fan fiction writers write stories about their kids (aka me) xD I really want the HoO series to have an epilogue, but unfortunately Uncle Rick wants to be an even bigger troll and not write one :( "the readers imagination" he said...
