Courtney | 159 comments Finished Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson , which I finished sooner and more easily than I thought. I won't be continuing the series, though. The heroine got on my nerves and the romance really fell flat.

I am absolutely stoked, though, to start Shadowfell (Shadowfell, #1) by Juliet Marillier , which just arrived at my door an hour ago!

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Ugh. I just made a mistake in a reading challenge I am in. I play words with friends, it is a fun group challenge. We get two words on a friday and have to read a book that has those two words and whose title, series name or author matches one of the letters of the week. So, the words were Pork and Barn. My letter is P. So I thought my book had both pork and barn in it, turns out I was wrong! No pork. If any of you (haha) happen to know of a book where the author's name begins with P, the beginning name of the book or series begins with a P and has both Pork and Barn in it -- send it my way! I need to read it before midnight tomorrow! The book I had read was Parting Gifts by Lorraine Heath

Michelle (michelleabbott) | 2 comments I'm currently reading Taking Chances (Taking Chances, #1) by Molly McAdams

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Oh boy. I'll be curious to see what you think when you've finished that one. There's a lot of varying opinions about that book from loved to hated.

message 2856: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Pork and Barn. That's a challenge, Regina! LOL Does it have to say "Pork" or a mention of a pig is okay?

I finished Bound by Night (MoonBound Clan Vampires, #1) by Larissa Ione and it was ok. It's a different take on Vampires so I give credit to the author for that. I'm thinking like 3.5ish.

I also started Abel (5th Street #4) by Elizabeth Reyes ...buddy read with Stacia :)

message 2857: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I think pig is okay. I am going to ask the mod! Thank you!!

I also got two other suggestions
Peach Pies and Alibis (A Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery #2) by Ellery Adams Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult

message 2858: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelleabbott) | 2 comments Hi Stacia,
I made the mistake of reading the reviews, there were no spoiler alerts so I accidentally found out about the incident that has readers divided. I've only read 25%, am enjoying it so far, don't know if I'll still feel that way by the end.

I had the book spoiled for me too. You think people would know that this is something which requires a warning before posting.

My copy isn't opening, so I'm off to find another copy and then I'll be starting.

message 2862: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Regina, here's another suggestion. The books starts with a 'P' and there's mention of barn several times and one mention of "salted pork"

Pieces of Sky (Blood Rose, #1) by Kaki Warner I read it a few years ago and really liked it.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Oh and I finished Seduce (Beautiful Rose, #0.5) by Missy Johnson . Yet another thing I got sucked into because of the glowing 5 star reviews. You think I would have learned by now, but thankfully, I don't read as many over-hyped books these days. I found it pretty meh, but I can see why others would like it. I think I've just been spoiled by other books which have tackled similar subjects but have been more in-depth.

message 2864: by D.G. (last edited Aug 22, 2013 12:46PM) (new)

D.G. Just finished Forged in Fire by Trish McCallan . I got the freebie a while back and bought the audio because the whispersync deal was very cheap. But I understand there's a new ending so I'll check my old copy and see how it changed.

The characters in the book weren't bad but the romantic suspense plot was out of this world crazy. So you want to get a hold on some people and some papers and you think the best way to get that accomplished is to hijack a plane full of passengers? What a about an old fashioned B&E mixed with kidnapping? Wouldn't that make more sense?

At least the narration was well done so no complaints there.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Continuing with A Discovery of Witches....just wanna say...this book is torture....very well written torture.

Started Plum Deadly which is a cozy mystery. It's really strange....there are no cats.

Courtney | 159 comments I finished Shadowfell (Shadowfell, #1) by Juliet Marillier , which was pretty good, but not the best I've read by Juliet Marillier.

Now I'm going to reread Geist (Book of the Order, #1) by Philippa Ballantine since I bought its sequel Spectyr (Book of the Order, #2) by Philippa Ballantine .

