I have the exact same problem. Although I love the fact that RR is being so proactive about teaching kids gay rights and stuff I did have a huge fangirl crush on Nico.

Thank you for posting this! I've already viewed Rick Riordan as one of the best children/young adult authors ever, but this just reaffirms it.

Nico walked for another fifty yards before answering. “It hasn’t been easy, you know. Having only the dead for company. Knowing that I’ll never be accepted by the living. Only the dead respect me, and they only do that out of fear.”
“You could be accepted,” I said. “You could have friends at camp.”
He stared at me. “Do you really believe that, Percy?”

Cecerose, that was beautiful. I honestly couldn't have said it better myself.
To me, this actually explains so much about Nico. I totally didn't see it coming, but when it was revealed, I looked back and saw hints and clues of it everywhere. It makes sense. It explains a lot of his behavior and why he's always distancing himself, why he thinks he'll never belong anywhere, why he feels even more isolated and different from everyone else.
I thought the way Rick revealed it was also so beautifully written. You thought you knew what was going on, but then he breaks it to you in a way that's not confusing, a double blow, first that he's gay, second that he loves Percy. I personally figured it out when Jason remembered Favonius asking him, Are you shocked?, and I literally clapped my hand over my mouth and gasped, lol. I have never done that. I never had any particular feelings towards Jason, but in this book he seemed to gain more character and personality, and they way he handled this reveal was just amazing. I love him for it.
Everything Cupid said about love, and the way Rick portrayed Cupid, was actually very (surprisingly) deep and mercilessly honest. I loved that whole chapter.
But it's also tragic and heartbreaking and I just want to cry because we know Percy and Annabeth are so in love. I just really hope this isn't setting Nico up to die in the next book. I don't want him to become just another gay character who dies :(

Thank you. I looked over the faq but somehow missed it. And Avalon, thank you for that perspective. I never thought that he may not be a full on gay (or even straight) but only be attracted to Percy with no other implications on his future sexuality. Of course, there is _nothing wrong_ with him being gay, it is just that I had not thought of this viewpoint.
Also guys, GOOGLE KINSEY SCALE. It is quite interesting. And I would like to mention this fanfiction on Nico's new revelation in HoH - http://archiveofourown.org/works/1001...
Read the story in full view form and not chapter by chapter. That simplifies the whole stupid chapter-organization and you can see all the comments in one place too. Do not forget to thank the author if you like the story. It has some mindblowing poems.

Uh . . . I don't think he's supporting it cause Nico's always been an outcast and making him gay is almost saying . . . gays are outcasts. Not saying I, ya know, agree with that or anything, just . . .

I really don't think Riordan said anything about himself supporting gays in any way, but Nico was always an outcast in the books and making him gay might imply that he thinks that gays are outcasts. And I'm not saying I agree with this or anything, but A. Don't hate gays. It's not their fault, and B. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Because there's still so much hatred in society (like the example you just replied to) the sad thing is most, if not all, gay children are outcasts.

And Percy has tried so many times to reach out to Nico and be a good friend. Nico always pushed him away.
Percy always tries to do right by people, but he's touched a lot of people in a short period of time. He can't follow up with all of them. The fact that he is able to feel guilt and hold himself accountable for the people he's neglected is further evidence that he is not a jerk.

Most christians like you won't even read the PJ books in the first place. Opinions are like belly buttons- everyone has one, but if it's nasty, no one needs or wants to see it. Most people don't even want to see it if it's a normal belly button...

Um. No. Question: Have you read the past books? Aw wait looks like you have. Now take your hippocratic attitude and just stop. I AM A CHRISTIAN. I actually READ the entire bible. And in the percy jackson series there are gods. plural. and there is also killing.
Now what is worse in the bible. Worshiping more than one god and killing or being gay?
Yeah makes you think right?
On top of it all you have this outrageous opinion and you havent even read the book. (btw this is half a chapter. there is a abnormally large amount of chapters in this book so as you can see this topic doesnt even cover that much room)
Third of all. its not completely against the bible. My preacher once said "god didnt write the bible, so while we should follow it as a guideline, strict adherence might lead readers to miss the point. You should love god, and god loves you. God loves us all".
ALL. Including children gay or strait. so please before you look at this comment and blow it off because it disagrees with your point of view at least THINK about my points.

