Lori (lorimcd) Finished both What Happens in Scotland by Jennifer McQuiston and Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia last night.

I needed the "light" break that "What Happens in Scotland" provided. It was driving me a little nuts with the did-they-or-didn't-they stuff and some of the usual "he's not sure he can trust her" bits, but it's a fun, funny romp with a nice bit of steam at the end. The author did a good job of holding interest and keeping the book moving forward as she teases us with what really happened on that fateful night.

The movie "Beautiful Creatures" didn't do that book nearly justice. Which is ironic, since justice is a theme in the book. Anyway, I did enjoy the book, but I don't think I can trip my way through 2 more of them... or however many more of the "Beautiful" books there are.

In honor of Entwined with You (Crossfire, #3) by Sylvia Day coming out today (or last night), I decided I needed to go back to the start and read my way through the first 2 books before reading the last one. I'm anxious to see how Ms. Day pulls it all off.

BTW, while I haven't finished Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle , I'm definitely Team Camden. (view spoiler)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Me too! I love I haven't "met" the other guy yet. I am really enjoying it!

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finally finished Cut & Run (Cut & Run #1) by Madeleine Urban . It took me forever b/c it felt like a chore to finish! I'm glad I'm done with it.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Yay for the Camden love. I just don't see the appeal in Javier at all. Is he an interesting type of character to read about? Sure. Should he be romanticized? Nooo way!

message 1205: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I'm about 16% into Under the Dome and i'm really enjoying it. There is a lot of characters in this book and i'll admit that at times I get a tad bit mixed up but I love it!

Tomorrow we're off bright and early on our 14 day road trip/adventure to Oregon... Wish me luck!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Have fun and be safe! Get lots of pics. :)

message 1207: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Yay...have fun, Leea. I hope you can give us updates on the road. I also hope the weather is nice for you in the Pacific Northwest.

message 1208: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Ladies, i'm bringing the laptop... i'm sure you'll be sick of my updates. haha! I just hope to be able to keep up with our buddy read. I really hope the hubby doesn't mind me reading on our 6 hr drive tomorrow. :)

We also got Giant's tickets today from my husbands co-worker. It's the weekend after we get home and they're amazing seats. Row 8, right behind the Giants dug out. Now we're waiting to see if my BIL and new SIL can go with us...

message 1209: by D.G. (new)

D.G. That sounds great, Leea! Have fun!

Totally envious about your tickets!

message 1210: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Have fun Leea! Text me occasionally and make me jealous! :)

message 1211: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Sounds like a great trip, Leea - have fun! Look forward to your road updates! I also love watching live baseball, so I'm a little jealous of your Giants tickets, too.

Lori (lorimcd) Gave myself an early birthday present... got the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" (or whatever) with WiFi and 4G. Haven't tried out the 4G thing yet, since the initial offer is limited to 250MB per month. I have no idea how much data I bring back and forth. WiFi works and is usually available.

Anyhoo, enjoying it so far - love the larger screen and more capabilities. Using it to stream Pandora over my Bose speaker in my office right now.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Congrats on the new Kindle! I love using my reader tablet for watching movies in bed with Netflix and wifi.

Sadly, I want to get one of these because I prop my readers on a pillow https://www.gogopillow.com/

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I've been reading and reading and reading Under the Dome and needed to break for a little tonight, so I finally took the opportunity to finish Before I Met You by Lisa Jewell and I'm glad that I did.

I cried. It seems like I rarely cry over books anymore but the last few chapters of this one did me in. Kay, I'm curious what you'd think of it. The writing style reminds me a lot of Jojo Moyes but better somehow.

message 1215: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Stacia, Lisa Jewell and JoJo Moyes have been on my list but haven't read yet. I will be reading Me Before You next week w some friends. I'm glad you enjoyed Jewell and I just added Before I Met You...hopefully I can get to it soon.

message 1216: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Jumped to non-fiction with No Easy Day The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden by Mark Owen because I figured I should read about a real SEAL for a change. Also I'm fascinated by all the events that led to and occurred in the wake of 9/11. Trying to wrap my head around it all, I guess.

It was pretty good. My complaint was that the first half just felt like him recalling random missions. But once it got into this actual mission, I felt it really picked up.

message 1217: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments So fun Lori!!! Nothing sad about that Stacia, I love cuddling up with my Fire to watch stuff -- if I am not reading.

