Yvonne Mae I hadn't read the book yet despite my almost a year in waiting for it since there is still not a single copy here in the philippines. But i read the plot (spoiler xD) so it took me by SURPRISE when i realized dt Nico was homo! I mean, i still cant call him that since homo's r only homo's wen dey admit it n Nico is still lyk 50/50 over his sexuality. But what unnerved me was that I COMPLETELY DID NOT SEE IT COMING!!!
I had been inlove with Nico since titan's curse and he had been my favorite PJ character evah! I named our dog after him and developed a crush to any guy with a name NICO bcoz that name had been essentially a part of my life. So, discovering he was *slightly gay shook the world out of me. I admit, i kinda lost like half of my enthusiasm in reading the book but then i wanted 2 read posts from fan's world-wide 2 know what r they're perceptions on Nico being homo n I FEEL SO ASHAMED that, just knowing he had turned homo made me lose like 1/3 of my devotion 2 him when here u are, all supporting n acknowledging him for what he is and that completely shamed me! I hav nothing against homo's , its just so disturbing 2 know Nico wud b 2 after not having any obvious hints that he is. But IM SO SOOOOORY NICO BBY, i misjudged you. Don't worry, through all these fans support, I STILL LOVE YOU FOREVER AND I ALWAYS WILL!! I'm so sooory too Mr. Riordan, i judged ur buk unfairly though i wish you could understand my perceptions. I love NIco toooo much 2 see him be...u know. But WTH, u still rock n I WILL FOREVER LOVE NICO DI ANGELO!! Mor power!

I wouldn't say it didn't have anything to do with the plot, I mean. Look, Nico needed so motivation as to why he'd willingly lead the seven to Epirus. Howcome he forgave Percy even though he blames him for his sisters death. And why he saved him that very scene he finds out. Yes I was just pulling out scenes from the book, but Rick put them there to explain why Nico having a crush on Percy was relevant.
I'd say Rick gave us reason to why this was relevant and also created a killer scene.
Remember what Cupid said? "But at least you've faced it now. That's the only way to conquer me." And that is absolutely true. Besides I don't understand why him being gay should matter so much. That wasn't the only part of the scene so I don't understand why everyone focus's on it.
Being gay is a thing that exists in the real world so why shouldn't exist in the PJO world? I get that some parents might disapprove of it, and that might create a hassle. But I'm willing to bet, that there are some kids out there reading it and silently praying thank you's to Rick Riordan for a character they can associate with.
So really while I can understand why you'd be upset with this. All your reasons are weak and who says you can't always just skim that part and ignore the fact that Nico may/or may not be [because it never said for certain] gay.

Martina Grace wrote: "Umm... I really don't know what to say about this, but I thought these books were for 9-12 year-olds."

Thats the reading level. Not necessarily the age level the books are for, if you dont agree with it dont read the next book, and btw my friends and I are 16 and 17 and we LOVE these books so just because the cover says one thing it doesnt mean others cant read it and enjoy it.

Elizabeth K. Here's the thing I don't get - why do people think having a gay character is inappropriate for a children's book? This may shock you, but just like there are gay adults, there are gay children, too. Because they're born that way. Some of them may not know they're gay yet. But a lot of them do. I have a gay friend who says he knew he was gay since he was about five years old.

If you're one of those prejudiced people who are homophobic and just don't like gay people, well, fine, I don't agree with you, but whatever, I can see why you would find it in appropriate. What I don't get are people who claim to be "okay" with gay people, but think that gay people should not be in a kids' book.

Why? There are straight people, and straight romances, in these books. The problem seems to be that people find being gay "inappropriate." Even people who claim to be pro-gay. Why? Look, I am straight, and I had my first crush on a boy when I was in the first grade. Did I have sexual feelings for him? Of course not, I was six. I didn't have sexual feelings at all. But I thought the boy was cute and I had a crush on him.

It's the same for gay people. That's probably how my gay friend knew he was gay, even at the age of 5 - like me, he probably had a crush on a cute boy. Again, were there sexual feelings involved? Of course not. He was 5.

So I really don't understand why people would be okay with, say, Nico having a crush on Annabeth, but think that him having a crush on Percy is not "appropriate" for children. It literally makes no sense to me.