I know Corinthians 6 9-10. And it applies to men who actively participate in sex.
new point- nico's gay but it doesnt mean he wants to screw all the guys?! HES 14.
Honestly I belive it is ok to be gay. Im talking about people who are born gay (like nico is in the book). The dont WANT it. they dont CHOOSE it. they cant HELP it. and to ostracize such a person is cruel and simply not what Christianity and god is all about.

same on my side. Sorry im so passionete about people being anti-nico. Im fine if you dont like him, im fine if you feel uncomfortable reading the books, I just wasnt fine with the fact you completly went anti rick and anti pj books on us
one of my good friends is a total christian. and she has been just mentally beating herself up to the point of tear because shes gay and she doesnt want to be because she "knows its wrong". its not something you just can or can not be though. and the other day she started to talk to her mom about it. her mother walked out on her (this week this happened). My friend currently is living by herself with her dad who doesnt want her- so she has no idea where to live.
its THIS kinda thing that leads me to be sensitive to most Christians STRICT-ADHERENCE to that Corinthians verse.

That's your right. Doesn't effect anybody but you. But don't pretend you're not dying to find out how they defeat Gaea.

Chayse, how old is your friend? I've heard that what you describe is quite common. That there are actually a lot of homeless teenagers that have been kicked out of their homes for being gay. It's common enough that there are organizations that help gay teenagers through these situations. She should do some research, and talk to a councilor for help finding the right resources. I hope she can find a better home life. Nobody should have to live with a parent that does not love them unconditionally.

Kaleb im srry but im not gay so that one line doesnt apply to me. *still saveeedddd* *still supporrt ittt*
and listen. in the SAME statement it says "neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers" will also go to heaven
Kaleb honestly only 5 words in the entire bible refer to gayness. 5

greek orthadox.
and honestly what denomination says that god wrote the bible. His followers and belivers did....

thank you for being nice- (honestly i am too and im sorry were discussing not fighting right? thats how im viewing it anyways moving on)
anyways that wasnt the point. the point was look at my friend. she obviously doesnt want that. so being gay just cant be one of those sins like killing or theivery in which you choose right from wrong

sorry i was a bit rude in the whole *still saaveed* thing. i ment that those 5 lines dont apply to people who support gayness, only those who activially participate in men/men sex. (it doesnt even apply to women. technically it doesnt even apply to gayness just sex)

You know, I may be mistaken but I'm pretty sure the bible talks about forgiveness quite a bit too. So you love the lord enough to hate someone for their sins, but not enough to forgive someone's sins? What does the bible say you're supposed to do about others' sins anyway? If you think you're not supposed to be gay, than don't. But what are you supposed to do about others? I'm inclined to think that Jesus said to forgive them.
Anyway, it doesn't matter. It's just a book. You can refuse to read on. You're only denying yourself; not saving anybody, not changing anything, not effecting anything at all.
If that's how you feel. That's your prerogative.

lol who could hate poor nico!
and no idea are u friends with them? try de-friending them or something im new so idk

*sigh* i want too but kaleb please
A) not hate rick or the series because of ONE plot development
B) burn the books *le cringe*
C) just not read house of hades because of this. Like i said in my defence. I would still be saved (if i ask for forgiveness for my sins and you know your christan yadiyada). Supporting or not supporting isnt against the bible, and reading a book in which a character does something against your religion isnt against the bible too. You could still read the books, just like you did before when things against the bible were gods and killing and what not. (still much worse than being gay in the bible. gayness is compared to having the same wrongness as theivery. killing+gods trumps theivery)

In short. I respect your view. Agree to dissagree on that.
again. Please dont hate the series/ not read because of this.
cinderella and other disney movies have magic in it. we have all still watched those. its the same thing with house of hades