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Does anyone know of a book site I can buy Wethering The Storm (The Storm, #2) by Samantha Towle ? It is not available on my Nook. I checked allromance.com and loose-id.com. The only site I could about the author was her blog. I think the book may only be available on Amazon.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I checked smashwords and diesel and nada. It might just be a kdp (kindle direct publishing) and might not be available for some time outside of Amazon.

Just finished Blue By You by Rachel Gibson and it was the perfect little sweet, fun and sexy short story to chase the one I didn't like very much earlier. This was my first time reading Gibson and now I'm going to have to go back and look for something else of hers to read because I enjoyed this so much more than I was expecting.

message 2876: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I'm listening to Good Girls Don't (Donovan Brothers Brewery, #1) by Victoria Dahl and it's been a weird experience because on the one hand, I've had a few good laughs but on the other, it had several of my pet peeves - interfering relatives, lots of old fashioned thinking (I mean, really, who cares if a single woman is pregnant these days?) and brothers 'warning away' a guy from their 27-year old sister. I mean, really?

message 2877: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Aug 23, 2013 08:55AM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I went through some shit when I was unwed and pregnant. You wouldn't believe the looks and comments I got. My age might have been part of it though. However, I also got hit on, which was equally weird.

The guys warning someone away from a 27 year old is weird. By that age, most single women have half of their family asking when they're going to settle down, whether they want to or not.

message 2878: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Was that recently, Stacia? And were you very young? Because these days it seems more pregnant women are single than married. (The pregnant woman in this book is an adult and the hero is her best friend and everybody thinks he's the father. He doesn't want to contradict that rumor because he's protecting her 'reputation'. I mean really????)

In the 27-year old's case (the heroine), she only has two brothers (her parents are dead) so they are very protective. She's kept away all her relationships private from them (which I find really weird) so they think she's innocent (!) But if you think about it, if you have a 27-year old sister and you've never known her to go on a date, you should be wondering if something's going on because by that age, most people are dating unless something is going on.

My oldest is 18, so it wasn't within the past few years, but it wasn't so far back like it was my parents generation either, haha. I was out of high school, but still young enough. Some people were downright cruel with their comments about the single mother thing when I was well into my twenties (even after I was married - some friends and family members told me that I got married to find a baby daddy, which hurt), which was less than 10 years ago. And this was in California which is more liberal, so I can see where certain parts of the country/world (bible belt) might not have caught up with the times.

I do think it's weird about the brothers though. Are they wanting the chick to be single?

message 2882: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I think it also depends where you grew up Stacia. Small towns are I think more old school than a big city like LA for example. It is a shame people are so close minded.

message 2883: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments The 27 year old sister/brother thing is definitely weird.

I do know a few people who throw around the word 'bastard' when talking about a baby who's being born outside of marriage. And I know that it's still pretty regular to have someone ask who the father is act like its a sad situation if you're a single mother. I don't know anyone who would be cruel to someone, but it's not a far stretch for me to picture it. I had a friend who was in college with a daughter and the other parents at her school treated her coldly because she wasn't married.

Okay, Peggy. I've started rereading A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness but in audio form and it took 3 chapters before I started remembering it. I kept thinking of other similar books and it was confusing me. Now it's coming back to me. Sorta.

I just finished Shooting Scars (The Artists Trilogy, #2) by Karina Halle this morning. The title is so appropriate, as all Halle's titles are and I love the cover. But have mixed feelings about the book and have come up with some wild theories about some of the characters. Can't wait for the next book to see if I'm even close.

message 2885: by D.G. (new)

D.G. This book is set in Boulder in 2011 so it's not that long ago. They talk about it having a small town feel even though it has more than 100K people. The pregnant woman is a police officer, that's why I find it weird that the hero feels like 'protecting her' - if you are a female police officer, you probably have gone out of your way to prove you're tough and all that so I don't see where the hell a man comes along with the idea that you need protection, even if he's supposedly your best friend. (I haven't seen any evidence of that.)

