Is this one a biography Brenda..or, after reading your review, it's more like a memoir?

I'm having a very international reading experience at the moment. As well as listening to (and enjoying) Sister of My Heart by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, which is set in Calcutta (albeit narrated in a mostly American accent!), I'm also reading A Family in Paris: Stories of Food, Life and Adventure by Jane Paech which is a bit like a diary-cum-scrapbook of the author's time spent living with her family in Paris when her husband relocated for work. Perfect for Paris tragics (of which I suspect I am one!), the photos bring back some lovely memories of a couple of brief occasions in Paris, and the anecdotes of life in the French capital almost make me feel like I'm there! Almost!
Just started on Ghostwritten which I was sort of dreading for the volume of it, but I forgot what a pleasure David Mitchell's books are to read, I'm really enjoying it! Especially all the connections, both between the different stories and to Mitchell's other books.
Finished reading : Beautiful Malice by Rebecca James 5★My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
]Just finished reading White Gardenia by Belinda Alexandra which I enjoyed and found an interesting read.
Sharon wrote: "Started reading The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion"Hope you enjoy, Sharon. I read it earlier this year and loved it! I chuckled throughout it and even laughed aloud at times!! Some of the situations Don and Rosie get themselves into are very funny :-)
The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert - I have avoided it like the pest because I found her previous non fiction works rather self indulgent. But this one has been a real delight so far. The story captured me almost instantly and I am already sacrificing precious sleeping time to find out what awaits our heroine Alma Whittaker!
Yesterday I finished The Plum Tree by Ellen Marie WisemanMy review is at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm now reading Paruku The Desert Brumby by Jesse Blackadder as my 2nd new release of 2014 Aussie author challenge.

I can't believe I have gone this long and never read a book by Kate Grenville before except for
and that was some years back.
Dale wrote: "Currently readingDale, you might also like the The Secret River by Kate Grenville also, as it tells the original story of the Thornhill's arrival.
For about 6 weeks now ive been trying to read The One Plus One by one of my fave authors Jojo Moyes. Ive read 4 of her other boos loving 3 and the other was okay. This one is incredibly boring! Such a disappointment. Im only persisting 1. Because it was sent to me by the publisher for review 2. Because I cant tell if its just the book thats the issue or that im in a reading slump in general. Im getting the feeling that Ms Moyes is either hot or cold (ive had a DNF on one of her other books due to boredom) and not much in between. Anyone else read this book? Love to hear what you thought of it.

Thanks, Julie. I noticed it was a sequel but certainly didn't need the first one to follow the story but might still give it a go at some stage.

Dale I just noticed book two of this series The Lieutenant by Kate Grenville is on sale for $4.75 on Booktopia sale.....FYI ;-)

This is a rather strange series - I've read The Secret River and The Lieutenant and unlike most series where the second follows on from the first, these are 2 different stories. I inadvertently read The Lieutenant first, and when I read The Secret River, I kept expecting to come across a way that it tied in with The Lieutenant, but it never did. I think that the way it is a series is that they are both about a similar kind of event - the new settlers to Australia communicating with the Aboriginal people already here and whereas The Secret River presents one approach to this (view spoiler), The Lieutenant presents another approach (view spoiler). I know Sarah Thornhill follows on from characters in The Secret River more like a regular series!
I just finished reading The Signature of All Things and found that, while it was a pleasant read, it didn't sweep me off my feet... also had some gripes with the way it was narrated. To me it's a 3.5 stars book. More of it here https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Now what to read next....
Finished On Beauty by Zadie Smith; definitely 5★. It is rip-snorting read!My review is at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Thanks Kathryn.I'm not one who likes to follow an author with another of their books so will be a while before I go and red another Kate Grenville even though I loved this one. It's just I like variety.

