Bryan Craig Welcome, Portia, eclectic is good. Glad you joined.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

The book about Ives that I reviewed is undoubtedly somewhat dated, but still worth a look for those who don't know his music and wonder what the fuss is all about.... The Ancient City A Study of the Religion, Laws, and Institutions of Greece and Rome by Numa Denis Fustel De Coulanges by Fustel De Coulanges

The author shows us how, in Rome and Greece, the institution of family influenced ancient religion and how ancient religion influenced laws and political structures.

I also love the Shardlake series
Dissolution (Matthew Shardlake, #1) by C.J. Sansom by C.J. Sansom
I'm a huge fan of historical non-fiction. For me, it can be as thrilling or heartbreaking as any work of fiction. I highly recommend this book about a lesser known aspect of WWI

Welcome, Nate! I share your interest in financial history. To truly understand the forces that drive nations, especially the ones that drive them to war, you have to "follow the money". Given your interest in the world wars, I think you would especially like Ahamed's The Lords of Finance --an interesting story with fascinating characters that shows how post WWI global finance decisions helped to incubate WWII. You might also like Chernow's history of the Morgan banking & finance empire. Again, such an important aspect of the history of the 20th century.

Mark Mortensen Todd wrote: "I'm of the mind that World War One shaped the world that we live in. ..."

Todd, both you and Nate have the same rare appreciation for WWI.

Former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates was so correct when he mentioned: “The First World War is not well understood or remembered in the United States.... Hollywood has not turned its gaze in this direction for decades. Yet few events have so markedly shaped the world we live in”. In 12 days he is speaking just a few miles from my home and I hope to attend.

Cohiba?

Sheev Kapadia | 1 comments Hello everyone, My name is Sheev and I live in India. I'm an undergraduate student of Engineering. I joined this group because I like to read books on history and most probably I like those books which related to Medieval time. Currently I'm reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.

Bryan Craig Hi Sheev and welcome. We have a British Middle Ages topic, which would be a good start:

Mike | 1 comments Hello Everyone

I'm Mike from the UK and I am an IT bod and bobbing around that middle age part of my life - ouch!
I grew up and continued living in sub-saharan Africa many years but eventually bought an umbrella and settled thereafter in UK. Still have the itch though and love travel, I particularly love Canada.
I prefer reading History (naturally) and Science Fiction. I was hooked on History since getting a good World History compendium as a kid - the joy has never gone away. Just lately I have been particularly wrapped up with Roman history and I find myself in awe of the grandeur and scale of Romes' achievements and the power of the individuals - but all history has its's own appeal!
I look forward to being part of this group (as well as the Sci-Fi group - hope I don't get booted out for that!!). People seem to be decent and like-minded souls to a large extent. Looking forward to being involved.

Best Wishes
Mike
