Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Hover (The Taking, #2) by Melissa West and liked it even better than the first book, maybe because it was more sci-fi than pnr this time.

I have a couple of partly-finished books in progress. Burning by Elana K. Arnold FrankenDom by Robin L. Rotham (my curiosity to read a book with sounding lead me to this)

It is and the characters are great. It has made me look at BDSM in a totally different way. I love the dom/sub relationships in this series.

Lori (lorimcd) Quick check-in... my sister is in a regular room and is doing well. But they're already talking about sending her to a rehab facility. She can walk with help, but she's still got a long at to go.

Regina, willing to process any advice that you're willing to give. Inbox here works. Hospital has Wi-Fi.

Thanks to all for he love, support, and kind wishes. My BIL is talking to a personal injury lawyer, but still. Lots to set through. And the driver made bail and might be balk in CA already.

I'll try to check in again soon. Been so exhausted and still have my nieces.

Love to all.

I am so happy you are enjoying the book and you give me credit for you jumping on the RC bandwagon. I look forward to the group read we are doing so we can talk about our favorite bad ass mother*ckers. Ha ha!

Lisa | 383 comments Have been away on a long weekend, with no cell service or internet so now trying to catch-up.
@Lori - how awful! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your sister and her family.

I just finished Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and feeling a bit...what's the word...dazed? I almost didn't finish it because how it made me feel - a bit sick and caused some nightmares. No, it's not a scary book - it's dark and twisted. And I was surprised it affected me like it did, at the beginning. But I stuck with it and sorta glad I did. Kinda. Now I need an uplifting, funny book. FAST!

message 2661: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Okay, I'm 26% in to Rock Chick Revolution (Rock Chick, #8) by Kristen Ashley and it just jumped the shark so freaking badly that I'm not sure I can even keep reading. I'm so annoyed by this story direction! Grrrr!!

Leea | 1437 comments Lori, so glad to hear about your sister. Thanks for updating us.

I finished Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews . Now i'm going to read, Rock Chick Revolution (Rock Chick, #8) by Kristen Ashley about 7% into it and i'm not thrilled about the choppy feeling and the back and forth between past/present.

I'm also going to start Texas Redeemed by Isla Bennet to review.

message 2668: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Glad things are looking up for your sister, Lori.

I finished It All Started With a Lima Bean (Intertwined Hearts, #1) by Kimi Flores which I didn't like. I also finished the audio to Vanilla on Top (Walk on the Wild Side, #1) by C.J. Ellisson which was so fun and sexy.

I can imagine how overwhelmed this has to be. Thanks for taking a second to let us know how you're doing.

I finished Burning by Elana K. Arnold and ended up liking it, in spite of how intense the love story started out as. I think the journey of the characters and their personal self-discoveries far outweighed some of the awkwardness.

I'm glad your sister is doing better, Lori! What a devastating situation for your family. The fear, anger, and relief have to be emotionally draining. Prayers to you and your family!

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Just started Homecoming Ranch by Julia London. Never read anything by her before but I found an ad from Writespace in my e-mail this afternoon and thought I would give it a go. Not too bad so far...what you would expect from Contemporary Romance...not overly challenging but quite well written.

Homecoming Ranch by Julia London

I kind of think the cover is a disaster. The best covers give a good sense of the book, immediately communicate with the target market and catch the eye. This cover is a little too tricky and I don't know if it does any of those things.

To my way of thinking, Heart of Venom has about the best cover I've seen in the past couple of months.

Heart of Venom (Elemental Assassin, #9) by Jennifer Estep

message 2673: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Stacia, how is your mom doing? Better, I hope.

Think I might get a few breaths in today... or I hope so. Not sure what the rehab center is like or what lies ahead of us there. But my sister-in-law (my brother-in-law's sister) who was my roommate before my sister was married and is still a really good friend will be back home in Vegas tomorrow. It'll be good to have her here.

Any recommendations for light-hearted reading to take my mind off things? The Night Huntress stuff isn't doing it, nor is any of the erotica I tried to read. I might try another Highlander or just go back to the tried-and-true Outlander.

