Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I know! That was the indie signing that I missed :( I'm just surprised that an author will allow me to meet up with her personally to get her books signed. Gah, what do I even talk to her about? I guess her books would be a start.

message 1553: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Just finished Playing Tyler by T.L. Costa . It was great!

Now I'm listening to The Crown of Embers (Fire and Thorns, #2) by Rae Carson .

I never understand how people want to get married in a place where most can't afford to go. Then they get upset when you can't go. Well hello next time don't pick some exotic locale.

message 1555: by D.G. (new)

D.G. LOL about next time!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!

I'm totally there with you.

Look at that pool, the boys would love it!"

DH and I golfed their small course (think they have 2 - one standard and one small?) and I bought some souvenir golf items in the pro shop. It's very nice and the course was fun.

Los Gatos has a fun downtown area, very touristy, that reminds me a little of Carmel, Calif. for some reason. The wedding was at Byington Winery which sits on a hilltop with gorgeous views. http://www.byington.com/

Yeah, I thought when you plan a destination wedding, you'd expect a small attendance. Isn't that the point? To keep it "intimate"? Geez...

I finished Sins & Needles and Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues and loving both series so far. Something about Halle's writing really gets inside me and stays. Plus, I get so nervous during some scenes. She's good. The White Trash Zombie books make me smile and laugh. Helps take the edge off after I finish reading Halle's books, heh.

Now I'm halfway thru On Every Street (The Artists Trilogy, #0.5) by Karina Halle Back to being nervous!

We'll be down there the first week in Oct! Haven't been to LEGOLAND. It's practically next door to where my sister lives but the kids had outgrown legos by the time the park was built :( There are SO many fun things to do down there as a family though. And as a couple. Something for everybody. I think DH chose our timeshare because the lounge there has Guinness on tap LOL! When he walks in, they automatically start building him one. Ah, home away from home!

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments If you are going to San Diego you have to go to the Ghiradelli shop and get a double chocolate hot fudge sundae (my favorite). There is also a great hamburger joint called Hodad's (featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives). If you are in the mood for awesome bbq there is a place in San Diego called Phil's BBQ.

In Carlsbad - if you like pizza and beer - this place is a great family spot: http://www.pizzaport.com/locations/pi...

@ Marcella - we'll have to look for those places you mentioned. They sound really good (I'm drooling right now!).

message 1560: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Love Carlsbad/Oceanside/North County! So many great farmer's markets around there. And the beaches aren't usually over-crowded like down in Mission Beach.

Flower fields are probably out-of-bloom, but they're my fav when they're all colorful.

Also, while I enjoy the San Diego Zoo, I almost prefer the SD Zoo Safari Park off I-15 in the Rancho Bernard/San Pasqual Valley. BUT, if you go to the San Diego Zoo, if you don't know about Albert's Restaurant, you need to go there; it's my FAV of that park. It's in the Gorilla area, and it's definitely more upscale than burgers and fries, but you can get them there. There's a patio with a waterfall... just so relaxing!

Lori (lorimcd) FYI...
Lying Season (Experiment in Terror, #4) by Karina Halle is on sale right now - Kindle edition - for 99-cents at Amazon.com through 6/28/13.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I love all of the San Diego talk. I really should be taking notes for the next time we make it out that way.

Started Openly Straight by Bill Konigsberg and enjoying it so far.

message 1564: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Lisa, it sounds like you're staying where we stayed. There was a brewery on site and we were in heaven!!

I went to collage at San Diego State so I know a lot of places to go down there. The Wild Animal Park is my favorite. I remember going there when I was a kid :) So much to do is right... now i'm getting excited for our trip.

BTW, still reading Under the Dome... Gosh!!

message 1568: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I've been reading it forever and it's just not pulling me back at this point, but I want to know what happens and be able to compare it to the series that starts MONDAY :)

I really want to read Sins & Needles - do you want to read it together, Wendy?

message 1569: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Yeah, I totally do! But I can't until after my read with Carina on Monday. Can we plan for Wednesday or Thursday next week?

(I miss buddying with you!)

message 1571: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments If anyone is interested, the On the Island Novella is up on Netgalley. Uncharted An "On the Island" Novella (On the Island, #1.5) by Tracey Garvis-Graves

message 1572: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I just finished Wallbanger...anyone who hasn't read it really needs to read it! It's so funny.

Some things reminded me of FSoG...there were these long inner monologues about her missing O (orgasm) which disappeared after a bad one night stand with a "machine gun f_cker".

But I liked FSoG despite the inner monologues which made me cringe. In Wallbanger the inner monologues were so funny I couldn't stop laughing.

Wallbanger by Alice Clayton

message 1573: by Lori (last edited Jun 20, 2013 03:10PM) (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Ian, I Alice Clayton's Redhead books - The Unidentified Redhead (Redhead, #1) by Alice Clayton and The Redhead Revealed (Redhead, #2) by Alice Clayton . I think Wendy turned me on to them. I have Wallbanger, but I haven't read it yet. I'll move it up my list.

Finally got the Netgalley-Amazon thing worked out. Someone's server wasn't doing what it should be doing, but neither side will take the blame or the credit. Oh well. I got Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #6) by Kevin Hearne and that's all that matters to me!

Ooops. Got sloppy with my HTML.

message 1575: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments @ Ian and Lori - those books Alice Clayton books look really good so I just added them to my wishlist/to buy list :D They look like the perfect read for something after Kay's Me Before You which I also have on my list to read.

What is Netgalley? I googled it but their site is currently down. How do you become a professional reader? Sounds like something right up my alley. Maybe.

message 1576: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Finished One Sweet Ride (Play by Play, #6) by Jaci Burton for my buddy read. This one was a little disappointing. There was a lack of character development. However, it was still worth the read. Looking forward to the next one.

