3 years and 3 months later I'm up to 76/213. Some I've read with the club, some I'd previously read and the club added them.

2013 percentage: 33%
2016 percentage: 35%"

Currently (1-4-17) I'm at 83/225, or just under 37%.

If I manage the 12 for this year's challenge, I should improve on that.

I'm not a completionist, and there's no chance I'll read sequels that don't interest me or authors whose work I don't like who have multiple books on the shelf (China Mieville and Jim Butcher, for example), so I'll never hit 100%, but there is a lot of room between that number and where I am. I'd be cool hitting 50% eventually.

message 502: by Niels (new)

Niels (nielsm) | 4 comments Just joined and I've read 79.

Was wondering what to use as a challenge... maybe 21 would be a good number. :)

J L's Bibliomania (jlsbibliomania) | 49 comments I was curious how many of the books from the shelf I'd read over the years. I'm at 59/225 or 26%.

I don't like too many challenges, but a handful of the books that are already on my radar are also on your shelf.

message 505: by Michael (new)

Michael | 1303 comments I just reviewed the bookshelf again, and it looks like I made it to 70 books in 2016. (It helped that 4 books were added that I'd already read!) Counting Embassytown yesterday, and it's now 71.

message 506: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments 30-40 read so far. I made a list of 24 that I either had planned to read or had the book for. If I can get even one done a month, yay! I'd join the challenge, but I've read or am not interested in all but ONE book, so that wasn't going to work. So, after this month, I'll just put requests into my library for those I don't already have and read as they arrive.

message 507: by Simon (new)

Simon | 7 comments Just joined and worked out i've read 70 / 227 or 31%.

There's one or two I know I own, so may have read them, but I have boxes of books i just bought and collected that I've never touched yet (waiting for a rainy day or retirement). I've deffered on those im not sure of.
A number of these are on my tbr list and to be read this year.

message 508: by Claire (new)

Claire | 48 comments I've read 90/227 which I'm fairly impressed by actually! I'm taking part in the TBR challenge so should kick that over 100 this year - it's good to have such an excellent back catalogue to choose from. I can honestly never, ever, say I have nothing to read.

message 509: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments I finally hit 200 with Sabriel. I have a few more I want to get to but the good ones are few and far between now so I will probably just concentrate on the monthly selections.

message 510: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Nice job, Hank.

message 511: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (vinjii) I have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to genre literature :) 58 so far!

Donald | 240 comments 60, having just joined the group. The years "misspent" reading SF&F in my childhood pays off!

Papaphilly Who says they were misspent?

message 516: by Donald (new)

Donald | 240 comments Papaphilly wrote: "Who says they were misspent?"

Parents and teachers. :/

Lost Planet Airman | 766 comments 70/231, plus or minus a couple that I think I read, but refuse to mark off until I confirm it with a re-read. Misspent youth, and all that...

message 518: by C Patrick (new)

C Patrick Daily (verminous) I just joined tonight but I've read 56 of the listed books, though I have another dozen or so either on my Kindle or in hard copy I haven't gotten around to from the list, also.

Did you turn out to be productive?

message 520: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) Lol, only eleven; with five of my "to read" books on the shelf that makes a total of sixteen. My tastes are pretty eclectic, I guess; I read a lot of different genres but there are only a limited number of books within each genre that interest me.

message 521: by Andreas (new)

Andreas | 164 comments Last time, I've posted in here was Nov 2013 - I had 46/147 back then, that was 31%.
Now, I'm at 120/233, which is 51%.
At the same time, I now have 113 books to catch up for completion whereas in 2013 it was 101 books. I'm not targeting 100% but this is disturbing. I think, I lost tracture because I didn't read much last year.

message 522: by Ilona (last edited Apr 25, 2017 06:29AM) (new)

Ilona (Ilona-s) | 77 comments I have now 101/233 and 4 DNF compared to the 76/191 of August 2015 but 12 of these added books were actually read before they were selected by the group.

I will probably read one of the DNF but not the others and there are books I don't plan to read.

message 523: by Michael (new)

Michael Poeltl (mikepoeltl) Only nine for me, but they're all series so I have that going for me... Reading the Old Man's War series now and it's really fantastic. Hyperion series I've read probably three times now. Love it! Thanks for adding me!

message 524: by Vanessa (last edited May 22, 2017 09:59AM) (new)

Vanessa (vanessamac) | 27 comments 74/235 so far, with one DNF. Wow, I'm delighted I've read so many this group has. Many are on my To Read list. Oh, the every lengthy To Read list.

message 525: by Jay (last edited May 22, 2017 01:14PM) (new)

Jay | 2 comments Only 13 so far, all before joining the group. I don't think I'll finish Dune anytime soon...I've become very lazy with it.

message 526: by Sakuko (new)

Sakuko | 12 comments 42, if I counted right. I'm surprised I've got so many, since I usually have a pretty non-mainstream taste, but it's a great list. Will have to steal some more from it. ;)

Careful, Kim. Once you set yourself up as the Best In The World, the hopefuls don't stop tracking you down until they supplant you! Historically, this has not been a pleasant supplanting.

Don't take this as a threat, though, I don't think I'll read enough club books over the rest of my life to topple any of the big fish in this group. ;-)

I'm working on it. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell may be my downfall.

Allison Hurd | 14234 comments Mod
I only have 81 books on the bookshelf in the entirety of my book selections, and have read about 35 of them, I think. Or will have read 35 after I finish one of the ones I'm reading now!

I was trying but then a wall of mediocre and below books stopped my progress like a wall of zombie fungus or like a carpet of slave ants or like a creepy sentient forest or like a cloud of moon fragments or like.....

message 540: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I think you're the only one who has a chance, Hank :)

48/237 = 20.25% total
13/120 = 10.83% of the sci-fi shelf
35/117 = 29.91% of the fantasy shelf

message 546: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments When I posted last October, I was at 52. Right now, I’m at 76. I didn’t start making any real effort to read books on the group shelf until 2015. My progress since then has been:
2015 – 29 (cumulative) out of 199 (14.57%)
2016 – 59 (cumulative) out of 223 (26.46%)
2017 (YTD) – 76 (cumulative) out of 237 (32.07%)

At my current rate, averaging about 6 more books per year than the 24 yearly additions, I figure I should be all caught up by the year 2044. :)

If I read nothing but group books I could probably catch up within 3-4 years, but I get side-tracked by the series books. I recently read His Majesty’s Dragon off the shelf, and am now on the 9th book. Discworld is a more extreme example -- the 3 books on our shelf led to me reading all 40+ books.

I don’t have any serious aspirations to read the entire shelf, but it’s a great resource for reading selections, with such a wide variety of books in my two favorite genres. It's particularly helpful for me since I didn't get into SF&F until adulthood; I have a lot to catch up on.
