I live in Vegas. If you're staying on the Strip, and don't already have one, get a player's card from Harrah's. (A Total Rewards Card. You can get one at any of their properties- including Caesar's, Paris, etc.) I think they give the best rewards of any player's card. We're not big gamblers or spenders, but we were getting comped rooms after our first stay. Because you can put everything on the card for points- food at most places, gift shop, the room, etc. (Not comped at Caesar's, obviously, but we got a room on the strip for free and $10-$15 weekend rate after our first stay.)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments Yeah. It was scary.... But all better now and that's what counts.

I am on the strip, Bella. But I am not a player. Not my cup of tea.

Lynda | 836 comments Esther, I'm so sorry to hear about your ordeal, but am glad you're better.

Found out that my niece's husband passed his swallow test, and will not have to have a feeding tube inserted! They may be moving him into inpatient rehab this weekend. My niece says everyday there are improvements, even though they're sometimes small.

Amy's power supply on her computer is toast after a power outage on Thursday. They were at my house until late.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Wow, Esther, glad to hear you are doing well and soaking up some sun.

We are in the same boat, literally, with Lynda. Water, water everywhere. Trees down on power lines and roads flooded all around.

Awesome that your nephew is doing better, Lynda.

Anne, my eyesight improved in my early 40s. I was nearsighted as well and I've been driving without glasses/contacts ever since. I do put them on occassionally at night if I'm in an unfamiliar area though. Sometimes my eyes do get tired as my vision is not perfect so popping on my glasses for a bit helps to rest my eyes. My prescription now is quite mild and it just helps to focus a bit. I was excited when it happened so I'm also feeling excited for you as well!! Congrats. :D

Sarah | 18550 comments We moved our boat at the weekend so the spot we have now will be where we are for Christmas. We're in Bath, so nice and close to the city for getting last minute things which I'm sure I'll be needing on Christmas Eve! But xmas is still a way off.

I don't mind the teal, but the fonts are too small. And oh geez, it is even worse in the comment box! I've only been on GR for about five minutes and I already feel the eye strain like I've been staring at a video game and not blinking for a long time.

message 2479: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Website. After I posted here I went to audiobook group and they are in an uproar over it. Go figure the audiobook froup to be full of people with bad vision. Lol

I don't know about Travis, but I'm on the website. I noticed the fonts had changed the second the homepage loaded. I didn't notice the color change right away though.

message 2481: by Travis (new)

message 2483: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I hate this new font with a passion. It hurts my eyes and makes my vision go blurry. I hope Goodreads listens to their readers for a change, but I won't hold my breath.

message 2484: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Ok. Now I've seen it in all its direness! I agree. Font is teeny tiny and the links to discussions i s not in a good colour. Not easy on the eye at all.

message 2485: by Lisa (last edited Dec 15, 2015 01:48PM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I thought it was my eyes playing tricks on me initially but then I realised they had changed the font and the colour scheme. Me no likey either! Well, the teal is ok but the font? No!

message 2486: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Why did they change it? It was perfectly fine the way it was. Now, it's hard to read!!

message 2487: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Agree that the main font is really hard to read. The words just blur together. The teal font is easier to read, but the color choice isn't the best.

message 2488: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments What us interesting is that about 3 weeks ago during Monday night football the Bills played the Jets . normally one team is white the other a solid color. For whatever reason the Bills came out in bright red and the Jets came out in bright green. To most of us it looked like a bunch of Christmas elves playing football. To those who were color blind they could not differentiate the different players. They cam't see green and red. Behold goodreads chooses green and red. Talk about discrimination toward the color blind members

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Tejas Janet wrote: "Why did they change it? It was perfectly fine the way it was. Now, it's hard to read!!"

That's a good question. Once again, Goodreads makes useless changes to the site instead of concentrating on known issues.

message 2490: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments The reason for the change is make it easier to read. (?????) It's not easier at all. I don't like it.
Did the app change too? I didn't have the chance to check it.

message 2491: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Hate this new font. My eyes are killing me! Yes, the app is worse - I deleted it from my phone, Sandra.

message 2492: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments The app has had updates but the font appears the same. I posted my thoughts on the link Travis told us about. So many people think the same as us - whether it will change or not is a different matter.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Tejas Janet wrote: "Why did they change it? It was perfectly fine the way it was. Now, it's hard to read!!"

Exactly! I can understand them making changes if they are necessary but I'm failing to understand why they have done this. There was nothing wrong with the old font. This is a step backwards IMO.

message 2494: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 16, 2015 02:59AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I have no problems with the font. I actually find it a lot clearer. Both the sans serif and the serif fonts. I'm incredibly long sighted as well, so I have trouble reading screens (eye strain, blurriness, etc) and it works well for me.

They said they were open source fonts, and I have no problem with that. I'm all for open source as I like things not being tied down in ownership to large companies. I am wary (although I don't know the details) if Amazon (Goodreads) isn't paying for the open source fonts. They can afford it, so should pay. And they may be, it's just unclear to me. But them mentioning they are open source will get the creators exposure and use which is good.

This sans serif one is a lot like Calibri and Corbel, the more I use it.

My only annoyance is more white screen so that strains your eyes more than fonts. But I use f.lux already to deal with white screens and sleeping, so as it gets later it will dim down for me.

message 2495: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 16, 2015 03:00AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments And I like teal over the baby poo brown colour.

message 2496: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I like the new font on the updates tab side of things. It is easier for me to read. When I come over to the discussions tab with all the groups stuff that is when it all over powers me and hurts my eyes.

message 2497: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I have reduced the width of my browser window, ( I have a 67cm/26 inch screen) and that's made it better with less white on the sides.

I've edited my yearly thread for the challenge and that looks heaps better. It's cleaner and looks more modern, less type and clunk. I'm still fan so far.

If you don't want to make your browser smaller, check out f.lux as well. I do love it. https://justgetflux.com/

This is really my issue, too. I don't mind them making changes and modernizing the look of their sight. It's just the discussions main font that I struggle with.

The extra white doesn't bother me, and I like the minimalist approach to webdesign.

I also posted a comment, for what it's worth.

message 2499: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I like the font on the main page, but here in the group posts it's all of a sudden quite big and a bit harder to read. Not so much the font itself, but more the general lay-out if that makes sense. I'm sure for me that's just a matter of getting used too though.

The teal requires much more effort to read than the way it was before though.

message 2500: by Peggy (last edited Dec 16, 2015 07:32AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments On a different note: I had my PhD defense yesterday! It was a fantastic day :) I was extremely nervous all day, worrying about failing and making a fool of myself in front of everyone, but the actual defense went pretty well and I even had fun defending my thesis. Then afterwards there was a reception which was really nice. My paranymphs (two people, usually colleagues, who have a ceremonious role, they stand behind you during the defense and give moral support and are in charge of the present from all the colleagues) gave me a box which is filled with about 70 postcards (based on postcrossing ;)), written by family, friends and colleagues with congratulations and well-wishes. It's heartwarming that so many people take time to come to the defense and even more people take the effort to write a card. There were even cards from my mom's work colleagues or the mom of a girl I used to play with as a kid, for example! And at the end of the day we had a delicious dinner.

Now I feel very relaxed, relieved and happy. I keep thinking 'YES!' and have a big smile on my face :D

Thanks for all the YLTO support too!!

I wanted to post some pictures but I haven't gotten them yet.