I'm the same, Dale - I took a year after reading my first Kate Grenville before I read my second, and I'm currently reading the second in the An Irish Country Doctor series after reading the first one around St Patrick's Day for the autumn reading challenge last year!!
Well, variety is the spice of life, and there's not normally any hurry to finish a series (although if an author is particularly prolific they may end up writing faster than I read!), so why not mix things up!
Patricia wrote: "Dale wrote: "I'm not one who likes to follow an author with another of their books so will be a while before I go and red another Kate Grenville even though I loved this one. It's just I like varie..."Really, Patricia?! I would have thought most people would space their reading of particular authors out! The only times I can remember getting through an author's books one after another are The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and the next 4 or 5 that were out at the time and the The Hunger Games series - and they were really the literary equivalent of junk food - I couldn't stop myself from keeping gorging on them at the time (especially the Harry Potter and Hunger Games series), but they weren't exactly food for the soul, or anything similar - they weren't very memorable afterwards!! Although The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series probably resembles comfort food, more than junk food - I enjoy the new book each time, but since I'm up to date with the series, I can't gorge on it any more!
Oh, and I used to read Enid Blyton one after another when I was little! She was the only author I would read for a while - good thing she was so prolific! And good thing I grew out of that quirk!
Most of the time if I read a book by an author I like, I figure spreading their books out is a good idea to make them last longer!
Patricia wrote: "I never do that, if I really enjoy a book, then I don't want to 'dilute' it's impact by reading the same author straight away...I want to enjoy the next book on it's own merits at a later date."Couldn't agree more. I actually put myself off Patricia Cornwell by reading too many of her books one after the other. Never again.
Patricia wrote: "I don't even like series'...if I know there's more than one book, then I'm put off, I don't want to have to keep reading to get to the end of the story."Snap! :)
Patricia wrote: "@Kathryn LOL - see you DO read all the books one after the other! ..."Yes, I do sometimes, but not very often!! :-) The Hunger Games in 2011 was the last time I can remember!
If you saw the list of series I'm partway through at the moment (and have been for a while now!) - many only at the point of first, second or third book in, you'd see I'm obviously not reading them back to back!! I do like to read more books by an author I've enjoyed, but I agree with you, and Vicki, that you can sicken yourself of an author.
And I think there was more choice than Enid Blyton when I was little (although probably still less than today) - I seem to remember my mother suggesting other books and me stubbornly saying that I would only read Enid Blyton books! I was always a little envious of not going to boarding school or having tuck boxes filled with all the yummy food described in her books - potted meat sandwiches always sounded intriguing - now I wonder what I (or the British) were thinking of to think that potted meat was a good idea!
Vicki wrote: "Patricia wrote: "I never do that, if I really enjoy a book, then I don't want to 'dilute' it's impact by reading the same author straight away...I want to enjoy the next book on it's own merits at ..."I did the same Vicki! I haven't been able to face reading a Patricia Cornwell book for years after overdosing - maybe in the future I'll try her again to see if I've got over it. I do read a lot of series but these days I prefer to stagger them a bit and split them up by reading other books in between.
I also grew up reading Famous Five and Secret Seven as well as a series of books set in an idyllic boarding school called the Chalet School in Austria - does anyone remember those?

Like others I read the Enid Blytons but I never ever thought boarding school sounded a good idea. I would have been horrified at the thought. Liked the Famous Five and Secret Seven but my favourites were what Katy did and What Katy did next, (read over and over) Heidi, Little Women etc. and the only horse book I ever read, Black Beauty. Also read a lot of Greek Roman and Norse myths which I adored.
Carolyn wrote: "I also grew up reading Famous Five and Secret Seven as well as a series of books set in an idyllic boarding school called the Chalet School in Austria - does anyone remember those?"Yes, I did read some of them - after I branched out from Enid Blyton - I think it is the Chalet School series by Elinor M. Brent-Dyer. I just looked them up here on GR - the first is The School at the Chalet, and I don't know how many there are, but I see no. 58 is Prefects of the Chalet School!! I can't remember how many I read, but none look terribly familiar now! But I,m almost certain it was this series - unless there's another series about a boarding school in the Tyrol!!