Thanks again for all your support and love.

message 2674: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Lori - glad you'll be getting a bit of a break and some support with your friend's arrival. Some of my fav light reads that have humor are: Bossypants by Tina Fey and Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple which are both excellent audiobooks that I think are best in that format. Although, listening to Bossypants, Tina Fey will refer you to photos that I missed seeing but otherwise it was great listening to her with LOTS of laughs. And you can listen with half an ear some of the time.

A light fun dragon series that I liked is You Slay Me (Aisling Grey Guardian, #1) by Katie MacAlister and I read all the side series also. Katie MacAlister has also written a fun stand-alone Men in Kilts by Katie MacAlister which I bought mainly for the cover and the title but it turned out to be a fun read.

I'll be praying for only good things for you and yours from now on!

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Lori McD wrote: "Any recommendations for light-hearted reading to take my mind off things?"

Leann Sweeney writes some cute murder mysteries...Cats in Trouble series. You've read one, you've read them all but they're fairly light. For more information about the cats, ask Stacia.

Lingerie Wars was good fun. Might be worth a look. I enjoyed Neanderthal Seeks Human. If you feel like an historical romance, The Dukes Tattoo is great. Or for something more paranormal romance, anything by Molly Harper.

Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs (Jane Jameson, #1) by Molly Harper The Duke's Tattoo (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse , #1) by Miranda Davis Neanderthal Seeks Human A Smart Romance (Knitting in the City, #1) by Penny Reid Lingerie Wars (Invertary #1) by Janet Elizabeth Henderson The Cat, the Quilt and the Corpse (A Cats in Trouble Mystery, #1) by Leann Sweeney

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Lori, she's still in the hospital. Progress is slow-going. I haven't had much new to report, unfortunately. :(

Lisa -- did you read my review? I'd love to discuss the book with you. Your reaction is pretty similar to my thoughts.

I wonder if maybe a genre shift? I agree with Ian, try anything by Molly Harper. I love the Bad Day series by Sophie Littlefield -- crime fiction mixed in with funny characters (no real romance though, just crushes):

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I finished both The Hero (Thunder Point, #3) by Robyn Carr and Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Ian what did you think of Hero? I liked it better than #2, but I didn't love it. I did enjoy it though.

I am serious, my pillow was freaking soaked with my tears when I finished Me Before You.

I am reading The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara which is a huge genre shift, it is an arc but was released this week so I gotta get on it. I am liking it so far but am only in the beginning. And I am listening to American Gods by Neil Gaiman I need to read The Shade of the Moon (The Last Survivors, #4) by Susan Beth Pfeffer as it was released this week and I have the arc -- but only just got it. I liked some of the previous books in this series, but I do have issues with them.

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I love Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie so very very much. I'd add that Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (Love By Numbers, #1) by Sarah MacLean is a ton of fun as well.

message 2684: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments @Regina - Perhaps you're right about Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple - the subject matter may not be on the light side even though it has really funny moments. So Lori, forget that recommendation. Now is probably not a good time to read that one. Sorry :) But I agree about any of Molly Harper books - they're wonderfully light and hilarious. I love them all.

Sure, Regina, I'd love to discuss Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (that's the one you're talking about, right?). Lori - do NOT read that one now!! Very dark and twisted. Regina - just tell me where - GR message or a thread? AND, OMG, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes affected me the same way, except I didn't sob into my pillow. I went thru a box of tissues and finally a towel then had puffy eyes. Man.

message 2685: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Thanks for all the recommendations. Checking them out tonight. My BIL is actually going home to sleep tonight, and he wants his daughters with him. So I'm getting a break and a night alone - I think I'm happy about that - LOL!

I do have Gone Girl, but I definitely won't read it right now.

I wasn't as impressed with White Trash Zombie Apocalypse as I was with the first two. Seemed a bit like a victory lap...or maybe a set-up for the next story arc. A lot of things going on that didn't really matter.
