Oleksii (oleksiiu) | 1 comments Hello. My name is Alexey. I am a Ukrainian expat in the Netherlands, I work in IT. And I don't believe in history. Well, of course I'm certain that all these things had happened. Although memories about them, views on them, interpretations of them will never be consistent. We don't have one past but rather infinite number of pasts reflected in us.
And I like to create my own view on history by reading books :)
Looking forward to see different books and different views in this group.

K (kateloves) | 2 comments Hello fellow history lovers! My name is Kate. I'm 25 and a New Englander who is now living and working in South Korea as an ESL teacher.

I have a passion for history and am hoping to meet others like myself. I graduated University with a B.A in English Literature, but it was a tough decision between Literature and History.

Some of my favorite time periods are Tudor England, Ancient Korea and Egypt, as well as the history of New England - things such as the Salem Witch Trails.

message 2904: by David (new)

David Eppenstein Hello everybody,

I am a retired public defender from the Chicago area. While my former employment would likely make me a fan of crime and mystery novels I am not. My real world experiences, unfortunately, make fictional crime too laughable for me. There is one exception to this statement and that is the work of John Dunning. While Mr. Dunning's books are of the crime and mystery genre they are really all about books and that's what hooked me. My interest in history is primarily concentrated on our American Revolution, British history, and church history. I have also recently developed a keen interest in the life of Benedict Arnold. One of the things I enjoy doing with history is engaging in "What If" discussions concerning the occurrence or non-occurrence of a historical event and how this would alter subsequent world events. My undergraduate degree and initial career choice was architecture and architectural history is also something I enjoy especially the Italian Renaissance. This period frequently involves significant involvement with church history so two of my interests are thus satisfied. While these are my primary areas of historical interest I am always open to discovering new areas to explore.

Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome Alexey. I was taken with your introduction as it relates to history.....it was very insightful. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

I mostly read books on history, biographies of historical figures and war. I am semi-retired, although I do take on a client from time-to-time for research for extra income. I look forward to recommendations on historical works. I also subscribe to many military history-type magazines. Although the electronic world is great, there is nothing better than curling up with a good, physical magazine.

message 2926: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1 comments Hi, Everyone! Well, I'm not sure how much I'll add to the group, as I am certainly not an expert on history, as I'm sure some of you are. I actually grew up thinking it was incredibly boring (I had lots of coaches for history teachers, and lots of "read the chapter and fill in the blanks" assignments), and only as an adult have I really started to develop an appreciation for it. I especially like biographies and books that tie in with literature ("The Story of English" was really good). Anyway, thanks for letting me into your group. I'm sure I'll learn a lot of interesting things here.
God bless!
Melissa

Deborah Flores | 1 comments Hello, my name is Deborah. I am interested in social and political history, especially anything to do with Russia and Classical Greece (I've also studied both languages). French history and the Cold War are also high on my list. Additionally, I read the occasional book on legal or scientific history. Kind of a mixed bag, I know, but there you go. There is an internal logical consistency to it, I swear.

I also fancy quirky and offbeat history from any period. Some of my recent reads and to-reads include books such as Mr. Jefferson and the Giant Moose: Natural History in Early America (in which T. Jefferson acquires a stuffed moose to defend America's honor abroad); Wicked River: The Mississippi When It Last Ran Wild (river pirates and other scalawags!); A Pirate of Exquisite Mind: Explorer, Naturalist, and Buccaneer: The Life of William Dampier (a privateer/scientist); and The Berlin Candy Bomber (the Airlift itself was such an improbable event; the candy is icing on the cake). As I said, offbeat, but absolutely fascinating.

I live in Southern California. When I'm not reading (or writing), I'm a lawyer who does some human rights work, international policy analysis and suchlike.

Mr. Jefferson and the Giant Moose Natural History in Early America by Lee Alan Dugatkin by Lee Alan Dugatkin
Wicked River The Mississippi When It Last Ran Wild by Lee Sandlin by Lee Sandlin

My name is Erina. My interest for History comes from an accumulation of my interests in the arts, culture, and food. I love to learn about the origins of practices...

I am a first generation Korean-American living in Los Angeles. I have yet to visit Asia, and would like to learn more about the history before I make my first visit. I also enjoy learning about the history of Los Angeles, as I have seen and am witnessing much change in my city. Looking forward to future conversations with everyone.

Ro (focadefectuosa) | 1 comments Hey all,

Glad to be part of this group! My name is Rocio. I am half Mexican/half Spanish. I have been lucky enough to travel and live in many different cities, and countries. I have a degree in International Relations and a Masters in European Studies - so that explains my interest in travelling, international politics and history. I am particularly interested in diplomatic history, South East Asia, Latin America/Spain and European history (specifically, the Renaissance, the Thirty Years' War, WWI, and WWII)

I would love to exchange book recommendations with all of you, in English, Spanish or German... so much to read, so little time! Thank you very much for the warm welcome :)

Bryan Craig Welcome Erina. L.A. fascinates me too. It was just orange groves, I guess, until post-WWII, then all those orchards got dug up and lost. Let us know what some of your favorites L.A. history books are sometime using this topic:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

Bryan Craig Welcome, Rocio. Glad you found us and diplomatic history is good stuff. I dabbled into it in grad school myself.

THAT is not history's fault, or the writer's fault or the publisher's fault, it is "society"'s fault.
