Oh, keep at it! I felt the same when I began reading it, but I persevered and now it is amongst my favourites. Something I found useful was to look at what Jennifer and co had to say about it back in 2011. That clued me in on how the structure worked, and from then on I found it just got better and better. Here's the link if you want to go that way: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/firsttuesday...

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Oh I get how the structure works and such I'm just not finding the individual stories particularly interesting by themselves, and the links from one story to the other seem fairly flimsy.

A couple of the stories are good Liam. That was what bothered me the most about the book - the inconsistency of my interest in each story.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Yes, there were some I could have had more of, definitely. At the expense of others, perhaps

I seem to remember it was a dystopian story towards the end which I liked best. Probably the one about Sonmi. Sadly I did not review it so I am not sure.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I enjoyed the bit with the reporter lady most thus far, onto the english publisher guy now.

Just having real trouble keeping my interest.

message 14161: by Ryan (new)

Ryan It works its way to post-apocalyptic via dystopian. Those two are definitely the best.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Yes i definitely liked Luisa Rey and Tim Cavendish the best

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments What I do like about David Mitchell's novels is that the same characters keep popping up in different novels. I found a character map somewhere on the web. I still have one to read.....

I know! And then you read the reviews and some people say it wasn't creepy at all. We must all have different levels of creep awareness:)

Pretty much, and now that I've reached the midpoint and I know that I have to go through all the settings/characters that I wasn't interested in all over again, my will to continue is waning heavily.

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments I'm in a phase of re-reading old classic books which is great because I can usually get them free for my kindle from Amazon. Right now I'm reading H G Wells, "The War of the Worlds"
The science of the time is interesting. Back then I think they thought it was quite possible there was intelligent life living on Mars. I'm mildly enjoying the read.

I'll be interested in your thoughts after you've finished Odette:)

message 14181: by Tim (new)

Tim Edison I am reading The Man With the Golden Arm which I am enjoying but having trouble getting through. I like Nelson Algren but sometimes I find his style a little slow and ponderous.

Incidentally, this book was made into a film in the 1950's for which Frank Sinatra won an Acadamy Award.

Veronica ⭐️ | 2384 comments Just starting on The Chocolate Promise by Josephine Moon

And here is a bit of trivia from Josephine herself:
TRIVIA: My second novel, The Chocolate Promise / Apothecary was actually called The Chocolate Apothecary, right up to a few months before going to print. At that time, some concerns were raised as to the familiarity of the word 'apothecary' in Australia. When I began quizzing people, more often than not, they either didn't know what it meant and/or couldn't pronounce it. We decided, therefore, to change the title for Australia/NZ to 'The Chocolate Promise' and keep it as 'The Chocolate Apothecary' in the UK, where that word is well known. I happen to love both titles, so it's great to see it in both forms :)

I have no idea what Apothecary means of how to pronounce it so it's off to google I go.

Maybe it's because I am English that I know what it means! I think if you read a lot of historical fiction or the older classics you will meet it
It's sad that the publishers thought they had to dumb it down for the Australian market though. As you say it is easy to google it:)

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments I know what Apothecary means and I don't believe they should have changed the name of the book just on the presumption that people in Australia might not know! That's such an insult. I mean, even if you don't know, what's wrong with looking the word up and learning something new? I'm sure that the chocolate all over the cover would be inducement enough.
Heavens, Harry Potter would have used words far more perplexing to many!

To be honest, I would have been more drawn to a book with that original title...the connotations being far more promising.

As an Aussie I was familiar with the word and like others think it sounds more interesting. Chocolate promise sounds more chick lit, which the book is. But I'd have preferred the original instead of being dumbed down.

I agree with all of you. I haven't read the book yet and one reason is that the title doesn't grab me, but the Chocolate Apothecary would have piqued my interest.

I smiled at the bit that said the word is widely known in England. I doubt it is any more widely known there than Australia. It really isn't in modern usage at all.