So I finished Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle last night and I loved it. Absolutely loved it. I am not 50% in to the prequel On Every Street (The Artists Trilogy, #0.5) by Karina Halle and I am liking it a lot too. I didn't like it when I had started it before S&N, but I think it is a prequel that you have to read only before you read #1.

message 1218: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 159 comments Finished Almost Perfect (Perfect Trilogy, #1) by Julie Ortolon , which was pretty decent (and free on Kindle).

Have to decide what to read next...hm, the dilemma!!!

message 1219: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished reading Hindsight by Sarah Belle which I really enjoyed. I also read The Look of Love (The Sullivans, #1) by Bella Andre which was more of a thumbs down for me.

Now, I'm reading Gaming for Keeps by Seleste deLaney which is a romance around the online gaming world. I've never played these games but it seems fun & such a different romance theme.

That's a nifty pillow! I might have to get one, too.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Normally, I laugh at all of the ridiculous stuff you se in the t.v. ads but I watched the commercial for that pillow and was like...okay, that might actually be handy.

Kay wrote: "I finished reading Hindsight by Sarah Belle which I really enjoyed. I also read The Look of Love (The Sullivans, #1) by Bella Andre which was more of a thumbs down for me.

I saw that Hindsight galley and passed it by because no one has read it. But if you think it's worth the read, I might check it out.

I'm not sure why I thought you'd read Jojo Moyes. Maybe it's because you read a lot of British chick lit - although Moyes is more litfic than chick lit, even though people seem to be shelving her and Jewell as chick lit. I actually liked Jewell's book better than the two Moyes books I've read, but Moyes seems to be the more popular author.

message 1222: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Stacia, I'm not sure if you'd like Hindsight. This is more of the light, quirky, and fun chick lits that I just love. It probably wouldn't read like Moyes or Jewell which people shelve as chick lit but is more like women's fiction.

That pillow does look like something I'd want too! But it doesn't look like they have any smaller sizes for my Nook HD.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments So it's more chick lit and less contemporary romance?

I think the pillow is one size fits all. They were showing people putting smaller ereaders into it as well, and even using it to hold regular book covers.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Oh and I definitely agree that both Jewell and Moyes are not chick lit. I'm not sure why people are shelving the books that way.

message 1225: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments yes, more chick lit with a hint of romance. It's more about the character dealing with her issues which of course get solved at the end.

I'm going to watch that video now. If a smaller ereader fits...then this would be perfect for my night reading.

message 1226: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I think I have to get that pillow too. I read and watch TV a lot in my bed!

Thanks for posting the link, Stacia!

I've been using a pillow that looks a lot like that minus the holder and straps ever since I started reading the huge and heavy Outlander hardcovers! Once I got my kindle, I've found it's handy for that also.

I finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman and really liked the full-cast narration audiobook. I'm nearly done with the Sarah Booth Delaney series. Halfway thru Bonefire of the Vanities by Carolyn Haines and then I'll read the just-released Smarty Bones A Sarah Booth Delaney Mystery by Carolyn Haines

Leea | 1437 comments White Trash Beautiful is on Netgalley is anyone wants to read it. I read it last year and really enjoyed it.

We just made it to Oregon where we were pulled over for not using our turn signal. You think they were selecting us out of the crowd with out California plates. So lame!! $179 BS. *rolls eyes*

Still slowly reading under the dome. 22% now.

Funny you say this b/c when I lived in Washington state, everyone used their turn signals!! So, when I moved back to Cali, I noticed that hardly anyone used their turn signals & it was hard for me to break my habit of using it! LOL

Glad you made it safely. Enjoy not pumping your own gas in Oregon and also the tax free shopping!

message 1231: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Good grief, Leea! What part of Oregon did you get a ticket? Geez, sounds like they still don't like Californians. They're worse than up here in Wash. I've had some bad reactions to the question, "where you're from?" and I say Calif. Even though I've been up here for so long.

message 1232: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments LOL Kay! I never really noticed that about Wash. and turn signals before but yeah, some even use it for just veering towards the left or right, not even a turn!

message 1233: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments So true Lisa! But I do feel like WA drivers are so nice and drive so safely. CA drivers get on my nerves!

Oh...I also agree about the bad reactions to "where are you from" I heard many Washingtonians who said they wished the Californians would stop moving up there. Whatever. LOL

Where do you live, Lisa? I use to live in Mill Creek, north of Seattle.

message 1234: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Millcreek is a nice area. My daughter's MIL lived there until recently and my daughter lives in Kenmore, which is also just north of Seattle. I live in Leavenworth, the "Bavarian Village" (I call it barbarian - verra touristy) because of the Cascade mountains looming over it. Really? You think the drivers up here are nice?! Oh man! I must be a mean, rude driver magnet. Even back when I drove a VW bug and tried passing a pickup truck on a winding 2 lane road, the guy stepped on the gas! I leaned on my horn while passing, breaking the metal horn rim on the steering wheel, while I made a rude hand gesture (the Calif. coming out of me LOL!).

message 1235: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments It was in Port Orford basically a small seaside town off 101.