Also, as others have pointed out, it's actually very "Greek." I also read Song of Achilles a few months ago (and totally loved it) and when Nico's feelings for Percy were shown to have been born out of this kind of hero-worship, I thought, wow, that's so Ancient Greek. It reminded me a lot of how Patroclus feels about Achilles in Song of Achilles. It seems totally natural to me that you start out admiring someone for being such a great hero, and then that admiration turning into romantic feelings.

I'm just so beyond happy that Rick included a gay character in his books. I didn't see it coming, but there was definitely a feeling of 'Wow, that makes total sense,' for me.

The only people that I think are maybe a little justified in being upset are the female fans who had crushes on Nico themselves! :P I have to admit, if Leo had turned out to be gay, I might've been a little sad. Cuz I love him :D

Martina I understand why some people dont like this but I think its adorable. Nico is one of my favorite characters and I dont think its wrong for Rick to do this either. He never even came out and said openly that Nico was gay it was just implied, and if youre to immature to accept it grow up and dont read the next book.

Marina I was really suprised.... but I was more disapointed because I had this giant book character crush on him...

Kristen Jasmine wrote: "Not reading the last book because of Nico's little "episode". This is inappropriate, and I will have nothing to do with an author who supports gay rights. This is violating, and horrifying."
Hey being gay is not a bad thing. I dont care whether you find it bad or disturbing you chose to read the series and are negatively judging it because of Nico's sexuality? Really? You're kidding me right? If you hate gays please move on and dont negatively write about this book. I thought it was excellent even if it was a plot twist. Please do refrain from commenting negatively about this book and author. He doesnt have to believe in what you believe in. Overall shut the hell up and read another series where you WON'T complain about a characters sexuality. Good day to you.

Eric Rick made Nico gay. Wow. I always wondered if he was going write a gay character.

I'm glad the book sympathized with him though Jason. We need to teach kids it's okay to be gay.

Horrifying? LOL. "OMG THE EVIL AUTHOR IS RESPECTING PEOPLE FOR THEIR SEXUALITY. IT'S THE APOCALPSE"

Lani I actually did see it coming and I was really happy about it. Nico has always been my favorite character and him bring gay does not change anything.

Amanda Riffe While I understand some parents concern, it shouldn't deter you from Ricks books. I think it was a bold move and he's a smart person. He KNEW there'd be haters. He KNEW there'd be some disgust. But he's got guts to plot twist it like that. At first I too was wondering why he's put it in a kids book (I'm 18), but then I sat and thought about it for a minute and here's my conclusions.
1. Percy Jackson was born from the concept of being accepted. Rick wrote the books for his kids who had ADD and ADHD to assure them that there'd always be a place for them, always people who would support them. Since the first books, there have been signs of it elsewhere. Hazel's a good example. The school kids teased her because she was a minority race.
2. He likes to expose the issues of society. Nature, like how humans are polluting the air and deforesting our forests, and acceptance, so why not tackle the gay rights issue too?
3. He's recreating Ancient Greece. They were known for their homosexuality. It's only logical that he would put a Demi-God who's not entirely straight in a story based on Ancient Greece.
4. Nico is a character we know and love. He's so tortured and terribly confused, but he's changed a heck of a lot since book three. If we've grown to love this fictional character, why would we think of him as any different now that we know a small part of who he is?
5. This is a true test, I think. A challenge, a dare. Again, Rick Riordans smart. He knew this would cause controversy. If you stick with it, the more power to you because you accept his ideas as a writer, you respect his views, his opinions. You are a truly loyal fan.
This is why I plan to stick with it. I think it's great that he made Nico different, that he put that out there knowing he'd lose a few fans, not caring that he will because he did what he felt he had to do to continue this concept of acceptance and support.

message 64: by David (new)

David Summerville I think it was hinted in the Son Of Neptune By nico not telling Percy who he was because then he had a chance. But I like having that twist because now its not just powerful people. it adds a weakness for them and i think It will come back and play a big part in it.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

