Bryan Craig Hi Jill. You came to right place to talk history. Just some housekeeping:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

Robert Kirkconnell | 1 comments Robert Kirkconnell here and I just joined the group. I am retired U.S. military and also a retired high school teacher. When I retired, with a capitol R, I finished writing a book that I had been working on for years. It is political science, history and theory, and it delves into what I would call hidden history or at least under reported history. These are the areas I am particularly interested in. In researching this I found that many of the best books had been suppressed in the U.S. Somewhere along the line I ran into Goodreads and have started doing reviews on some of the source books that were obscure but powerful. Looking forward to getting to know the people in the group and tap into what all of you know.

message 2356: by Lysergius (last edited Oct 20, 2013 08:44AM) (new)

Lysergius Greetings all, My name is lysergius and I have a lifelong interest in history. If this sounds like an introduction during an AA session so be it. The fact remains that I would probably rather read a history book that a vampire or juvenile wizard saga.

Is it necessary to have a serious turn of mind to appreciate and enjoy the story of how we got to where we are today? I think not. One of the most fascinating things about history is the strange and often humourous turns that events take over time. In a sense if one waits long enough, what goes around comes around, again and again.

My particular areas of interest are Europe prior to WWI, WWI itself, causes and resolution. Europe between the wars, and during WWII. I am also fascinated by Vietnam, Chinese and Japanese history.

I also like to read about historical issues in literature, philosophy and to a lesser extent sociology.

I read in english, french and german.

I look forward to exchanging ideas and book recommendations.

Thank you.

Bryan Craig Welcome, Jade. I totally agree that we can learn about people and nations from their past, which helps for the future.

Caro

Paul | 1 comments I had to spend a little time thinking what I wanted to say in my introduction and what my specific historical interests are. It’s pretty easy to say, “I’m Paul. I am interested in WW2, Viking trade routes, or the 12th Century Renaissance”; however, I felt there must be something deeper that drives me to read about the past. My conclusion was that I am interested in the ideas that drove people to action. So often history can simply be a list of dates, facts and names — boring, but if I can find an idea that forms an undercurrent to the events of history I am hooked.

My current fascination:

The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire by Edward N. Luttwak

Best regards,

Paul

Lacey Falcone (laceyfalcone) | 2 comments Hi, my name is Lacey. I am an American living in Germany. I was in the US Air Force, and retired 2 years ago. I decided to stay in Germany for a few years - I'm trying to learn the language (which is quite difficult, by the way :). I work on the US base at Landstuhl. I really enjoy living here and having access to all this wonderful history. One of my favorite pastimes is tromping around the old castle ruins here...did you know there are 20,000 castles and castle ruins in Germany? I'm looking forward to interacting with this group of like-minded history lovers!

Welcome, Lacey. I hail from the same area myself.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how books you mention should look:

Battle Cry of Freedom The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson by James M. McPherson James M. McPherson

Amy Stilgenbauer | 1 comments Hello. My name is Amy. I have had a lifelong love of history. So much so that it's driven me to become a historian and archivist, despite the fact that those fields aren't exactly booming. My studies focused on the United States Progressive Era and WWI, but I am also very interested in the history of the Mediterranean and Middle East as well as the history of cities and their development in general.

Nance (carousel1231) | 22 comments Hello,
My name is Nancy and I am new to the History Group. I have been retired for a few years. I rarely read when I was working because of the job stress and long hours. But I heard about a US Civil War General by the name of Joshua Chamberlain on public radio one day and since he sounded like quite an amazing individual I got a book about him. As a result, I realized that I am quite interested in history and have read some wonderful books since then. And I have already added some more books to my "to read" list from reading the postings from the Group and for that I thank you.