Still reading Quinn's Need (Whispering Pines Ranch, #2) by S.J.D. Peterson . Love me some gay sexy cowboys.

message 1577: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments netgalley is like crack for readers...lol! you can sign up and get ARC's of books - it helps if you have a blog, or a pretty consistent reviewing history on Goodreads because you have to post reviews of books

Unidentified Redhead is a super cute series, but for some reason, I don't have any desire to read Wallbanger. I'm sort of turned off to P2P fanfiction right now, with all of the constant arguing about if it's ethical or not.

Netgalley is where you can request advanced copies of books from the publisher for free. It's sort of like a loaner. The books don't expire from kindles but they do if you use epub (you have 55 days iirc). You don't have to be a blogger, but it helps if you are. I don't blog, but I review for them so much that they approve me for a good portion of stuff I request.

Kay wrote: "I finished Me Before You by Jojo Moyes and now, I'm an emotional mess."

I know. Gah. I was so emotional by the end. Her books seem to be about very heavy subjects.

Finished Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers and it was a beautiful love story. Almost finished with Openly Straight by Bill Konigsberg and it's been fun. The writing style reminds me of a John Green or David Levithan type of book but not quite as impressive.

Started Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by R.L. LaFevers and World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks because we're seeing the movie this weekend.

message 1579: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I loved Wallbanger by Alice Clayton when I read it. Then I heard about the whole fan fic angle and it made me like it a little less. I wish it had just been written as it's own thing to begin with.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments It's just something I'm trying to avoid now if I can help it because I almost always end up getting into some sort of discussion where I'm questioned about "why" I'm reading P2P.

But I will finish out the Redhead series when book 3 comes out, just because I'm already into that one for 2 books (that is also P2P, but I didn't know it when I picked up book 1, until after the fact).

message 1581: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It turns me off too. I love the cover, but I just won't read it. I admit to not being a fan of the fanfiction that has been published.

sorry I have been mia. I am just so busy. But I am working my through Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta and I love it. But I am still at the beginning. I am also reading Coercion (Curio, #2) by Cara McKenna -- I wasn't a fan of #1. The writing was fantastic and the characters great, I just didn't think it was that sexy. Coercion is better -- and of course Cara McKenna writes so wonderfully.

I gave up listening to Mercy Blade (Jane Yellowrock, #3) by Faith Hunter -- I decided I just don't care. And I am listening to My Bluegrass Baby by Molly Harper , I am just at the beginning but it is fun.

message 1582: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Just finished Joyland by Stephen King and really liked it. Still thinking about it. It's not scary but more of a nostalgic college-coming-of-age - "a bad case of the twenty-ones" crime mystery...and short! Less than 300 pages.

I've finally started Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh on audio, which has been on my TBR for awhile now. The narrator's voice is kinda getting on my nerves and makes it hard for me to get into the story. Has anybody else here read this book or series? Is it good?

Also started On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves on my kindle. Glad I didn't read this during my flight to Calif :/

message 1583: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Lisa, I'm reading Joyland by Stephen King right now! I'm almost halfway through and it is pretty good! I'm chuckling and even got teary eyed ones already.

message 1584: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It is getting amazing reviews.

message 1585: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I honestly haven't even looked yet. I'm afraid of spoilers. I am really liking it alot though. I may actually buy it for my King print collection.

message 1586: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Oh, Joyland is available in another format? I thought it was only going to be in paperback. I'm so glad I have it in print form though :) Yeah, I steer clear of reviews too until after I finish a book for the same reason, Wendy. Then, I usually find an awesome review that takes the words out of my mouth so I don't bother trying to write a review of my own LOL. Which was the case for Joyland.

I'm really, really liking On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves - don't want to put it down and there's things that need to be done...arrghh!

message 1587: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I Never read on the island, not sure why. But I keep wanting to. ;)

I may buy the audio of Joyland.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I really liked On the Island. The romance was done in a believable way.

message 1589: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I'm not sure if there's an audio of Joyland, but there's definitely not any e-versions. King said he may at a later time but he wanted to release it in print only for now.

I'm borrowing a friends copy.

message 1590: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments There are both cds and an mpe version.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Which means someone's going to scan it and convert it to ebook shortly. It never fails.

message 1592: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Yes, I agree :)

I love Joyland's cover and it certainly caught my son's eye LOL! It reminds me of the old 50-60s film ads.

message 1594: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments The cover is really appealing. How does that man write so much?

I am loving Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta

message 1595: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments It's great isn't it! How far are you into it?

message 1596: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments 40%. I love how much the family loves each other.

message 1597: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (last edited Jun 21, 2013 05:39PM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I know, totally. Even when they're angry. And I really thought it was a great representation to what (view spoiler) is like. I feel like she must know somebody, or have it.

message 1598: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I think she most definitely has. The mom and dad are a lot like me and my husband, it feels so close. I also had a similar feeling about my oldest Gabriela when she was younger. We moved when she started 2nd grade -- and from 2nd to 5th I kept thinking -- where is my crazy outgoing silly girl? And finally when she started middle school and met new kids -- we saw that goofy outgoing kid again. so much feels so real. :)

message 1599: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (last edited Jun 21, 2013 10:28PM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments And that same sense of wanting them to be bold, to shine. I really loved Frankie's mom. I loved all of the characters in that book. Her father was amazing too, and her brother. My two most favorites in that book were Tom and Jimmy though. I loved Tom and Jimmy. Jimmy especially.

message 1600: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I can't write anything coherent right now because I am crying! I cried on and off during the may 30% of the book. Gah I am a mess. I started crying when she walked out of the school.
