Haha! I thought the same thing. I always receive hate for being a New Yorker!

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I often hear from people all the time (who aren't from Chicago or NYC) that say - I love Chicago it is mike NYC without the attitude. I do disagree. They just haven't met the right Chicagoan.

message 1253: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments I want to go to Chicago for a visit. My stylist told me the other day that she lived in Chicago and loved it. It was so nice and clean. LOL

message 1254: by D.G. (last edited Jun 07, 2013 06:59AM) (new)

D.G. HAHAHAHA, Samantha! Are you still in NY?

So my sister in law lives in Georgia and one her sons' teachers said in front of her about how New Yorkers thought they were better than everybody else. Very seriously, my SIL turned to her sons and said: "We don't think so. We really are."

The teacher wanted to die.

message 1255: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments That is hilarious DG.

Lol Samantha. I don't think it is cleaner but the difference is in how garbage is disposed downtown - there are alleys so all the garbage everywhere is never on the street. So there is a perception of being cleaner. I rememeber being shocked at garbage on the street downtown in NYC. But NYC is older and designed differently so it makes sense.

message 1256: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments That is hilarious, DG. Yes, I'm still in NY.

I don't know but she swore it was so much prettier and cleaner.

message 1257: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Downtown can be nasty. Specially around Canal St!

message 1258: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I'm in a book hangover since I finished Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12) by Nalini Singh . I think I'll have to wait until tomorrow and the new Bingo shelf until I decide to read something new.

message 1259: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I love that -- book hangover. :D

Chicago is a beautiful city. The diverse architecture, the Lake which looks like an ocean and the trains criss crossing the city - add in the people. It is a great city. I do love it.

message 1260: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I finished up On Every Street (The Artists Trilogy, #0.5) by Karina Halle and thought it was a great companion to Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle . It explained so much, I would say read it after S&N.

I am stil listening to Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter -- it has really picked up (thankfully). And I started The Favor by Megan Hart

message 1261: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments We have a canal street too! What I love about NYC and Boston too is that in the business and financial district there are independent restairants and street vendors. Chicago used to be that way in the business financial area but it was "cleaned" up so no more street vendors and there are mostly chain stores and restaurants. It is the outskirts of the "loop" that the independent restaurants are.

message 1262: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Finished Entwined with You (Crossfire, #3) by Sylvia Day ... It was OK, but I was a bit disappointed. Have you read a steamy book where there was simply too many sex scenes? If this was one of "those" books, I'd go with it; but the series is set up to be "hot" without being over the top. Maybe I OD'd on this series, since I re-read books 1 & 2 before starting 3.

I've actually read Hexed (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #2) by Kevin Hearne , but I forgot to review it. So since my memory is so bad, I have to re-read it before moving on. Hopefully it'll be a quick skim. I remember the highlights. I like The Iron Druid Chronicles. The series has its own quirks and all, but it's a good read.

Probably have to cleanse my palate again with some historical somethings. And I have to get back to Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle , but not until the end of this month.

message 1263: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 159 comments Finished Beautiful Mess (Bailey's Boys, #1) by Lucy V. Morgan which was pretty funny! Glad I got it. Nice and short.

Should probably continue on with my currently reading shelf...so The Rake by Mary Jo Putney it is.

D.G. Regina wrote: "Chicago is a beautiful city. The diverse architecture, the Lake which looks like an ocean and the trains criss crossing the city - add in the people. It is a great city. I do love it. "

Whenever I saw movies of Chicago, I thought the Lake was an ocean. How could I have thought that when I knew very well that Chicago is in the Midwest is beyond me, but in my defense the only lakes I've seen are fairly small. It just never added up for some reason!!

message 1265: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Haha, it is so true. Whenever Luis's (my husband) relatives visit from Mexico and go to the Lake they are stunned. Where Luis is from in Mexico and a day's drive to either ocean, so they are very familiar with the ocean. One uncle said in Spanish, "That is a f***ing big lake!" I get oddly scared out on a boat in the middle of the lake far from the coast. Maybe because the water is so cold and dark and deep - -I don't feel that way on the ocean. So many swimmers and boaters die every summer, the undercurrent of the lake rivals that of many beaches along the ocean and then boaters who go for a swim (happens all the time) -- get separated from their boat when they don't anchor it and even though they can tread water or they die of exposure. Sorry to be so grim - -but it is a huge body of water that is scary and beautiful!

So Lori, you are easily walking away from S&N until later? I couldn't if I wanted to!

BEA is in Chicago in 2015! hint, hint ....

message 1269: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Regina, I'm not as tied to S&N like I am EiT. I think it's the thing that draws you and repels me - the grittiness and darkness of "real". For some reason, there's enough of the paranormal with Perry & Dex that I don't get bogged down in that in EiT.