People are not being mean to her but they are wondering about the paternity and they think it's the hero because they are partners (he's also a cop.)

Things like that are nobody's business but you know that people will talk. A couple here at work had an affair (the guy was married and left his wife because of it) and then the other woman got pregnant! You can only imagine how much talk there was. :)

message 2886: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I finished Bound by Night and it was okay. The way she wrote the camp world is very interesting. I'll be reading the next book for sure.

Now I'm going to attempt to start The Returned by Jason Mott before the arc is released. I have a crazy busy weekend so I hope I can find some time to read.

Happy Friday everyone!

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I finished the sample of Into the Wilderness (Wilderness, #1) by Sara Donati , and it was very good. But I can't commit to a nine hundred page book right now! LOL

I went for Making Him Sweat (Harlequin Blaze #740) by Meg Maguire instead.

message 2889: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished Abel (5th Street #4) by Elizabeth Reyes which was fun. Stacia...glad we got to read this together. It's been a while since I read one with you.

My son's 2nd Birthday Party is tomorrow. Organizing parties are not my thing but I do it every year for my kids. I'm just not one of those moms that enjoy the planning so I'm stressed out right now! There's so much to do so I probably won't be reading anything until the party is over.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I'm glad too. It was a nice book. :)

Good luck with the party. Hope it goes off without any problems!

Will probably be starting The Shining (The Shining, #1) by Stephen King tomorrow. Leea, were you going to join us? I'm sorry that I didn't give you any warning. I was just asked today if we could start.

message 2893: by Ian (last edited Aug 25, 2013 02:04AM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I'll jump in on The MacKade Brothers group read, but I can't get the Rafe MacKade book for Kindle so I'll probably just read book two, The Pride of Jared MacKade .
The topic isn't up in the group reads section yet...I presume you are trying to prevent me from getting too far ahead of myself.

A Discovery of Witches just won't end! I thought I was nearly done but it looks like I won't be finished by Monday or Tuesday. Still it's a little more interesting at the moment and if she keeps this up I might forget the 350 pages of;

"smell this wine. what do you smell?"
"I smell the butt sweat of a camel that has been eating blueberries grown in elephant sh_t".

If I can that torment out of my head by the time I rate it...I might give it 3, or maybe 3.5 stars.

After that it's Lady of Devices which I'm kind of excited about....don't know anything about the book except it's Steampunk and the cover is sublime.

I'll also be starting Nefarious Doings ...I saw the second in the series at Netgalley but decided to get book one rather than requesting book two. It's cost $5.84 (I think) which is pricey for an eBook from an untried author but hey...if it's rubbish it's a lesson learned and let's face it an expensive lesson is easier to remember than a cheap one.

Nefarious Doings (Nell Forrest Mystery, #1) by Ilsa Evans The Pride of Jared MacKade (The MacKade Brothers, #2) by Nora Roberts Lady of Devices (Magnificent Devices, #1) by Shelley Adina

I can't get into Returned, I think it's the subject matter... Boy dies and 8 in 1966 only to be "returned" to his elderly parents 50 years later. Just makes my heart break.

Blasted my way through the Psycop series this past week... LOVED GhosTV (PsyCop, #6) by Jordan Castillo Price ! Probably my favorite of the series so far, although they're all pretty good. I really like Vic and Jacob (Crash, too). Can't find the book coming out on the 30th yet to pre-order yet. Did I miss it?

I put in for Covet by Tracey Garvis-Graves at Netgalley... we'll see.

ALSO, finally going to read A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness . Don't know what my hang-up was.... but still on the HOLD list. Tempted to just buy the darned thing. But now I'm backed up on e-library books, since a bunch just came in all together, like [bookcover:The Cuckoos Calling], The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon , and A Bad Day for Sorry (Bad Day, #1) by Sophie Littlefield . I suddenly have a glut of books to read!

Sheesh, I haven't even cracked Shooting Scars (The Artists Trilogy, #2) by Karina Halle yet!
