Luke | 2 comments Hello everyone! My name is Luke, I am 13 years old, and skipped 7th grade. I live in a small town about 30 miles west of Augusta, GA, and 137 miles east of Atlanta. I play football, and aspire to attend either the University of Georgia or Harvard. The reason I joined the group is because I enjoy learning about wars around the world and find history in itself to be amazing. I hope to find some goodreads from this group.

Bryan Craig Welcome, Pankaj. You have a very interesting job.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

Greetings.

I am Joesyl Marquis and I see reading as a deep devotion. I believe the world is constantly intertwined with histories & stories- that is the primary reason why people like me tend to read & enjoy immensely. There is always room for imagination and knowledge as long as you are ready to embrace what these written text can offer.

I enjoy wintry evenings with a cup of coffee & a cuddly dog, too.
I am fifteen (15) years old.
I adore music and arts.
History has been a great joy to read and relive.

I hope to get in touch with such interesting individuals of this group. Hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerest regards,

Felix | 1 comments Hello everybody,

My name is Felix. I am currently a political science and law student. I owned a small business together with some friends before and have a degree in international business and management with a specialization in marketing.

My real love is history though. I always excelled at it in high school and it has been my pet peeve ever since. I still want to go through a university level education on history eventually (need to finish up my law degree first and get a decent job again).

I especially have a fascination with everything relating to both the Vikings and the Mongols (any advice about good books on those subjects would be much appreciated. But ''unfortunately'' by interest tend to be quit broad. For example i recently have been reading about the British empire ( really a big fan of Niall Ferguson. And i really would love to dip into Ancient Chinese history a well.

Most of the ''historical''reading i am currently doing is related to politics though (finally starting with Fukuyama ''Origins'').

I am a bit all over the place but if you can overlook that i would love to get some imput or have some discussions. Cannot wait to learn from you guys.

Ooh and before i forget,i am from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I also spend a far amount of time in South east Asia when i was younger because of family.

WWI is a very fascinating period of time and the history department of William & Mary has maintained several professors with a strong interest in this area.

One notable alumnus, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates '65, L.H.D. '98, and the 24th Chancellor of the College of William & Mary once reflected: “The First World War is not well understood or remembered in the United States.... Hollywood has not turned its gaze in this direction for decades. Yet few events have so markedly shaped the world we live in.”

Abhishek Shaw | 2 comments I was hoping to be introduced and guided to fiction and non-fiction that would give me a good picture of the last 200 years of social movements across the world (19th and 20th centuries). The idea is to read summaries at first to get a bird's eye view of this period and then maybe explore in detail periods/movements of interest. I am currently reading about the Russian Revolution (Lenin and the Russian Revolution by Christopher Hill, followed by Mother by Maxim Gorky and simultaneously Ten Days that Shook the World by John Reed). Any suggestions? Is this a good start?

I've always loved history but decided to keep it as a passion and so studied law and work in public service. I read a lot of historical biographies and prefer lesser known people. I love seeing what their lives were like. I was a member of the Richard III Society and have read a lot about the Wars of the Roses. I love ancient history too and have read Plato, Cicero, Aeschylus and a lot of fiction about ancient times. One of my favourites is 'Creation' by Gore Vidal.

Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome Evelyn from one of the world's most ardent Anglophile!!!!! I love England and try to get there as often as possible.
You will find a myriad of topics to catch your interest here in the HBC and we hope you will join in the discussions/book recommendations.

Amy Glad to have found you guys!

I have adored history for as long as I can remember, and even wound up adding it as a second major in college. Most of my time these days is spent either doing my day job as a litigator or doing my all-the-time job as a mother to a 1.5-year-old, but I do still try to hit the books whenever possible.

Virtually anything about the past interests me, but I have studied U.S. history the most and have been drawn in particular to colonial history and the Cold War period. Bookends, indeed. I also adore trail journals.

A couple of recommendations along those lines:

The Devil in the Shape of a Woman Witchcraft in Colonial New England by Carol F. Karlsen by Carol F. Karlsen (no photo)

American Prometheus The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird by Kai Bird

Covered Wagon Women Diaries and Letters from the Western Trails, 1840-1849 (Covered Wagon Women, #1) by Kenneth L. Holmes by Kenneth L. Holmes and Michael Tate (no photos)

Great to be here!

Bryan Craig Welcome, Amy. With a young family myself, I hear you about fitting in history reading as much as I can.

Great job on the citations, by the way. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Just a tweak:

American Prometheus The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird by Kai Bird Kai Bird

Edd (sooperedd) Hello All. My name is Edd. I reside in Colorado, USA. I have a BA in History from CU. I typically enjoy Colonial American, Antebellum American and Progressive Era history but limit my readings to anything interesting.

I look forward to spirited, insightful discussions with everyone.

Thanks

Welcome, Edd. We have a section on American history here -

Check it out, you will surely find something interesting.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how books you mention should look:

Blood of Tyrants George Washington & the Forging of the Presidency by Logan Beirne by Logan Beirne Logan Beirne

Jonathan Hello.

My Name is Jonathan. I live in St. Paul Minnesota and have a BA in History and a BS in Accounting. My combination of history and accounting seems to raise lots of questions during job interviews but I enjoy them both very much. While I am no longer able to read as much as I did during college, I seem to keep on accumulating lots of books to read in my free time - whenever that will come.

I enjoy military history with an emphasis on world war two. I look forward to being a member of this group and discussing my love of history.

Thanks!

Bryan Craig Welcome, Jonathan. I hear you about finding the free time. I got the books, but less about the time. However, maybe joining this group will get you reading more.

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro
