Bryan Craig Welcome, Trina. You study very interesting topics, that is for sure. We have a Holocaust topic:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

Bohdan Pechenyak | 1 comments Greetings to each and all!

My name is Bohdan Pechenyak. I'm Ukrainian (living in the U.S. at the moment) and my interest in history is, probably, most prominent in that regard - Ukrainian history, Eastern European history, history of Europe in general, history of 20th century, two World Wars (much of which took place on Ukrainian territory, among others) and so on. But I also have interest in world history as a whole - I love learning about different cultures, including Asian, African, Native American and so on.

I am a sociologist by education, and also have graduate degrees in social work and public health. I love to read widely, and history was one of my favorite subjects since I can remember - at least middle school. Not so much the memorizing of the dates, but the stories ))). That's what history is all about, to me - the narratives, the stories, the historical truth, or at least the approximation to the truth, which is, in fact, not accessible to us in its entirety and in its full immediacy.

In terms of authors - I think Timothy Snyder is a brilliant historian of Eastern Europe. His most recent book, which I have on my reading list, is "Bloodlands" - about Eastern Europe in the vice of Hitler and Stalin. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Thank you!
Bohdan.

by Timothy Snyder

P.S. I will read the orientation and the guidelines of the group as soon as I get a chance.

Tim Lemke | 2 comments Hello all,

I'm Tim Lemke, and I am a community journalist living near Baltimore, MD.

I have a great enthusiasm for early American history and the period of the Revolutionary War, but have a renewed interest in reading about the World Wars.

In the past year, I've become interested in finding books that offer a comprehensive but readable overview of major events. Books like The Guns of August, the The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany and The Glorious Cause: The American Revolution, 1763-1789 fit that mold. So I am always looking for recommendations along these lines.

I look forward to being a part of the group. (And I could use a quick pointer on how to add book cover images.)

I still enjoy reading about these topics, but also find several other areas of history fascinating: American history (esp. late 19th - early 20th century), social history, biographies, history of science and historical true crime. I'm looking forward to the discussions here and finding many great titles to add to my "have to read" list!

Bryan Craig Hi Tim. A good start on the citations. You use bookcovers and author photos if they exist. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

My historical interests are varied, but include the following: Regional history of Illinois and the St. Louis area, Military history (particularly WWII), American history, and Roman history. I have also begun to take an interest in the Middle East, India, and East Asia. I'm open to things outside of my listed interests though since I love to learn about new things. What I love most about history is that it is embedded in our lives so much that many things we take for granted such as borders or international relations have an entire history to tell.

Whenever i travel i prefer history trips and visiting museums etc. looking into Road Scholar now.

I love reading on my IPad and have pretty much given up traditional books. Aalso LOVE audio. I am wanting to sign up for some of the Great Courses. If anyone has taken or purchased them please let me know what you think. Can t decided between the audio or the video.

Thanks

I love listening to lectures on tape (although they are no longer on "tape" in this digital age) from The Great Courses. Some I watch on DVD and some I do audio only. I guess it just depends on the course. Most Science courses I do the video and literature courses I just do the audio. The audio only makes a nice companion when I walk or run.

Westar | 2 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Cassandra, and I manage the Westar Institute profile on GoodReads. We're based in Salem, Oregon, in the United States. My coworkers and I are especially fascinated by first- and second-century religions of the Roman Empire including Second Temple Judaism and the diverse early forms of Christianity before it became a world religion. Would love book recommendations and suggested discussions on related topics!

Thanks! Happy reading!

Dominique Wilson Hi everyone. My name is Dominique. I was born in Algiers of French parents. When I was ten we escaped the civil war by migrating to Australia. Whilst interested in most genres, my favourite is historical [both fiction and non-fiction]. I am currently reading

Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome Cassandra. We have a large thread related to religions of the world and can be found at this link:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Please remember that we do not allow self-promotion of books published by any of your organization's related partners.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books you mention should look:

House of Stone A Memoir of Home, Family, and a Lost Middle East by Anthony Shadid by Anthony Shadid Anthony Shadid

Hi Jill, thanks for the welcome! Re adding books and authors - I clicked on 'add author' etc, but for some reason only the link showed on my post, not the image. What did I do wrong?

message 2845: by Jill H. (last edited Jan 10, 2014 08:28PM) (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Once you click on "add book/author", a box will show up and you will notice at the bottom two buttons that say "link" and "cover". It is defaulted to "link", so you need to click on "cover" and it will come up. Or at least it should. Let me know how it works out and we will discuss it further if you have a problem. You may also want to review the process at:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

The book you mentioned should look like this:

Hitler's Furies German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields by Wendy Lower by Wendy Lower Wendy Lower

Loren | 1 comments Hello, name is Loren. I am from the US and I live in Wisconsin. I am currently a stay-at-home dad with my one and a half year old daughter. I also work as a tutor in the afternoon with a YMCA program. I have a BS in History with minors in Geography and Secondary Education. I have hopes of returning to school to gain my Master's and PhD.

I love history for many reasons. It provides context for our present lives in such a poignant way that it almost fails for words to describe. I yearn to learn the story of how we humans came to be as we are today and how that story can inform where we may be going. I also love history for the robust discussion and argument that can arise from two or more passionate historians engage in conversation...or the robust discussion and argument that occurs in my own mind. ;)

I look forward to expanding my historical experience through this group by being exposed to different authors, topics, and opinions.

Cheers,

Loren

Merles | 1 comments My name is Merle, and I'm from Canada, Toronto. I'm on my way to university to get my B.A in criminology and pursue my long time dream of becoming an officer of the force. A large chunk of my high school and elementary education was spent learning about history that I found I very enjoyed(at one point, I even thought about becoming a history teacher, but the demand of teachers in Toronto was and is so high that it shoved me right off that course!) I'm currently very interested in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and middle eastern history as well as World War ll and the Sri Lankan war.