OMG This got me so surprised! I was so shocked. I really didn't see it coming. I think that it was nice of Rick to put it there and it completely made sense once I read it. How could Nico NOT have been gay? Now that I think about it, there were many clues here and there. My only problem is that I had a major HUGE book crush on Nico and now that I know he's gay, it makes me sad and crushes all dreams I had of Nico and myself (which would never come true anyway. Still, a girl can't dream?) I still think it was nice despite my massive crush. I'm as heartbroken as Nico :( Whats even more sad is the fact that Percy will never return his feelings. It makes me feel for Nico. I still love him <33 Also what makes me even MORE sad is that this might mean he's going to die. I don't think Rick is going to keep him in the story as a heartbroken person so maybe he'll just kill him? ARGHHH NOOO I DON'T WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT!! NOT MY NICO <333 Oh god, that's one character that I can't be with. At least Leo isn't gay, I don't think I would live anymore xD (Btw, Leo and Calypso? Nice!) Not that I have anything against gays its just that my dreams.. Crushed Dx Oh, Nico :(

Jessica This is ridiculous. Let me start out by saying I am a conservative voter, and I'll keep any other opinions to myself. But what do you mean, how can we explain this to your children? The "children" reading this book (I'm 29, myself) already know that gay is out there. So how about explaining that people, like Nico, are different? What you teach from there is up to you- teach your children that it's against the teaching of the Bible, or teach your children that families are different. Teach your children that Jesus extended his love to everyone, and so will we. Heck, if you need to, teacher your children that Nico is going to burn straight in Hades for these feelings. Whatever helps you sleep at night. But wake up, friends. The gay is here to stay. This country is RIPPED apart about gay rights right now. Aren't you having this conversation already? And, come on, really, don't you think there are confused 5th-college age students that are reading this book and saying THANK GOD SOMEONE FEELS THE SAME WAY I DO. The suicide rate for young homosexuals is ALARMING. So instead of quitting a fantastic, educational, and heroic story because ONE character is :::gasp::: GAY...then why don't you start it as a sounding board to talk to your child? Did this confuse them? Well, TALK to them. TELL them what your family believes. Because it's going to be a hell of a lot more confusing when they walk in on two gay kids kissing in the middle school locker rooms and you, as their parent, have prepared them in NO WAY for that scenario. Whether you condone homosexuality or not- that doesn't change the fact that it's here to stay. So, yes, Rick Riodan tackled it in a classy, non-sexual manner. Isn't it time we did the same?

Actually the selected age group I think is technically young adults so I don't see a problem with it.

Amanda Riffe Oh, and If Nico dies, which is very plausible, he had better go out in a blaze of glory, nothing less. He's a hero.

Emerald Dean Diana wrote: "No he can't be gay, Why Rick!!!! I been in love with Nico since I was twelve. *Crying in a corner*"

Emerald Dean Well this chapter was certainly shocking! Honestly, I didn't see this coming. I've never liked Jason, and I kinda still don't. But I don't agree this is the bravest thing. (I assume you all read that part I'm talking about, so I won't go into detail.) I can't say I'm happy about it either, but before anyone can get upset with me about my previous comment let me explain why I feel this way...
Nico, aside from Percy, has always been my favorite! I just love his character. It is unpredictable and so mysterious. I loved how the others are scared of him, and how he has a past that they don't know about. (We as readers feel a little proud to the fact that we know more than them... at least I felt this way.);) Honestly, I wish he had remained that way. I didn't want to understand why he was the way he is. I pushed it off as simply the pain he feels from his loss and being an outcast. Also, it isn't that I hate gay people! I do not at all, but I don't support it either.... It is only that I am so attached to this character, Nico. As I said before, it was a shock to me. I did not see this coming. I love this character too much to see this happen to him...
On a completely different note. And I am biased. I wish Nico had more of a chance to show his awesome powers. He is just as powerful as Jason and Percy. I want him to be put on the pedestal with those two.

Catherine Hudson I just read this scene and I must say I'm disappointed. I honestly have nothing against gays. My best friend is gay and I love him and support him for it! My problem more arises from the fact that it seems out of character to me. Nico's possible crush on Annabeth wasn't really brought up or explored in previous books, and I kind of liked the fact that Nico was the only one who wasn't caught up in love or love triangles like all of the others. I had always assumed that Nico looked up to Percy and just saw him as an older brother. Adding this element to the House of Hades just seems unnecessary. It doesn't really add much to the plot and I feel that Mr. Riordan only added it to introduce the concept to younger readers while also showing off how diverse his characters are. And although these actions are admirable, it still doesn't seem to fit with Nico's character.

message 73: by Erica (new) - added it

Erica Yeah, it just popped out of nowhere. When I read about Favonius I thought, "Oh, there you go, gay fans. Rick's little nod to you guys. After all, he can't make an important character gay."
Then: "Wait, Nico? What?"

