Jet Lin (jetlinjet) | 2 comments Hello everyone, my name is Jet and I'm from China ;)
I study Environmental Engineering in college but I like history very much. The history of Britain and the Cold War fascinates me. I read the "A Very Short Introduction" series about Britain history by OxFord U Press and get The Cold War: A New History by John Lewis Gaddis to read.
I spend most of my spare time on reading(even gave up playing video games in order to save time to read...) and honestly I just started my reading life about half a year ago :)
I really look forward to the discussions, glad to join the group and meet you!

Katy (kathy_h) Welcome, Jet. Glad you could join us.

Here are a couple of links to threads on Britain that might interest you:

British History

British Monarchy

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how the books you mentioned should look:

The Cold War A New History by John Lewis Gaddis by John Lewis Gaddis John Lewis Gaddis

I'm not sure what book exactly that you read in the A Very Short Introduction series. That would be great if you could use the add book/author button to cite it for us.

Here are links for more information to get you started.

Not bad for the first try on citations. However, if there is no author photo you can just say no photo. Like this:

I don't have the educational background that some on here do but I love to read history books, I study the civil war mainly, I guess because I am so drawn to it, my great, great grandfather was in the confederate army. I also love to read about WW1 and WW2, my grandfather served in WW1 and my father served in WW2. But my interest is anything early American to the Spartans. I love the read about the Crusades and the Byzantine empire. Well anyway anything to do with history, I am a history nut.

I'm an American college freshman studying anthropology. So, surprise, I love to read about culture and history!

Typically, I enjoy books that are full of emotion, so I primarily read about romance, war, and tyranny but it's not uncommon for me to crack open a highly recommended book of any genre.

Feel free to shoot me a message, add me, recommend a book or whatever you please. :)

Marilyn (mbk1857) Hi, my name is Marilyn. I have taken the time to read all the rules for this history club and I must say I'm overwhelmed. I don't have a problem posting a link to a book I'm reading but the author's photo? I like to read English history, Civil War history (currently, I'm on a Jeff Shaara kick), biographies, auto-biographies, etc., though you probably couldn't tell by reading my reading list because for the past five years I've been reading romance. Yes, escapist fare totally but it was good to get away from Patton, Adams, Eisenhower, Churchill, Truman, etc., and other books designed to improve "my mind". So many of you write and sound like you've got PhD.'s and Master's etc., while I only have a lowly AA but I'm a firm believer than one's education does not necessarily end with the awarding of a sheepskin. I doubt I'll be adding any commentary of note because of your very long and specific list of rules but if it's okay with you, I'll just lurk here so I can pick up on some good book or other so I don't miss out on anything. :)

message 3024: by Katy (new)

Katy (kathy_h) Welcome, Marilyn. Glad you could join us.

If you look at some of our personal bookshelves I think you will find that we all love escapist fiction too! And we are glad to have all sorts of different people at all sorts of walks of life here on the group. And I don't have a PhD myself, but am a retired high school teacher in mathematics. So not much of a history background. But as you said, "one's education does not necessarily end with the awarding of a sheepskin."

I majored in history when I was in college (a long time ago) and managed to get a Masters Degree in it. Most of my daily interest in history these days is reading it. I once had an idea to teach it but life got in the way and I now make a living as an IT engineer in the semiconductor industry. I've been a member of GoodReads for a while now but have only recently gotten active with it.

Besides history, I also enjoy science fiction, books on public affairs and really just about anything that is engaging and a pleasure to read.

Best regards to all and looking forward to getting to know some of you.

My name is Kim and I'm from Genk, Belgium. I'm 28 years old (one week away from 29) and I work in logistics & transport (I also studied this in uni).

I just recently discovered Goodreads so I'm still getting used to the site. That's how I found this group :-)

I love History in general but I do have my favourite topics: US History, WW1, WW2, Ancient Egypt, Rennaissance Italy.

At this moment I'm reading some Russian History (The Romanovs), Maritime History (Titanic and other shipwrecks, lost franklin expedition,...), WW1.

I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you!!!

My name is John and I currently reside in MD. I just got my Master's in Education and I'm currently teaching Modern World History, hoping for a full time position to open up. I'm thinking about continuing my education in History. I've enjoyed historical topics since I was a kid, and it's great to see it evolve. I don't have a specific subject in what I enjoy most, but I'm currently really interested in the Age of Exploration and Natural History.

I'm here to chronicle what I've read and pick up some suggestions on what to read next.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

You know, Gay, we don't at the moment. It is a good idea, though.

Go ahead and put in a post in our suggestion box and we can see what we can do:

Hi! I'm Diana. I have historically (pardon the pun?) been a fiction reader. This was until I was a finalist for Jeopardy. At the live try-outs, I did well enough in the non-history categories—but flamed out so spectacularly in U.S. History that the other contestants laughed (specifically, when I said the U.S.S. Maine blew up in Baltimore. I know...now.) So I've made history my new focus—specifically American history, but I'm open to anything.

I'm currently reading American Colonies The Settling of North America, Vol. 1 by Alan Taylor by Alan Taylor Alan Taylor. Hello!