But I do want to finish S&N. If it's a cliff-hanger ending (which I think it will probably be), I might change my mind. I'm so the person they target when they do that - I hate not knowing what comes next for major events.

message 1271: by Searock (last edited Jun 07, 2013 03:33PM) (new)

Searock | 10 comments I finally cracked open this series (it's been on my TBR forever). I think since the first one was free, I didn't take it seriously, but its got great reviews so I finally tried it. Glad I did:
A Hidden Fire (Elemental Mysteries, #1) by Elizabeth Hunter This Same Earth (Elemental Mysteries, #2) by Elizabeth Hunter The Force of Wind (Elemental Mysteries, #3) by Elizabeth Hunter A Fall of Water (Elemental Mysteries #4) by Elizabeth Hunter

I'm starting the third book today. It's a quiet sort of PNR, but well-written and somewhat cerebral vs action-packed (although there is some action).

I haven't started
Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle
yet as I've been trying to get through
On Every Street (The Artists Trilogy, #0.5) by Karina Halle
I'm so happy someone just commented that it might be better to read it afterward.
I'll start S&N soon.

message 1273: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Searock - I *adored* the Elemental Mysteries. It took me awhile to get into book 1 A Hidden Fire (Elemental Mysteries, #1) by Elizabeth Hunter , though, I have to admit.

I got one of them free - I think it was book 2 or 3. But I can't start in book 3 without reading books 1 & 2, so... yeah, I'm the sucker that goes for those deals. BUT I really enjoyed the series, so it was worth whatever I ended up paying for the 4 books.

I am enjoying The Favor by Megan Hart

message 1277: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 159 comments I can't find The Rake by Mary Jo Putney ....I know it's somewhere around here but it's eluding me!

So I'll just continue on with Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh .

message 1278: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments I decided to read Close Enough to Touch (Jackson, #1) by Victoria Dahl . I want a small town romance. I'm in such a rut. I need something that is going to work for me. Fingers crossed.

message 1279: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments just finished Swan and the Bear - it was cute with Eve's normal hotness (although, I think in a few places, she went over the top..)

I have this arc, can't wait to read your review. This is supposed to have less racy scenes and more character development. Guess we'll see!

message 1281: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I'm reading Tangle of Need (Psy-Changeling, #11) by Nalini Singh . I can't wait to finish it so that I can read Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12) by Nalini Singh .

message 1282: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Leea that is exactly how it is so far.

message 1283: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Guess that reviewer was right. Haha! Funny because I requested it wanting that "hart" type book. I still plan on reading it. Just maybe once were home.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments 14% and no sex or hint of sex yet. :)

message 1285: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Those pics of the lake, Superior? by Chicago...impressive! I've been to Chicago once for a Pampered Chef conference, in July. It was SO hot and humid, I about died. Ended up not doing much sightseeing, unfortunately. And yeah, thought that body of water was the ocean LOL! I'll blame it on the heat frying my brain.

D.G.'s "book hangover" - hahaha! Perfect.

I just started Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple on audio. It's not a romance but man, it's SO funny! What I'd consider a good palate cleanser or even to help ease a book hangover ;)

message 1286: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I have that in the pile for soon, Lisa...maybe next up when I finish listening to The Tempest - I was in a mood for the Bard

message 1287: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Oh, I haven't listened to that one yet, Dee. Is it good? One narrator or full cast?

message 1288: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments That's Lake Michigan and I hear you summer in the city is brutal.

I am in the waiting list for the audio of that book from my library. I rememeber that tellulah enjoyed it a lot.

message 1289: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments the tempest? its a full-cast - it was one of the free downloads for the YA Sync program this summer

message 1290: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Has anybody read Shadow's Claim (The Dacians, #1) by Kresley Cole ? If you have, can you tell me if I need to be done with the IAD series before starting it?

I'm up to book #8 in IAD but I'm listening to them in audio and they are not all out yet. (#8 comes out in September.)

With Ian McKellen? A freebie?! That's right, you gave us that info awhile ago. Forgot.

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments yeah - unfortunately that free download ended thursday - the weeks is Jane Eyre and The Mysterious Howling (The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place)

Anna has been pushing that series for a while, so it's one I'd like to try soon. I'd gotten book 1 as a freebie too.

I finished [book:Caged Warrior|15723597] a couple days ago but have been behind on book chat. I liked that women can be kings in this book. And for a pnr, it had a lot less cheese than normal, which was a pleasant surprise. I just wish that there had been more of the dragon lineage side of the story told. So much of this book was spent on fight training for the cage mage that the world building was glossed over in parts. Maybe we'll get more on the next book.

@Courtney,
If you don't find it, it's loanable for kindle. Let me know if/when you'd like me to send it to you.

message 1295: by Courtney (new)