Ramona Catherine wrote: "I just read this scene and I must say I'm disappointed. I honestly have nothing against gays. My best friend is gay and I love him and support him for it! My problem more arises from the fact that ..."

Well no, it kinda does. I don't disagree with you (that much) but I do think that Nico being gay suits his character and adds to the plot.

I don't see how "being gay" doesn't fit his character, anyways it not supposed to "fit" it, it's supposed to add to it. Nico's supposed to be the outcast kid. Son of Hades, from a different generation and all that jazz. Him being gay adds even more of the outcast sense. So it does "fit".

Then, in the actual scene itself we see Cupid taunting him and saying "Tell him the real reason you left Camp Half-Blood" In the Last Olympian we get the whole gist that Nico was finally getting accepted and he even had a cabin and all. So I don't really think the campers would start treating him like an misfit (again). But Nico still left, and him being gay was the reason why. That's pretty solid reasoning, and it lets us understand Nico's character a bit more. Plus it "fits".

Plot-wise I'd say Rick made it work very well, it went with the plot, they needed something to help defeat monsters, plus a spot where Reyna could find the note. He chose Diocletian's sphere. Then he needed a way to defeat Cupid, in a way it'd make sense. And having Nico admit his feelings was a good way to do it. Read what Cupid had said. "At least you've faced it. That's the only way to defeat me." Now tell me that doesn't make sense. Besides creating a killer scene and accomplishing many other plot-relevant things. He also created awareness about gays. Every scene doesn't have to be part of the sevens' story to be plot relevant.

Besides I don't see how he's in the midst of a love triangle. To have a love triangle you need one character to like two people or vice-versa. This to me seems more like a love angle, Nico harboring unrequited love for our Perseus Jackson, whereas he and Annabeth are deeply in-love, practically soulmates. It's not a love story, it's a schoolboy crush gone horribly wrong.

I'm sorry if this sounded rude or offended you in anyway but this is why I think Nico being gay and stuff added to the plot and his character, among other things *cough cough* love triangles.

Why does it matter if he's gay/bi? He's still the same person. Please do not judge others by their sexuality or you are just as bad as the homophobes that you claim not to be. Why can't a character with cool powers be gay/bi? It's not like it diminishes his power in any way, he's still awesome.

RR isn't telling everyone to be gay. He is trying to tell kids out there who ARE struggling with their sexuality that they are not alone. He is trying to help them accept themselves. Straight kids reading about someone not straight won't make them gay, just like gay/bi/etc kids reading about straight kids won't make them straight. So really, why is this such a big deal to you?

Georgia I kind of suspected for a while, but he always used to blush whenever a girl touched him, so I kind of gave up the theory.

The closest Disney movie with bestiality would probably be Beauty and the Beast...but the Beast is really a human placed under a curse so that doesn't really count.

Laurel Too bad Reyna and Nico can't hook up...

Ariel Well, I mean, if Nico was bisexual… But there's nothing yet to suggest that. So far Nico has only said that he liked guys (one guy in particular).

OH MAN I really need Nico to have a happy ending!!!!!!! That would be awesome if he he found another guy, but, if he does, my guess is that it would be a new character Rick introduces. Maybe Nico meets him while returning the statue to Camp!

And hm… It would be really convenient for Nico and Reyna to fall for each other...

Laurel Who's that demigod that's the son of Iris? Butch, I think? Maybe him and Nico...

Ariel XD I totally forgot about him! It's a possibility… but I just couldn't imagine him and Nico together. XD

I think Nico really needs someone who will help him open up, and feel more sure about himself. Like (and I heard someone else say this first but I can't remember where or who, SORRY) the characters Alec and Magnus from Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments. The character might not have to be so silly and outrageous, but he should be able to help Nico come out of his shell like the confident Magnus did for Alec.

I will still read the books. For I am a Percy Jackson fan.

I still like Nico. I don't care what you think

I don't really think this goes with his personality, but remember line above.