Trust me, when we lived in San Antonio they hated Californians. People used to come behind me and flash brights and honk when I had my ca plates and pathfinder. That's when I got my Tahoe and Texas plates. Lol.

Just sucks starting the trip this way. I don't care but the hubby's pissed. I told him he had 30 min to sulk & that's it!

message 1236: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments What is it with people hating on Californians? I guess we can't win everyone over.

Lisa, I use to work in Bothell so I know where Kenmore is. Leavenworth is one place I regret not visiting when I lived up there. I heard the town is so nice and pretty during the holiday/Xmas season.

message 1237: by Ian (last edited Jun 06, 2013 06:20PM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I wonder if it could be a Rep. / Dem. thing. Religion and politics do strange things to people...my pa couldn't even bring himself to consider one party because he considered them to be the "catholic" party. bizarre.

message 1238: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I agree, Kay, what IS it?! Texas hates Californians too? Yep, it's pretty here and we have tons of festivals!

An excellent ploy, Leea - 30 mins to sulk. Hopefully, your holiday will be upbeat and smooth sailing the rest of the way :D I love the Oregon coast! We've had the best vacations there with the kids. And you've taken quite the book for reading! Should last you the whole trip, huh? I've got to read that still.

message 1239: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments You might be onto something, Ian. Here, I always thought it was a "Calif. hippie" thing but that was back in the 80s.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments It's funny how California gets such a bad rap. I loved living there and it's such an amazing state. You can be at the mountains, desert, ocean, cities, wine country, farming communities, etc. all within hours (or minutes, depending where you are). It is the most diverse state in terms of landscapes and places to go. But all people see is rude drivers, traffic and smog, when most of that is localized to certain specific areas of a very large state.

I actually had an easy time relocating to Colorado because a good portion of the state happens to be made up of California transplants who came here because the job and housing market was booming at one point and it was a lot cheaper to live (which is why we chose to settle here instead of stay in Cali).

message 1241: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments People always think LA, beaches and celebrities. But that's not where I live. I totally agree with stacia! So much to do here, people are just jealous. Ha!

message 1242: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments In Texas, "all the rich Californians were buying up all the land". But that was before the economy took a turn and land was so much cheaper there. Lol.

message 1243: by Searock (last edited Jun 07, 2013 02:25PM) (new)

Searock | 10 comments I think I live near you, @Leea. I think Stacia used to live in these parts too.

The bay area has the most diverse and collectively amazing people I have ever met (and I lived in SoCal which boasts some of the worst, sorry to say- yeesh, I'm sure that is so offensive to make a blanket statement like that).

I'm super jealous of your Giants tickets too. I'm a huge fan (huge!!). You will have to tell me what you're wearing or wear something eye catching, so we can see you in the stands. They were showing that area alot in the game yesterday. You will probably be at a Marlins game, which will be awesome and there's nothing like the atmosphere at AT&T park!

message 1244: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I live in Stockton... Which is an hour outside if Sacramento in the Central Valley. I grew up in Fair Oaks and we hate Stockton, it's got such a bad wrap and people are shocked I live there which just pisses me off. Lol!

Yeah it's a marlins game and I've got tons of giants bedazzled gear from all my years of the boy playing baseball. We're always the Giants (hubbies requirement if they want him to coach lol).

Made it to our Yurt for the night. Off to explore with my boys!!

I love her PNR series. you'll have to let us know how you like it.

message 1248: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Searock, I live in the Bay Area too and you're so right about it being diverse. I love it! NorCal peeps are definitely different from the people from SoCal. I love visiting down there but don't know if I can ever live there.

message 1249: by Courtney (last edited Jun 06, 2013 10:21PM) (new)

Courtney | 159 comments Will do, Kay! I actually only have the second one of the series...so I'm wondering if I should hold off on it until I could get my hands on the first one.

Actually, I'm going to start Beautiful Mess (Bailey's Boys, #1) by Lucy V. Morgan , another free ebook!

message 1250: by D.G. (new)

D.G. What? I didn't know people hated Californians! I thought the hatred was all for New Yorkers! (Although I guess people are equally opportunity haters.)

I went to California for the first time last year and loved it. My husband has never been and we'll go together one of these days. :)
