Jon Johnson (jonojohnson) | 1 comments My name is Jon Johnson. I am a retired programmer. I read quite a bit of history, mostly American, mostly military. I also like the history of math and science.

Robert Hello, my name is Robert. I currently study Soviet History, Russian language and Religious Expressionism at college. I came upon this group when I joined Goodreads yesterday and it seems like a fun place to be. I have been interested in history ever since grade school and am always up for something new to learn about history.

message 2753: by David (new)

David Abraham | 14 comments Hi all.

My name is David, I live in Maryland, near Washington, DC, where I moved a few years ago to be closer to the morons we elect to national office.

Growing up, history in high school was meaningless names and dates and not one of my subjects. HOWEVER, for all that, political science and economics were my first 2 college majors. I ended up with a BA and an MA in English Literature.

I am VERY political (and numbers oriented) and I read history for pleasure and for knowledge, it is backbone of all the things I think about after all.

Recommendations for history books that intersect with my other loves -- politics / current affairs / economics -- will be highly appreciated. My favorite periods are Constitutional America and the classical period in Western Civ.

Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome Sandesh, John, Robert, David, and Terry. Thanks for responding to our invitation to introduce yourselves.

Here are a couple of topics in the HBC that you mentioned.

American History

Russian history

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

Eli | 1 comments Hello everyone, my name is Eli. To the moderators, I apologize for not posting here immediately after joining the group. It was late upon my joining (and I did not notice that this was required), and I had intended to do so soon. Still, this is no excuse for not observing the rules, and I am sorry.

I have no aptitude for brevity, nor do I enjoy talking about myself, but nonetheless I will attempt to briefly introduce myself and accurately sketch my love and fascination of history without droning or taking too long.

I have been deeply fascinated with history from a very young age, and remember being intrigued by pictures and art (often biblical and mythological allusions) as a small child, and other exposures to things of this nature spurned a curious fascination (albeit in the midst of total ignorance) with 'history', despite being unaware of the term. The past and what occurred therein (as well as humanity and civilization in general) became the target of much fascination, at about seven years old I began playing historical city-building games, and also to browse in history books and to draw pictures of cities and other things of a historical nature. This further cultivated the interest, and soon I was playing more historical games, reading more, and becoming more immersed in history as a subject. Increasingly, I began to read more and more, until recently, the consideration to pursue history as a career grew in me, and while I am still undecided (with the financial implications of this decision being shaky) I am emphatic on continuing a personal study of it for the rest of my life.

Whether I do decide to make a career of it or merely pursue it as an amateur, I have been looking for a good and lively community to follow and aid my study. So, I am thankful for this group, and excited to be a part!

Ronald Angelo Johnson | 1 comments I am delighted to be a part of the History Book Club thread. I am Ron Johnson. People in my hometown Lufkin, Texas, still refer to me by my childhood nickname. (May reveal it after we’ve known each other awhile.) I am an early American historian at Texas State University because I have questions about life that only history can answer. My preferred period is from about 1763 to 1843. Founding Brothers the Revolutionary Generation by Joseph J. Ellis by Joseph J. Ellis remains the best history book I have ever read.

Leibovich is the Chief National Correspondent at NY Magazine.Itwas a good book, but very depressing even though it's well known that money rules in Washington, DC! I was sad that this book looks further into lobbyists, which most are started when Senators or House members, people in the White House leave and start, "consulting jobs!" Lobbyist groups! One of the great things about history is the discovery that you can learn the most about today by reading about yuesterday, and the most about yesterday (late 60s early 70s) by reading about Rome and Medieval times and mid-19th century America. It all fits together.

This leaves me with a lot of time to read, and I am a big nonfiction reader (although I love a good novel, too.) I belong to a local book group that reads nonfiction of many kinds--we meet about once a month to discuss our books, but I do a lot on my own, too. Lately I've been on a WW II kick. I read The Winds of War (The Henry Family, #1) by Herman Wouk and War and Remembrance (The Henry Family, #2) by Herman Wouk by Herman Wouk Herman Woukwhich is nominally fiction but mostly history, We Die Alone A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance by David Howarth by David Howarthand I'm mostly through Unbroken A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand by Laura Hillenbrand Laura Hillenbrand. I also recently liked Timothy Egan 's Timothy Egan book on T.R., The Big Burn Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America by Timothy Egan . I'm interested in environmental issues, gardening, science/medicine, psychology--lots of things! Glad to be here and I hope the group is rewarding!

Bryan Craig Welcome, Keith. It must be pretty cold up there in New England.

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

Bryan Craig Hello Liz. Glad you now have time to read so much history.

Great job on your first attempt at the citation. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Bryan, I think I understand now. Two questions: is it possible to do the "add book/author" feature on the iPad? I prefer using it, when possible, and I didn't see any way to add a book in the correct format. Also, what's with the ellipses I see on various posts? They seem to be clickable links to books. Thanks. Here's another of my recent reads, so you can see if I have it right.

The Forgotten 500 The Untold Story of the Men Who Risked All For the Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II by Gregory A. Freeman by Gregory A. Freeman (no photo.)

I am also interested in quality fiction dealing with either the Crusades or the Great War.