I will most likely ignore this in fan fiction stories that I write.

Don't be an idiot and stop reading the books, they are all amazing.

Gloria Ok wow I made an account just to comment on this book. So I have been a percy Jackson fan for a while and I loved the heros of Olympus... I mean I bought all the books so yeah, im a pretty big fan. I enjoy rick's clean humor and overall just a clean friendly funny book series. but when this book came out, of course I went to go buy it the day it came out! but I just got to the part about nico...and well I wasn't happy. I mean it was a big surprise, and I don't really agree with the topic. I mean I had no warning of this, and I if I had known this was in the books I wouldn't have boughten it...now im stuck with this book, I might just give it away...I just feel accward having it in my room, I mean I don't really like to read books were the author involves gay characters...I mean hey I don't really care, but I mean it was such a surprise and not like how he normally write, I just was downright disappointed. I think it seemed forced, too sudden, like it was just added on the spot...I mean I love his books, but like I said I don't like owning books like that...so I don't think I will buy the last book when it comes out next year...I might borrow it from a friend just to see whats going on with the other charcters...(leo is my favorite) but I really lost some respect in rick... I mean I am a cristian and I feel like most everyone thought it was a great plot twist and nico being gay was a great addition to the story....I don't agree... :( I mean it seems as if everyone thinks that that is alright nowadays...what happened to this world I mean...are there any Christians out there still? lol sorry im ranting arnt I? well anyways I liked the book, but the part about nico just made me wait a few days till I finished the book, and I don't think im as big of a fan of rick's books any more...I am just slightly grossed out...and im 15...

Ariel Gloria wrote: "Ok wow I made an account just to comment on this book. So I have been a percy Jackson fan for a while and I loved the heros of Olympus... I mean I bought all the books so yeah, im a pretty big fan...."

So, wait. You say you don't care, but it still bugs you? It sounds as if you're not okay with it at all.

And also, it's not like Rick even explained it in detail, all he did was mention it. He goes more into detail with his heterosexual relationships than with Nico and his homosexuality. It's just like saying a girl has a crush on a guy. Kids learn about girls and guys liking each other from a very young age. How is this different?

This is my opinion. I hope you respect it, and I do respect yours, I just wanted to get my point out.

Nico and Leo are hands down my favourite characters in this series. Nico especially. You could say, he's my favourite male character out of any book i've ever read.
Does being gay change anything or change how i think of him as a character? NO! In fact, if anything, i like his character even more. It developed sooo much in House of Hades.
But man, I'm glad RR decided to bring a character like him into the series. Oh, and people whining about how this not age appropriate....-.- Kids know 10 times more than you think. Plus, i don't know if anyone has MISSED these things but these books have some mature content in them.....(Just no graphic sex/violence or Language). I mean, they ARE in the young adult section at all the libraries i've be to.
OH AND WHY THE HELL WAS THERE NO POV FOR NICO??!!! *goes and slouches in the corner*

Why would you lose respect for an author who is actively trying to promote awareness for a cause that helps thousands of people a year and even saves lives?

And what does being Christian have to do with it? I know Christians that are perfectly fine with gay rights and support it. If it's because of the Bible, you would know that there are hundreds of different interpretations for the Bible.

As for my opinion, I loved how he included it; it makes me respect him even more, especially since he knew that it would cause controversy (like on this website) and did it anyways. Props to you, Rick Riordan, for having balls.

Note that what this person just said is pretty much-
"I will have nothing to do with an author who supports... rights." That's right. He's a bad guy for supporting equality, what America is founded on. ?????

Yahmbri Honestly, having this happen was one of the highlights. I couldn't stop thinking about it, I wanted to tell everyone. I know someone that's gay, and when I read this, I was like 'I can relate!' because when I was told it was out of the blue. The more I thought about Nico being gay, the more it made sense.

I'm happy the way Rick addressed it, with Nico and Jason. Jason's all like 'okay, I'm cool with it, it's a little weird, but you're still my friend'.

Some people embrace the gay community, some pretend it doesn't exist, others fight against it. I'm happy that other people are cool with this thing. I know some people are going to hate it, I know personally people that are against it, I know there are going to be a lot of angry girls out there.

We all have our own opinions.
So thank you, Rick.
I tip my hat to you.
